Im fed up with my Callaway 04 big berthas need help with next purchase.

Alright guys so like the title suggests I bought 04 big berthas in 2006 when i was around 12-13 years old.  I loved them for the first few years but as I got older and stronger it seems ive just out grew them.  Plus the super wide souls are extremely annoying I cant stand them. As well as the biggest thing that made me upset was my inability to crank up or down my shot depending on what kind of yardage I needed or wanted a little umph when going out of the rough.  No matter how hard I swung they would go the same distance.

So after doing some research and playing around with my dads and friends clubs (x18 and x20tours) ive decided that maybe I should make a purchase to some higher class irons maybe these player irons or game improvement irons.

Some specs about me:

Im 6'2 and 18 years old

handicap of around 15-20 (not really sure)

I use a stiff shaft (swing speed is around 100) on my driver

Ive been told when i was demoing drivers that I hit a very high trajectory

Im open to all sorts of ideas im looking between the 500-650 range so far ive been researching:

Adams idea black CB2

Callaway x24 hots

Nike Pro Cavity Victory Reds

Titleist AP1's

Please if you guys could give me input on these clubs or any others i should consider that would be great thanks

Sounds like you got the itch for new clubs.  It happens.  This probably won't be the last time.

I think you would be well-served by the x24's. They are a game improvement club  -  which offer you flexibility in your shot-making - and forgiveness for off-centered hits.

The Adams set is also very nice, but I don't think they would serve you as well. Truth is, you could get the most expensive set of irons, but your score would get worse. The AP1's aren't as forgiving as the x24's. I don't think that they would serve you well. Same thing for the Nikes.

At any rate, enjoy your search.

By the way, you might want to go somewhere and pay the $20 for a quick fitting - that gives particular attention to the shafts that you should look at. I know that you hit a stiff shaft, but there are varieties that tend to produce different ball flights. Mizzuno has a shaft analyzer that lots of places (like Golf Galaxy) use.

I am roughly around the same handicap as you. I had a set of the first nike pro combo forged irons and had the hardest times hitting them. I gave up with them and got the x-24's and what a difference. The ball flies off the face even with mishits. I am sticking with my x-24's for awhile until my ball striking really improves. Definitely try out the irons if at all possible.

Nike? Mehhh... Get the Titleist AP1s, they are the best irons on the market for your price range.

They are very solid feeling, and are forgiving as well. Go to your local golf shop and hit them. You will be amazed.

Nike got in the golf game too late. What since maybe 2002? Titleist have been around since the 1930s. You do the math.

Check out the new Callaway RAZR black. Literally being released any day, perhaps it was even March 16th. Carls Golf Land is where I would check online. These are some sweet looking irons and I almost got a set myself. Been hitting the X20 Tours for 3 years. Great irons, but the Miura demo club the fitter sent me spoiled me forever. Had to get a set of Miura 9003's the other week. But the Callaway RAZR black really caught my eye and is in your price range as well. Sweet looking irons and should possess some of the qualities you desire. I also played the Big Berthas. Had the golds for about 7 years. Never will be hitting them again. Great for their purpose, but something most all of us outgrow at some point. After an adjustment period, I actually hit the X20 Tours better than the Big Berthas.

Ya im not necessarily going for the super long ball nor am I gonna spend more money than necessary.  Ive been told about club fitting and im wondering how much does it cost at a big chain store?

You don't get real 'club fitting' at a big chain store.

Don't care what anyone tells you. Don't exist.

We wary of launch monitors, nets, big box stores, and 20 year olds with name tags.

You want a club fitting, find a certified professional club fitter.

Buy equipment where you can get a good deal, but get picky when it comes time for fitting.

BTW, Golfsmith has the X20 Tour for $399.

Can't go wrong with Ping if you are going the game improvement route.  I've owned the G2s, G10s, and G15s.  I haven't heard too much about the G20s, but I'm sure they are nice.  Of those the G2s were my favorite and G10s behind them.  I actually sold my G15s and went back to the G10s.

If you sign up for their email alerts, you can get some pretty good deals on http://www.callawaygolfpreowned.com.    I got my wife a set of RAZR X irons (6i-PW) there for less than $400.   I've bought several clubs through them and all have been in excellent shape, most not even looking like they have been used...

Ya I've checked out this site a couple times but never really been much of the online buyer always scared of the risks.  You say it's generally pretty reliable? like you've never encountered someone trying to rip you off real bad saying they were ok but actually beat to hell and back?

Why not play the G2's?

I still do. I'm a club ho sometimes and feel like I have to try the new technology. I think I just got more comfortable wih the G2s than anything else. My biggest problem lately is I won't stick with anything long enough to get comfortable an just end up going back to the G2s.

When you buy from Callaway pre-owned, you are dealing with a part of Callaway Golf, not individual buyers.   So, yes, they are reliable.   They grade their clubs as "average", "good", "very good" and "like new".   To be fair, I have not bought anything that was not at least in the "very good" category, so my experience is with the last two grades but those have been in excellent shape and several have not shown signs of ever having been used at all..   If you read their trade in policy, I don't think they will take a beat up club.   Certainly, they are not going to give you anything in trade for it.

Callaway Preowned is as reputable as it gets.

90% of my equipment in the last ten years came from this site.

Got most of my stuff during November when they have these "days of deals" specials. Basically, two weeks of special prices. Irons 60% of regular price, driver 1/2 off, hybrids, buy one get one half price, etc.. Just a great way to score clubs cheap. All mine have been in "like new" condition, which was brand new clubs in plastic wrap. Just at a fraction of what the retail stores sell this stuff. Seems I got my FT-9 Tour driver for $160, a $300-350 driver at the time (2 years back). I got my Big Bertha irons in "good" condition years ago, and they were nearly new looking. Two years ago, I got the X20 Tours for around $300 and they were brand new. Can't beat Callaway Pre-owned. They will adjust lie, loft, length, change grips, etc.. at the time of purchase as well. Fast shipping and top notch customer service.
