I have used Ping Eye 2s for about ten years now. Bought them used in 2002. I am now looking to buy a new set but the choice of irons out there is a bit overwhelming. I know ping eye 2s are a solid set so I really don't want to buy a set and then end up liking my eye 2s better. Getting enough distance isn't really a problem Neither is ball striking. I hit my pitching wedge comfortably 145. I don't work the ball that much unless it's necessary. Being a college kid I don't really want to spend $800 on a set if it really isn't necessary. I would love to only spend between $400-$600. I have looked around a little bit and so far the best priced iron to me was the TaylorMade Burner 2.0 at $369. All I hear about those though is about them giving you a lot of distance which is something I don't need. These are also considered a game improvement Iron which I've heard don't have as good of feel to them. Would a "better Player" iron be a better choice? What are your guys thoughts?

The first thing I would ask you is what you want to gain by getting new irons?

How you answer that question would determine what design of club you would look for.

More forgiveness - you would look at the "game improvement designs" or "ultra game improvement designs".

More workability - you woul d do well to look at players irons.

With a 7 handicap the Burner 2.0 irons don't seem to make sense since they are all about decreasing the loft on their irons to boast greater distance.

You will give up some backspin with new irons with the new grooves.

You will want to give some special attention to the shafts as they affect ball flight more than you may think.  In any case, get fit - use a shaft analyzer - hit suggested clubs into the screen and get the numbers down and then make sure you hit them outside. It makes a huge difference.
