If they are the TM 300s I'd keep em.  If they are the 320s or 360s I'd consider a new set.  IMO iron technology hasn't gone crazy lately, especially when it comes to players irons.  I typically only switch irons when they are beat to hell.  I'm playing irons I bought back in 2005.  Before that I played Ping Eye 2's that I had since the early 90's.

Driver:  Callaway Diablo Octane 9.5*
3W:  Callaway GBB II 12.5*, 5W:  Callaway Diablo 18* Neutral
3H:  Callaway Razr X, 4H:  Callaway Razr X
5-PW:  Callaway X Tour
GW:  Callaway X Tour 54*, SW:  Callaway X Tour 58*
Putter:  Callaway ITrax, Scotty Cameron Studio Design 2, Ping Anser 4

i've asked a similar question myself, irons haven't moved on so much, drivers most definately have!

i got a 2nd hand ping karsten driver and added 20+ yards to my driving.

i'm sticking with my slightly older irons (wilson fat shaft) because the only reason for me too change would be cosmetic.

 karsten 10deg driver

 fat shaft irons

 tour ii putter

probably more important than new iron technology would be getting a proper fit for your game

Driver: Machspeed Black 9.5

3 wood:  Insight

Hybrid:   A4  19 degree

Irons:   CG red 4-PW

Wedges:   CG12  56 degree and CG10 60 degree

Putter:  White Hot XG Sabertooth

I would say the shafts have had some advancements since the 90's but the players iron hasn't.  But as of drivers I would for sure take a look at a new one.  Just yesterday I tested my Taylormade 510 TP against a new driver and I added more launch and more ball speed which equals more distance.  Hope this helps.

In my bag:
MP 57's 4-PW KBS Stiff
Ping G 20 10.5* Stiff
Taylormade V Steel 3 and 5 wood

Bridgestone J33 R Hybrid 21* NV Shaft
Mizuno MP Quad Cut 52* and 56* Spinner Shafts

Also if I recall correctly, TM was putting quality rifle shafts into every set of the 300 irons.

Thanks to all - advice much appreciated. Coupled with this, other internet research and a lesson / equipment chat with a trusted pro I have come to the following conclusions:

Irons. I would be able to 'perhaps' get slightly more distance with a new set, but this would be primarily because clubs have been delofted over the years (more cavity than blade but apparently true). There might also be some advances in consistency - but marginal. Ensuring they are the correct fit and correct shafts (yes - rifle 6) is more important than new club heads.

Driver. As said here, the pro reckons there is 20 yards waiting for me in a local golf shop

Also, it would seen swing emphasis has changed (probably not the right place for this but perhaps of interest). I was taught to drop it inside from the top and use fast hands to get my draw. Apparently I need to come down the same plane which will help me with consistancy & trapping it (thus the lower ball flight I wanted).

Oh and I've been using the wrong ball as well ! (pro V1x needed).

Went to range after lesson and it must have been a good lesson as I am hitting it like a pig.

Summary: Priortities: New Driver, new 3 wood, new balls, then new (ish) irons (probably the TM MB)

Thanks to all

I think "block and rock" is still a perfectly fine golf move.

Maybe so, and the easy thing would be to stay with it, but I don't have the time to perfect the timing (so to speak) and what he was saying makes sense to me. Down the line it is! Straighter, lower shots - just some way off yet!
