Lately, I've been playing at the Lakewood CC in Lakewood, CA.  It's not the most gorgeous course or best maintained, but the way they have the course set-up, it makes you hit fairly precise shots coming into the green.  The fairways are very generous for the big dog..let him eat! and the greens are slow to moderate in speed, BUT most of the greens are surrounded by bunkers..so you either better be sure you got it or lay up..there is no bail out..which is it is so frustrating but so enjoyable..a truly love-hate relationship.

I really like the concept at Westridge golf course in McKinney Texas. http://www.westridgegolfcourse.com/layout9.asp?id=158&page;=2503 6 par 5s 6 par 4s 6 par 3s make for an enjoyable round. More golf courses should be designed this way, instead of boring you with lots of similar par 4s. Big fan of recently renovated golf courses/courses that have been closed for six months or more for improvements and then re-open. They are in such good shape. Two public courses in my area have recently reopened and they are a real joy to play right now. Pecan Hollow and Steven's Park. I also like the bargain hidden gem course that is too far or difficult to drive to except for the real enthusiasts. During the late 90s and mid '00s boom, lots of nice golf courses were built 50+ miles north of the metroplex in anticipation of continued north suburban development. Stonecreek http://www.stonecreekcc.com/ and The Bridges http://bridgestexasgolf.com/are two such courses far north of the metroplex I enjoy playing.

I've been playing at Windy Hill in Richmond a lot lately and I really like it. It's convenient to get to, not crowded on a late Friday afternoon, inexpensive, not very difficult, offers more to think about off the tee than just 1w and low iron on par 3s, and they're kid friendly (I take one of my young sons and they ride along while I play). It's been great to play and continue to learn on.

Old South Golf Links, Bluffton, SC. I like it because it is always in good shape and all but four holes are in a completely natural setting. Also reasonably priced for locals and has quite a few challenging holes that require more accuracy than initially expected.

Always changing:

Driver: Cobra S2/Nike VR Pro 10.5º

Irons: Callaway X-20 Tour 4-9i

Hybrid: Titleist 910H 19º & 21º

Wood: TaylorMade R11 3w

Putter: Odyssey White Hot

Wedges: Titleist Vokeys - 48º, 54º, 62º

First round: February 2011
