Got an ugly one for you fellas.

I've been "playing golf" for almost 20 years as a 6-10-round-a-year-hack. I have gotten sick of sucking and have only really started to try and improve for the last few years with limited success.

Currently, I'll score anything from 95 to 108. My typical ball flight is short, high and right although lately I'll spinkle in an embarrassing hook just to complete the misery.

I've been working on eliminating fat/thin shots and focusing on getting more distance and consistancy. Hitting down and wrist supination at impact are my primary focuses and I thought i was getting somewhere until I saw the video. There is so much wrong with my swing that I figured I'd better get in front of a specialist ASAP before it was too late.

My apologies for having to watch and thanks in advance for any help.

First things first. The video is private so we can not watch it. Second I can tell you hit it high from how far back in your stance the ball flight is and because its further back, you're probably not getting your full turn in before hitting the ball and am coming in with your club face open. A good indicator is watching your divots, will tell you exactly how open/close you are coming into the ball.

Ooops. Video is public now. Sorry 'bout that.

And my apologies about the video. It wasn't filmed straight on but slightly to my right. It makes it look like the ball is far back in my stance. I usually set up with the ball pretty much middle of my my stance for everything but drives.

Thanks again for looking, guys. I really appreciate it.

Great!

I will absolutely work on that. Is that video available yet. I've started with the big thread on that but haven't gotten to the end yet.

Any other glaring issues? I mean, I know there are but any tips?

Thanks so much for looking.

You're "casting" on the start of the downswing. As if you were throwing out a fishing line behind you. Keep your hands quiet.

Head still, and slightly behind the ball. Then when you take the club back feel as though you are just turning your chest back. Once at the top start downswing with shoulders and not hands. Feel as though you are swinging your chest out and away from your body. Get the ball up at leat to middle os stance. Closer to left heel for driver.

Awesome. I'm off to the range tonight. Any other things I should be working on?

Make your right shoulder turn your head toward your target on the follow thru

Flare the left foot a bit more, tilt the left shoulder down toward the ball more on the backswing, keep the head centered at all times, and slide the hips forward more instead of spinning them from the top.  Hard to tell, but maybe move the ball a hair back in your stance too.  Make sure your swing bottoms out on the target side of the ball.  That should give you plenty to work on.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
