I've been Playing Golf for: 3 months

My current handicap index or average score is: No registered handicap

My typical ball flight is: average

Videos:

So I started playing golf again since about 3 months ago (after an 8 year hiatus) and I purchased this camera which happens to have a high speed mode. After taking my camera with me to the range and making some recordings I looked at my swing and I noticed my downswing is way too steep. Any pointers how to fix this? Anybody else who sees something awkward please feel free to comment.Sorry the quality isn't too great, but that's the price I have to pay for recording slow motion. Thank you!

Your swing doesn't seem bad at all but here is somethings i would work on in your case. The shoulders are on a too flat angle at the top of the backswing as you can see with the red lines. You can increase this by side tilting and maybe also straighten the left leg in that position. The red star shows the difference between the space between your elbow and body and his. You can try to put one peg in each of your armpit while swinging and make them stay until impact as a drill to fix that. Also your hips should be leaned forward at impact to make contact with ball before hitting the ground. Also try to swing in front of a mirror to aim the clubshaft more at the ball at the top instead of behind your back. Here's a thread with correct positions of the whole swing to compare your with: http://thesandtrap.com/t/53724/the-ps-positions-or-as-alignments-in-the-golf-swing

Good luck!

  • 1 month later...

You seem a little too upright at address and would get more distance if you transferred your weight towards your target. Swing looks "armsy". I believe you were commenting about getting more distance in another thread. The lack of weight transfer is probably why you are not getting good distance.

"My ball is on top of a rock in the hazard, do I get some sort of relief?"

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I can indeed see the armsy swing in the video. Since I posted the video I spent a lot of time fixing this and it's much better now. The biggest distance improvement came out of improving my swing plane and tempo. Thanks for all the feedback!

All upper body and arms no proper hip rotation

You start downswing with hips, they little feel like they're 'firing' down the line

Do that

Then freeze video you at impact

All you want to see is two things

Right heel starting to lift a little at impact

Belt buckle already facing the target

That means you rotated the hips like a pro

You learn proper hip rotation which is the first thing a pro should teach you, but almost no pros know how to teach it

To get an idea of how the hips have 'fired' by impact

Get an impact of rory or a young Tiger

where is their belt buckle?

facing the target already AT IMPACT

freeze frame yours

where is your belt buckle

this is the #1 mistake of all 10+ handicaps IMO

once you learn to rotate the hips properly

the rest just falls into place

this is the most difficult part of the swing, it's why almost no pros address it, teach it or even really understand it

yet you look at the 'greats', where is the belt buckle AT IMPACT

facing the target already

you can't swing with arms and get to that position

so that's the whole thing

learn proper hip rotation

there's some good videos on youtube about it

guys no one has heard of

the close big name pro I saw to get close to explaining it was watson

but he confused it up with 'spine angle'

rotation is more important than spine angle, so you get that right, the spine angle is right

you can have a great spine angle like watson and not properly rotated your hips

his hips were already rotating like a great pro

so that's why he can't explain it as simple as this

but his behind the back club swing drill is good to feel proper rotation, only his spine angle over emphasis isn't enough for most amateurs

it's all in the hips

you get that proper hip rotation the spine angle kinda takes care of itself

great spine angle without proper hip rotation = bad swing

proper hip rotation = good swing, and the spine angle can change depending on players stature, so there is no 'real proper' spine angle as some teach

but there's only one proper hip rotation

at impact

if you rotated properly your belt buckle is facing target

easy for young players to master

the more you age the harder it is to do and learn

so rory at impact a young Tiger at impact

2 of the great recent 'swings'

the common denominator isn't spine angle, it's belt buckle IMO

all facing target

that means

proper hip rotation

which means

inside hit with late hinged wrists and lots of lag that snaps into place at the bottom of the swing arc

you master that move

how good do you want to get

scratch

plus

plus 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8

I think someone rated Tiger in 2001 at close to plus 10, or more

highest plus ever recorded

    • A 5400 yd course is not that short for gents driving it 160 yards considering the approach shot lengths they are going to be faced with on Par 4s.  Also, for the course you are referring to I estimate the Par 4s have to average longer than 260 yds, because the Par 5s are 800 yds or so, and if there are four Par 3s averaging 130 the total is 1320 yds.  This leaves 4080 yds remaining for 12 Par 4s.  That is an average of 340 per hole. Anyway, if there are super seniors driving it only 160ish and breaking 80 consistently, they must be elite/exceptional in other aspects of their games.  I play a lot of golf with 65-75 yr old seniors on a 5400 yd course.  They all drive it 180-200 or so, but many are slicers and poor iron players.  None can break 80. I am 66 and drive it 200 yds.  My average score is 76.  On that course my average approach shot on Par 4s is 125 yds.  The ten Par 4s average 313 yds.  By that comparison the 160 yd driver of the ball would have 165 left when attempting GIR on those holes.
    • I don't think you can snag lpga.golf without the actual LPGA having a reasonable claim to it. You can find a ton of articles of things like this, but basically: 5 Domain Name Battles of the Early Web At the dawn of the world wide web, early adopters were scooping up domain names like crazy. Which led to quite a few battles over everything from MTV.com You could buy it, though, and hope the LPGA will give you a thousand bucks for it, or tickets to an event, or something like that. It'd certainly be cheaper than suing you to get it back, even though they'd likely win. As for whether women and golfers can learn that ".golf" is a valid domain, I think that's up to you knowing your audience. My daughter has natalie.golf and I have erik.golf.
    • That's a great spring/summer of trips! I'll be in Pinehurst in March, playing Pinehurst No. 2, No. 10, Tobacco Road, and The Cradle.
    • April 2025 - Pinehurst, playing Mid Pines and Southern Pines + 3 other courses. Probably Talamore, Mid-South, and one other.  July 2025 - Bandon Dunes, just me and my dad.
