I'm going to add a few that were not mentioned.

In the Traverse City area:

Hawk's Eye and The Chief are very good courses that take you through the woods and away from it all.

The Sundance course at A-Ga-Ming is something to behold. You can't go wrong here. They should issue you a rake when you tee off. 120 sand traps.

Kalamazoo Area:

Angels Crossing in Vicksburg, Yarrow in Augusta, and Lake Doster north of Kalamazoo.

SW by Lake Michigan:

Ravines in Saugatuck, Hawkshead is South Haven and Whittacker Woods in New Buffalo.

I've played most of these. The others I've been to and photographed.

I too will add a few...

Shanty Creek... great resort and depending where you stay it can be one of the most affordable resorts. They have 4 courses... two great, one good, and one OK. Chief and Hawk's Eye are literally right next door.
1) Cedar River (Tom Weiskopf).... is one of the best courses in Michigan... I have played Shepard's Hollow (as mentioned earlier) and I think Cedar River is comparable.
2) Legend at Summit Village... this is a Palmer course... it is very nice, fantastic conditions... can't see any other holes while on one... dramatic scenery... classic northern MI golf.
3) Schuss is an older course that is scenic and nice... but it is not of the same caliber as the other two... It is great for a second round on a day when you play one of the others...
4) Summit Course... typical older resort course... good conditions (not perfect)... not a bad course, but in comparison to the others it isn't as good...

Crystal Mountain (2 courses)
one is unbelievable one is decent
Mountain Ridge Course... spends much of the round cut through Michigan mature forest, then climbs up the ski hill for a dramatic finish. Absolutely fantastic conditions, scenery, and golf...

Champion Hill... this is near crystal... it is a great course... links layout that is layed out in one of the highest areas and you can see Crystal Lake and Lake Michigan from points on the course... links style layout... a truly fun round.

St. Ives and Tullymore... unbeatable... every bit as good as Shepard's Hollow.

Elk Ridge... over in Atlanta MI... may see elk or deer on course... lots of pines and doglegs... immaculate conditioning... on many best public lists.

also... two good sources for MI golf...

There is a short article in Golf Digest this month where they play 5 courses in Northern Michigan. They hit Tullymoore, Arcadia Bluffs, Bay Harbor, Threetops (the Par 3 course) at Treetops and one other. I'm drawing a blank on the name.

One thing is for sure, there is no shortage of great golf in Michigan. Unfortunately this year, there is no shortage of snow either. I am usually playing by the end of March, but it's not looking good right now. It seems like everyother day we get more.

Big_M, my dad and I stayed at Shanty Creek last fall and played. It was so much fun (and such a bargin) we are doing it again this fall. We are looking to play The Legend, Cedar River, The Torch and High Pointe, which is a little south. You can't beat a package that is under $260 (per person) for 2 nights stay and 4 courses.

We played The Chief twice the one full day we were there because the replay rate was $20 TO RIDE!

Also looking to visit Pohlcat and Buck's Run in Mt. Pleasant for a stay-and-play.

Jeepthrills, I feel your pain. I have not been on a course since the begining of November. Last year I played into the first week of January. Snow sucks.

definately a bargain... I went with my wife for the spring deal... if you go to the golf show in Novi or Lansing you can get a special rate at a lot of the courses. I guess they are remodling the Summit Lodge... so the price may go up soon? I have stayed at Summit twice, once in the main lodge, and once in a private unit a little down the hill. I would love to stay over at Cedar River area, but can't justify the cost. When you went in the fall the colors must have been stunning if they had begun to change. The colors we get in Northern MI are pretty unbelieveable... it would almost make it hard to concentrate on golf.

Pohlcat is better than average, but not great. I've heard Buck's Run is the best in Mt Pleasant, and some would say Mid-Michigan. I want to try the Gull Lake and Yarrow courses... they might be a good stop for you on the way up from Indiana. http://www.gulllakeview.com/

I actually grew up in Galesburg, MI, which is only about 6 miles from Gull Lake. I played Yarrow on my birthday last year and had a great time. It's a top notch course. My dad is my golf buddy and he's been itching to play in Mt. Pleasant. My parents like the casino up there, but mom won't let dad hit the course while they are up there. While we were up in Traverse City, the leaves just started turning. It's kind of a crap shoot making the trip later in September or early October with the weather. It only rained one evening we were there.

another great choice just outside of lansing are the hawk hollow courses. eagle eye is amazing. the 17th is a replica of the 17th at sawgrass.

in the grand rapids area try thousand oaks and thornapple pointe. about a half hour north of town is pilgrim's run. all three are truly great courses

Matt P. - Newbie here. That's a great set of links you offered. Thanks for those! I live in Michigan and am always looking for lots of online information re: new courses to play. Do you have a list of web links for courses in the Detroit area? I'm looking for one with a map and links similiar to the one at www.ozarkslakegolf.com (for the Lakes of the Ozarks area) Also, is there such a comprehensive list on this site? Maybe I just haven't found it yet...
I found some sites online, but they don't link to the actual golf course website, they link to auxiliary sponsor websites.

not a problem... it is a great site although the reviews are generally a little generous.... they won't bash any course... but you can read between the lines. I love the pics and just having the links.

Michiganders. Western Michigan Golf Show this weekend at DeVoss Hall in Grand Rapids. You want info, that's the place to get it. I've gone the last 2 years. We usually make a run to Galaxy Golf up off 28th street too. Just an idea for the weekend.

Two guys is a great site. For the local Detroit Area, I also use Last Minute Golfer a lot. You have to register, but they give you a break on green fees, and have a lot of good courses in the metro area. Hope this helps.

Just got back from a golfing trip in the Gaylord area, and played Black Lake in Onaway. It is an absolute must play. Rees Jones did an incredible job.

We loved our trip to Boyne so much in 07 that we're going back in 09. Will at least look at the other resorts too but the deal at Boyne is so good it's hard to imagine going elsewhere. Will post again as we start planning the trip. Probably 8 guys this time!

In case you have not heard, they will be filming the next Big Break at Boyne Highlands. It will be pretty cool seeing them playing the same courses that I have been on.

I can attest to the quality of most of the courses mentioned, and this thread is getting me excited for my Labor Day MI trip, which will include rounds at Arcadia, Forest Dunes and Kingsley.

Once course not mentioned that I have enjoyed is High Pointe, near Traverse City. It's Tom Doak's first solo design. It ain't Pacific Dunes, but it's still a good track.

(HackinSB -- if you spend a weekend around Mt Pleasant, you could play Pohlcat/Buck's Run one day, and then Tullymore/St Ives the next. It's a reasonable drive (30-45 min's) from the first pair to the second.)

    • Day 133 (25 Apr 24) - Worked with the Divot Board today added a piece of cardboad behind the ball to help reinforce ball first contact. Contact improved through the round.   Added grandson's football goal posts about 10yds out to add a good start line visual Good session today.
    • Day 120: 4/25/24 Full Speed Spectrum training session. Low energy today and my speed was lower than normal. Will see what I can do on Saturday.
    • Day 541, April 25, 2024 Ten minutes after lessons. Still not caught up, but should be by tomorrow evening.
    • Playing irons only may lead to some short-term gains, but you'll want to at least practice with the driver if you ultimately have some decently good goals.
    • He plays from 68.3 / 124.  A combo tee setup of normal mens and seniors.   I play from 69.7/127.   He left after taking a triple on 14 and then leaving.  Which plays to what I think his plan is,   He doesn’t stroke on 14 but would have to take bogey for non completed holes on the way in.   Maybe that’s giving him too much credit, but he found a way to add 4 shots to his score over three holes so….     I looked up his last 20 rounds in GHIN and he has a lot of rounds at easier courses (rating and slope) that are higher than his normal rounds at home.   Since I mostly have his front nine score during the match (36) to go on, he has three nine hole scores at our course posted that are 41-43. I wrote the whole thing up to the head of our golf association who runs all the tournaments.  Our pro is not involved officially in the tournaments because the golf associations are separate from the club.   He’s pretty well known for this, however I was pretty shocked at how well he played carrying a 15.   I think eventually they will do something, a lot of people have complained.  The golf association threw someone out a couple of years ago and it was a three month situation where the guy retaliated.  They probably are hesitant to go thru anything like that again.  That is a rather crazy story I might post about later.
