I ran the numbers for the World #1 ranking implications of 2012's final major, and for anyone interested, here they are. I rounded most of them to hundredths, except in cases where more digits are helpful for comparison to another player. Current OWGR averages: 1 Luke Donald 9.67 2 Tiger Woods 8.53 3 Rory McIlroy 8.46 4 Lee Westwood 7.48 Luke Donald's OWGR average after: - a win is 11.43 - solo 2nd is 10.66 - 2WT2 (2 way tie for second) is 10.47 - 3WT2 is 10.34 - 4WT4 is 9.952651 (not a typo; I'm showing this because it's very close to Tiger's Solo 2nd) - Solo 14th is 9.702651 - Making cut on number is 9.539189 - Missing Cut is 9.51 Tiger's OWGR average after: - a win is 10.95 --- will become #1 no matter what anybody else does - solo 2nd is 9.948707 --- will become #1 if Rory doesn't win, and Luke finishes worse than 4WT4 Note that for WGR points (and prize money), solo 5th is actually better than 4WT4. - 2WT2 is 9.698707 -- will become #1 if Luke finishes worse than solo 14th, and Rory doesn't win - 3WT2 is 9.53204 --- will become #1 if Luke misses the cut, and Rory doesn't win - 4WT2 is 9.41 - solo 3rd is 9.45 --- cannot possibly become #1 with either of these last two placings Rory's OWGR average after: - a win is 10.354219 --- will become #1 if Luke finishes no better than 3WT2 - solo 2nd is 9.537893 --- will become #2 unless Tiger wins and Luke makes the cut; will become #1 if Luke MCs and Tiger doesn't win - 2WT2 is 9.333811 -- cannot become #1 Westwood's OWGR average after: - a win is 9.481503 -- cannot become #1

Nice breakdown.  I am sure you noticed that if they used the actual number of events rather than the minimum 40 in the denominators Tiger would already be #1 at 9.74 compared to Luke's 9.67. I think this is the first week that has been the case.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
