I am an ex- division 1 baseball player and I aspire to play golf competitively. I have always gotten hand-down clubs from my dad but for my birthday I am getting fitted for new irons. I would love some suggestions for clubs. I am not looking to spend 1000$ but I. An afford to buy a set for more than 300. I have a decent set of cast irons already (callaway x14) but I am thinking about going forged. I am a mid handicapper and am really improving my game. Also, any driver suggestions? Thanks Ben

The benefit of forged ie soft steel is that they can be bent to fit you. Cast or brittle stainless = no good. Keep that in mind.

In addition since you say you want to play competitive golf like almost all choices in clubs have been eliminated prior to 2010,

AGAIN PRIOR TO 2010 CLUBS ARE OUT OF THE RUNNING

Check the club to see if it conforms here http://www.usga.org/InfoClubsDB/intro.html

Assuming you have a fairly stable swing, you should get a dynamic club-fitting in which the fitter looks at all aspects of your swing. With this info you could find out what shaft + clubhead combo works best for you for woods, hybrids, irons, wedges, putter.

Then, you can start assembling the set you need. If you find the right golf shop, the reps can set you up with some decent used irons which will fit your swing needs.

If you want to play competitively, building a set using recommendations from strangers will delay your progress in the game.

Next: Any chance you could work for a country club or a golf resort in a golf operations job? You would want to make a deal with the head pro to get some help on your game along the way.

Another tidbit: Look up veteran golf teacher Jimmy Ballard of  "The Connection" fame. Ballard's mentor was a former Yankee baseball player who "titled his bat swing to the ground" and made a living for several years on the pro golf tour. Ballard got help from pro tennis and baseball players in his study of handloading for swings in different sports.

Keep us posted, and see if Tommy Gainey will sponsor you!
