Hello everyone, I am from Canada and I have recently found a big interest in golf. I am brand new to golf and have no idea what anything means.

A few of my questions are:

What is a handicap?

What does Slice or Hook mean?

What would be a good drill to start with?

Thank you so much this place seems like a wonderful place to learn golf, I hope to learn this sport to be able to play with friends.

First off, welcome to the site.

Quote:

What is a handicap?

Basically it's a measure of your abilities as a golfer. The thing is that there are golfers of differing abilities and courses of differing difficulty and the handicap system tries to level the playing field so to speak. Here is the Wikipedia article which goes a bit more in depth.

What does Slice or Hook mean?

For a right handed golfer a slice is a shot that curves to the right, and a hook is a shot that curves to the left. Sometimes you'll hear "fade" or "cut" instead of slice, and "draw" instead of hook. That kind of has to do with how much a ball curves (i.e. if it's a little to the right it's a fade, a lot to the right is a slice).

This is a great article that really explains ball flights and why the ball curves as it does.

If you are serious about the game, the absolute best thing you can do is go get some lessons. It's much easier to learn good practices and habits now rather than trying to unlearn bad ones later.

Check out this article as well.
