Being an Okie it goes without saying that I am psyched to have the Championship returning to Oklahoma and Southern Hills. I wanted to 'volunteer' from the e-mails that I was getting from www.golfnow.com but the benefit of 'volunteering' was going to cost me $180. I wanted to do it but I didn't want to pay $180 and be the guy that gets to drive Sprites and Cokes from the catering truck to the umbrella tent in the parking lot

My question is this, would you pay to be a 'volunteer' for a PGA event? With no guarantee to meet any of the pros and wind up working whatever job is put on you and miss the tournament?

You do get your clothing "at cost" or thereabouts for your $180, so you can think of it as cheap souvenirs with a chance to get pretty close to the golfers, too, if you want.

If you absolutely must be near the golfers, go as a fan. But even that'll cost you more, and as a volunteer you get to attend the tournament the days you aren't working...

Plus some of the jobs volunteers have are pretty cool. Last year at the 84 Lumber Classic I stopped to talk to two volunteers who were measuring the length of drives on one of the long drive holes; to me that would be a really good job.
