Honda LPGA Thailand Preview

Congratulations goes out to Jiyai Shin for winning the first tournament of the 2013 season. Jiyai held off a charging Yani Tseng to capture the ISPS Women's Australian Open. The Constructivist's full recap can be found here.

The tour moves to Thailand this week for the playing of the Honda LPGA Thailand.

This will be tournament #2 of 28 this year.

Don't be fooled by the fact that this is a limited field event. This will be one of the strongest fields you will see all year for a non-major event, 18 of the top 20 ladies on this week's Rolex Rankings will be teeing it up. Even more impressive than that, 56 of the top 60 ladies on the LPGA Priority List will be in attendance. My strength of field rating is 80%. Way up from last week's 49.5%.

Here are the key details:

Not sure I have ever seen anything like that. Jutanugarn needed a 7 on the last hole, and made an 8.

All she needed to do is lay up. Why go for the green in 2, with a two stroke lead on the final hole? Just hit the green in 3, even if you 3 putt you still win. How upsetting.

Her caddy should be fired.

Final results:

1 Inbee Park -12 F
2 Ariya Jutanugarn -11 F
3 Yani Tseng -10 F
3 So Yeon Ryu -10 F
3 Stacy Lewis -10 F
3 Beatriz Recari -10 F

And more recently Kyle Stanley at last year's tourney at Torrey Pines.

Or some scrub named Jack. He always finds a way to blow up on the par 5's.

Yea, now that you mention it....I think he blew the Open in 1999 with a 3 shot lead going to 18.

    • Day 161 1-21 Backswing focus, used mirror to check position. After a few reps hit foam ball.
    • Day 19: 2026.01.21 Only managed ten minutes of slow swings indoors tonight. Same progress pieces.
    • For someone with a very consistent swing speed and ball strike, upgrades may improve performance. For everyday golfers, probably not. I'm a rather odd player. I usually get best performance from basic pro or tour heads, but with lighter stock shaft from the model's standard driver set up. (Yes, current EXS is an exception.) When I get a full driver fitting, I usually try a couple of modest upgrade  (not super magic) shafts. Most of the time upgrade gives a couple of extra yards, or 10 yards less. Remember this about stock shafts: They are matched to a particular driver model to fit the type of player likely to adopt that model. Also, most OEMs offer a variety of stock shafts in their drivers. Test for which one works best. And, the final decider...
    • Uh, seeing you're having trouble with hit-and-miss performance from inherited clubs... Get Fitted! IF the 910H pair don't work, swap them out. Also, only two degrees separation in loft is not much. You might consider a 4W (much more reliable than a 3W) plus hybrid. This would give more distance separation than two Hs. For hybrid, get one you can hit... Maybe a more benevolent 4H. Quite often I try to brand match my bridge clubs (FWs and Hs), and my irons and wedges... but not always. Whatever works!
