If you never had a caddy, then you need not read this.
I am a caddy at a local country club. I have worked there for 3 years and have been requested a number of times. I feel, and so do others, that I am a good caddy. Well, today and yesterday, I caddied for the same two guys in a foursome. Through both of the rounds, I lost one ball, because it was in the fescue. 4 guys X 90 shots each (about) = 360 shots. 1/360 balls lost, not bad. 3 guys have the nerve to tell me how to do my job (on separate holes.) One says, you should really mark the ball with a towel when it's in trouble. (They thought the ball was in the woods, but it was a foot off of the cart path, sitting up nicely. They should have seen it as the drove by it, but I probably should have marked it.) Another said, I should have ran over to his ball to look for it. Had I done so, I would not have been in good position to see the other 3 drives, and I knew this. The final comment was, "When any ball gets into trouble, you should run over and drop your towel on it. If it's in the fairway, none needed. It just makes it faster for the golfer, so we don't have to look for it. " I was standing right next to the ball, so if I threw my towel down near the ball, I would have picked it right back up again. The golfers drove to me, and hence the ball. There would be no difference if I threw my towel down. I have talked to better caddies about throwing a towel down, and most say, they don't need to. The reason is that caddies remeber where the balls go, it's our job.
So next time you have a caddie, never tell him how to do his job. First off, it is very insulting having another person tell you how to do your job, especially when you are better at the job then they are. Secondly, most caddies know what they are doing. They do not need tips you have from 20 years ago. Chances are, they are better at caddying than you are at golfing. Lastly, how would you like a caddy to tell you how to golf. Maybe the caddy says "You probably shouldn't hit garbage shots anymore." Just think about this.

Feel better, man? I've never had a caddie, but if I ever do, I won't tell him how to do his job.

    • I can't say that I remember a lot of individual putts, but I do have one specific memory.  The first time I played the Old Course, I had hit a pretty good drive on the 6th hole.  I had about 60 yards left, and due to the swale in front of the green, there was no chance of flying a wedge on or near the green and having it stop on the green.  My caddie recommended either a running 7-iron chip or a putt, and I took the putter and a pretty hard swing.  The ball rolled over humps and through hollows, disappeared into the swale in front of the green, and re-appeared heading right at the hole.  I ended up maybe 12 feet away.  The caddie turned and held out his hand to shake mine, and said "Now THAT was a golf shot!"
    • For the first time since 2021, I made a 3 on the 12th at Stoneleigh.    395 yards, something like 80 feet uphill, I hit a solid drive and a 7-wood to inside a foot.  Even I couldn't miss that one.  I feel like I haven't played a lot of golf this year, but I'm making decent progress.
