Is it important for iron and wedge shafts to be the same material (steel or graphite)?

My old set of Callaway clubs had graphite shafts and my wedge shafts were steal. In my opinion it never effected my game. I never had problems transitioning between the two shafts.

I like steel for my sand & lob wedges, regardless of what type of shaft is on the rest of my irons. I've got a graphite set & a steel set now (one set tends to loft higher, the other lower) and use the same wedges with both sets.

I like the same shaft and flex in my wedges and irons. Not everyone does this, but it makes a seamless transition for me.
