I'm a self-taught golfer, so epiphanies that may seem like no-brainers to others need to come to me over time...

The past few rounds have taught me that I may have been gripping my putter too tightly. Loosening up seems to have made my stroke much more consistent, at least directionally. 2-to-3-foot knee knockers go in much more often... I only missed one yesterday, I usually miss a few more than that.

It was definitely one of the keys to shooting 87 yesterday (par 70). I didn't have my greatest day driving [I never do], but saving bogey with some crucial 1-putts definitely kept the scorecard low.

It's hard to describe, but gripping loosely seems to counteract some of the natural nervousness that comes along with putting.

It's all about tension.  The less tension, the better the swing.  Be it, with the putter or any other club.

I added weight to my putter over the winter. . .well, the putter currently in my bag, lol!  And it has helped me loosen my grip.  Glad I did it

Thank you for the wisdom... I have indeed heard that a gentler grip on any club is generally beneficial.

The only time I grip rather tightly is on short chips where I play the ball at my back toe, and don't break my wrists.
