I agree, I have no idea what Acree knew or saw, I don't know whether he actually had seen his clubs, or whether he was just guessing. I haven't read anyone who knows any of this, but I've read a few guesses and assumptions, including:
Is that particular hypothetical just as ridiculous? I have yet to read anything that supports that particular guess.
A view that I disagree with is that since nobody actually got hurt, and the actual thief was caught, that its all good now. No matter how reckless Acree was, no matter how many people were endangered, its a happy ending for everyone except the thief. Well, I had 8 beers last night, and drove 20 miles home from the golf course, but I got home safe so its all good now.
Look at it from a distance perspective. Do you need to fill the gap between your 3i/3h and Driver. If so, find something that does that. Try out the 2i and if it fills the gap go for it. Otherwise, look at the 3 or 4 wood, possibly even a 5 wood. If you are struggling with the fairway woods, go for a hybrid with a lower loft, say 18* or so.
The second club I can recommend is another wedge, say at around 60* or so for the utility and options it can provide around the green.
Finally, consider something like the chipper or similar type of utility club which helps in your short game.
At the end of the day, see where your greatest weakness is in your game and get a club to help solve that problem.
