So I went and got fitted for some irons yesterday and had a question. My average clubhead speed with a 6 iron was 92 mph and the fitter did a strike test where he puts the ball on a plastic thing and had me strike it to where it scuffs the iron to show contact.

The red area is the area of the club that I was consistently hitting. The only recommendation he made is adjusting the lie 3 degrees. My question is is that something I can grow out of and learn to hit more in the middle of the club because I just cant see myself paying 300 dollars more for a set of irons I can order off the internet for a lot cheaper.

Of all the swing elements, the lie angle a person needs is one of the most consistent.

Three degrees is near the max for bending for lie, so you need a clubsmith who knows how to bend the irons properly. If this clubsmith guarantees the bend, it is worth the money. If you buy online and have an outsider bend the irons, you run into extra $$ so they fit you. And, you risk damage. How much do you save? Don't confuse price and value.

The MP-69 came out circa 2012, and the trade-in price is under $300. Original MSRP was about $900. How much is this shop charging for the MP-69s?

I didn't try out those irons that was just a picture I picked. I hit the mizuno 825s and the mizuno jpx ez and they were the ones I liked best. He told me he could put me in a set of the jpx ez's for around 750 with the shafts he recommended for me and the bend.

Caution: The JPX 825s and the EZs are current production models. Is the online purchase offer legitimate, for $300 less? Beware of counterfeits.

Based on where that red mark is, I'd say you only need about a 1 deg bend. When I buy my next set, it will be for a name supplier (ie Golfsmith or Watts). I don't want to mess with the chance of getting counterfeits.

I would agree with this, too many counterfeits out there to take a chance.

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
