Nothing really different here than your typical on the bubble piece other than some lingo - stuck in - but it's not funny taking a demotion in your job - I guess that's what it's equivalent to in the work world - although playing golf is a nice life, not without its stresses.

I wonder if professional golf has reached a tipping point. The prize money is so good, it attracted many more talented players. But now there's so many, the risk isn't worth it like it used to. Dunno.

Quote:

It's five pages of double-sided A4, headlined "Race to Dubai" - and if you're a European Tour player whose name isn't on the first two sides, this is a stressful time.

Finish outside the top 110 and it's goodbye to your right to play on tour, a scrap to win it back at qualifying school. With only one event left, in Perth next week, anyone who's earned less than about €240,000 (HK$2.4 million) faces losing their livelihood.

Okay, it beats digging ditches, but there were plenty "on the bubble" and desperate for a score at the Hong Kong Open on Sunday.

To be honest if I was in the situation of a Pro Golfer on Tour the pressure if you're around the bubble on the last event has to be up there with or more than the pressure in a Major playoff or last few holes etc.

Generally if you're in contention at a major you're always going to get another chance at a major but loose your card and there's a half decent chance you never come back.

1:  Flipping, 2: Overswing, 3: Stop being Tin Cup

Been playing properly since May 2014, got the bug now, so I'm here forever. Must have watched a billion hours of youtube videos, seems to help!

Being fairly new to the game I had only ever thought about it as get to +5 and you can pretty much go on tour, never actually thought about all those other +5's fighting to stay on it. I imagine the locker room gets a bit edgy, like an office does when redundancies are coming.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
