Why do better golfers prefer hitting irons that will give them a low ball flight versus a higher ball flight for beginners? I can understand that beginners have a difficult time getting the ball lofted and want some help in this area, but why do better players like the low shot? Wouldn't they have a more difficult time with the ball rolling too much when landing on the greens?

I'm planning to upgrade to a new set of irons next season and want to get the correct type for me. I feel that I'm an intermediate golfer that can score a round in the 90s. I asked my golf pro about the Mizuno MP67s and he claimed that they were only for low handicappers because of their lack of forgiveness and low trajectory. He recommended the Mizuno MX25s. The 6 iron I tried felt better than the same from my Callaway Big Bertha set. I did notice though, that the only steel shaft choice is a Dynalite Gold Superlite(R300/ S300) which promotes a high trajectory. I noticed that Mizuno claims that the MP57s have unbelievable forgiveness and offer the Dynamic Gold (R300 / S300) steel shaft option which promotes a low ball flight trajectory.

So, I'm a little confused as for what I should be looking as an oncoming intermediate golfer. Thank you in advance for any suggestions or comments.

Because the better golfer generates height through ball speed (and a clean strike on the golf ball). Something that launches at a lower angle but which continues upward farther into the shot will reach heights plenty high enough.

In other words, it's the difference between a shot that launches high and falls quickly versus a shot that launches comparatively lower but climbs longer. Of course, given that, a good player with "high launching" irons would have trouble playing shots in windy conditions. Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus can hit shots plenty high if they want without the extra help, but it's a bit tougher to go the other way and hit lower shots with higher-launching clubs.

I finally broke down and got lessons over THIS EXACT ISSUE.

I have a really high ball flight, and on days without wind ITS GREAT!

The OTHER 345 days a year its AWFUL. I spent the summer in Santa Fe and my scores consistently reflected WIND.

So I am working on it, and boy, when I get that nice medium-low trajectory with my 8i---the ball holds its line all the way to the ground like it weighs 10 pounds! WIND OR NO WIND!

my old ball flight looked great to the top, then it lost its line on the way down in the wind

I don't have any consistency with my new swing, but BOY was it worth it!

next year baby, I'll have it All!

It took me a while to get this. but that long, low climb is such a beautiful thing, cause it holds its line so nicely. To my eye it looks like its a really heavy ball, cause the wind doesn't affect it near as much as my old BALLOON ball!
