Hi guys. Been lurking for years but decided to join the party. My first question is about my shaft flex being too stiff. I have callaway Razr x Muscleback irons with rifle 6.5 shafts. They were put in the clubs by the original owner. When he passed I got them back from his wife. I originally bought them with gs95 r flex shafts 1* upright 1/2" long but had to sell them. I've gotten better with my ball striking but it seems like the shafts are way too stiff for me. I make center of the face contact in a regular basis but I can't the ball in the air with the mid to long irons consistently unless I over swing, which leads to problems. It just feels like way too much effort to get the shaft to load and its very hard on my back. I'm between 85-95 with a driver swing and play regular shafts in my woods so I know theoretically I should be in a lesser flex. Should I go with an r300 shaft for better feel and distance?

First, let's review your club-buying sequence. Is this what happened?

  1. Bought RazrX Muscleback irons with GS95 R-flex shafts, and sold them.
  2. Bought used set of RazrX Muscleback irons with Rifle 6.5 shafts.

Also, did the clubs you bought used have Rifle 6.5 shafts, or Project X (with PX label) Rifle 6.5 shafts? (The straight-up Rifles - nonPX - have reappeared in recent months).

These recent True Temper video (TT owns Rifle and PX models) could help you decide.

You are pretty much average swing speed for the club market. I would look at weaker stiff flex or regular flex. Might want to look at mid kick point as well.

If you still struggle with long irons then check out hybrids or long irons that have a lot of game improvement technology to get some more height.
