skycaddie touch vs garmin

so after today i realized ill get more use out of a gps unit then a rangefinder, especially since i play different courses and most ive only been on a cpl of times. ive researched this and cant find too much info, or he thread starts and kinda gets hijacked and gets away from post.

 

for those that have experience with which do you prefer and way, skycaddie touch, garmin g6, g7

 

i have a skycaddie 2.5 and have a history there and with upgrade the touch will only cost me 199.99 with my account transferring over but that is not a deal breaker. if the garmins are much better then its no question which one ill go with. thanks

Do you have a smartphone? Try downloading the Game Golf app. The club tagging is awesome, but even if you don't use that, the GPS range finding interface is excellent, with satellite maps instead of the cartoons some GPS units use. And it's 100% free. I myself have a Garmin G3 and it's fine for a simple yardage but the game golf app is more useful for layup distances and different flag positions.

I have had my share of Skycaddie devices.  I now have the Touch.  

Before I give more info, let me say this...I have probably downloaded every free app you can for my Galaxy Note smartphone.  The phone is big and has a huge screen so Golf GPS apps show up nicely.  Some are decent, some are not.  Some of the apps you can tell are based upon imagery that was taken after a huge rain.  There are lakes on the app that simply do not exist.  If I were hard pressed for money, I would go with a free app.

I messed around with a couple of Garmin devices other have when we played together and I simply was not impressed by them over the functionality of the Skycaddie.  Let me say that this was when I was using the Skycaddie SGX.  

I traded my SGX in for the Touch.  I too have a history with Skycaddie and paying the annual fee for International (which I use) does not bother me.  

Pros and Cons of Touch

Pros:

• You do not have to load a course before you go play it so you do not have to carry a laptop around just in case you want to play a new course you have never played.
• Finds your course fairly easily 
• Small but decent screen
• Battery life is decent if you do not set screen to full bright (can get 2 rounds in easily on 1 charge)
• Like all Skycaddies, courses have been mapped/measured and do not use GPS satellite imagery for distances

Cons:

• They have not quite mastered the art of "touch screen" with the Touch device.  It is not as responsive as it should be for touch screen.  
• Loses itself on course where holes are fairly close together much worse than the SGX did.  
• The side buttons are not very responsive and require an inordinate amount of pressure. 
• You can turn off some features such as keep score and yet if you turn it sideways you get the scorecard (why skycaddie why).
