I'm 6'3 and I play irons +1/2" long inch 2° upright. I've always hit these irons very well and I have a 16° hybrid that is 41" inches that I also feel comfortable with. However, I am pretty uncomfortable with the driver in my hands. I feel that normal length drivers, 45.5" is what I am currently playing, require that I flatten my swing and I don't feel as comfortable. Effectively, I need two swings, one for my irons and one for my driver. I was recently playing with a friend who carries a 42 inch 3 wood, when I hit it I couldn't believe how comfortable it felt. I felt like I was using my regular swing and could go after it, move the ball both ways, and keep it in the fairway.

I am now thinking that a shorter driver (Im thinking somewhere between 42.5 and 44") may benefit people with upright swings. There just isn't enough room under my hands for a 45.5 inch driver to pass through, so I am forced to swing around my body. For people who swing flat w irons already, the longer shaft on a driver wouldn't seem to be an issue to me.

I know there are a million posts on shorter drivers and pros/cons but I've never read anything related to upright/flat swings and driver length. I also know some people would say to flatten my swing, but I have a very effective swing with every club but the driver and I don't want to mess with it. Please no need to recite tom wishon's writings here.

I am wondering if anyone has addressed this before or has any experience with trying a shorter driver shaft with an upright swing?

Everyone's swing gets progressively flatter with the longer clubs and shorter shafts are easier to control for everyone. I don't think it has anything to do with height.

    • I like a course that plays tough for a major, but this is what matters. Back and forth, multiple players in contention and drama on Sunday.
    • Day 15:  Practiced my swing, no hitting, just focused on all the feels.
    • Which makes it tougher to win tournaments, and speaks to the strength and depth of fields. It's unknowable how to specifically rate a player (i.e. is Jack a 99.1 and Tiger is a 99.8?), but since the format for PGA Tour and major championships has remained basically the same, by comparing records and the players that took part, you can pretty directly compare across eras and derive that Tiger > Jack. Do you even know what side of this discussion I'm on? That's not my opinion or belief. Did you quote — and reply — to the right person? Doesn't seem like it. Okay, I think it's clear now you've replied to the wrong person. I have many times.
    • Fun to see a competitive Sunday leaderboard. Glad to see Viktor playing well again, especially after reading the story about him the other day where he didn’t seem to be in a great spot. Seems Joe gets him playing his best.
    • Day 66. Short game practice, 100y and in. Better than yesterday but a ways to go.   Followed by working on impact technique. When I work on where the club ends up post impact, I seem to hit the ball much better. Feels like day to day incremental progress.
