I have a hypothetical question about an amateur turning pro. Say, Colt Knost(2007 US Amateur Public Links and Amateur Champ) keeps his amateur status and excepts a invitation to play the Masters at Augusta.

Say he then, wins the Masters.

Can/Could he turn pro right then and get to keep the 1st place purse? (ie after he won)

Does he have to announce he is a pro before he enters a Tourney?

Why? Why not?

Always wondered about this....

You must declare prior to playing. I think you've figured out one good reason why.

Why would any amature, before playing in a PGA event, not declare professionalism?

Pros? Cons?

A lot of amatuer players routinely try to get in, and play, PGA tour events for the experience and to see how their game stacks up. Professinal golf might be in their plans in a couple years or so, but for the moment they're probably committed to their college team.

No, although he would be a Masters champion. He won't get the money, but I'm pretty sure he'd get the TOUR exemption and good sponsor money if he turned pro right afterward. A small handful of amateurs win a professional event as amateurs. A certain someone (not me) won a handful of majors as an amateur, but that's another story. I was going to list them after the word 'amateur,' but it feels weird to list Scott Verplank, Phil Mickelson, Ai Miyazato, and Daniel Summerhays as amateurs, although they once were.

Does Summerhays' win get him anything special on the NWT next year? I believe after q-school, he is not even fully exempt on the NWT.

Two-year exemption for the win, I believe. Also an exemption into some stage of Q-School; second stage?

If it were just the option to play for the rest of 2007, I doubt he would've taken it. But he knows he's fully exempt for 2008 for that tour.
