Just ordered a set of Bridgestone j15 mb irons with dg x100 shafts, just my second set of irons since I started playing in 2005 (current set tm rac lt2).

According to the simulator at PGA  SS, the 6 iron was carrying 196-199yds at a launch angle of 11-13* with 6100-6400 spin rate, swing speed 93-95mph.

My current irons have the stock true temper 110gram stiff shafts, don't know what model as the labels are faded, but I hit the 6 iron a high flighted 190yds with a good amount of spin, sometimes I see the ball come back as much as 3ft with the 6i.

My concern is if that launch angle is too low? Should I be worried about the x100 being too much shaft for me?

From checking TM spec sites, your RAC LT2 has the stock TT T-Step Professional shaft (110 gr., Parallel tip .370). It was a proprietary shaft made for TM, with TM labeling on it.

Your Bridgestone J15 MB have the 130-gr. DG X100 shafts.

Male pro golfers average about 94 mph SS with a 5i, so you have very good SS with your 6i.

Your new J15 MB irons have a stiffer shaft that is 20 gr. heavier than your RAC shafts. You ask if the launch angle is too low. Sounds like you're getting decent carry on the J15s. Are you getting any backspin?

Wish I could help you more, but I'm not an expert on ideal spin rates on irons.

As close as the numbers are between RAC and J15, go out on the course with the J15s and see if they work better.

This assumes, of course, that you are not planning to cancel the J15 order.

Focus, connect and follow through!

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
