I recently picked up an R11s 12* driver and it works great for me. I have it set on the high loft setting making it 13.5. I have a as of about 93 and can get it up to 95-96 if I remember to loosen up a bit. I typically average about 225 to 230 and end up around 250-260. I used to use a 10.5 Supertri and the new driver is straighter and about 10 yards longer. It's pretty fun hitting it by other people when it technically has a 3 wood loft.

How Does a Beginner Pick the Best Ball?
marengo replied to dru925's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
go to lostgolfballs.com and try as many as you like. They are really cheap and I cant tell the difference between the AAAAA grade and brand new ones from the store. Get a dozen of a bunch of different ones and give them a try. Another good thing is that you wont feel as bad if you end up not liking the ones you got because they are so cheap. They usually have a pretty good selection too. -
What size glove do you normally wear? I have small hands and use a small size glove. I have undersized grips because it is easier to close the clubface when I swing. If I use standard grips, I tend to leave the face open and end up slicing or blocking it right (R handed).

Does anyone know which manufacturers are still making 9 woods? Are there any current offerings or will I have to go hunting for a really old used one?

Callaway Razr X or Ping G15 or Mizuno JPX 800 ?
marengo replied to Matchupo's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I picked up a set of the JPX800s about a month back and love them. I got a set with the Nippon 950 shafts which are pretty lightweight. I am coming from a mixed set of TM TP MC/MB because I needed more forgiveness. While I do miss the feeling of a forged iron, I dont miss only getting that feeling on 1 out of 10 shots. If you mishit the 800s, there is not much of a penalty distance wise. These irons launch high and go pretty far even though the lofts are pretty jacked up (44 PW). I tried out the RazrX irons but they just felt too heavy for me. I prefer a lighter clubhead and a lighter overall weight. The weight of the Razr's just threw me off balance too much on the backswing. I also tried the G15s. I really wanted to like them but the huge sole just put me off. Because of the way they looked, I couldnt put a confident swing on with them. Overall, I am very happy with the 800s. Good balance, nice feel, and the head definitely doesnt look like an SGI iron. The topline is on the thicker side but I think it just looks big to me because I am comparing them with my old irons. I like what they did with the sole grind as well. It has a larger sole to help get the ball in the air but it really looks a lot thinner than it really is due to the different grind that they use. That being said, since you are going to be investing a good amount of money in your next set, try and get out to a store where you can try out all of the different ones. You may find out that you play best with an iron set that you never initially considered. This is the perfect time to invest $100 or so to get fitted as well. That way you know that it is your swing that is causing errant shots and not your ill fitted equipment. -
13 degree driver for a shallow swingers?
marengo replied to Maverick's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
What is your driver SS? Mine is around 93 and I play a 13.5* G15. I can consistently hit it out about 250, usually pretty straight (sometimes with a slight draw). I tend to deloft all of my clubs because of my bad swing so it was hard to get a good ballflight even with an 11.5* driver. Nothing wrong with a high lofter driver, especially with a slower swing speed. You might find that you get more distance with more control with a 13* driver. I think if you go try one out, you will be pleasantly suprised at how well it works. -
I am selling a Miyazaki CKua 39R shaft. It has a brand new white/black NDMC grip and an R9/11 tip installed. Sold my supertri so this has to go. Good lightweight shaft for smooth swingers. Mid launch with low spin shaft.

Custom Headcover by Delila - Post Yours Here

I just got my custom headcover in the mail today. Custom mallet putter cover by Delila (girlygolfer.com). This fits perfectly. Better than the stock headcover. Lets see pics of your custom headcovers! What do you think? -
I had this installed last week and have 3 rounds with it so far. It has cut my draw down from 15-20 yards to about 10 yards. My miss is a hook and this will not do anything to change that. This will make your good shots better but will not keep you from making bad shots. A 60 yard hook is still a bad shot if it is cut down to a 55 yard hook. I still have to get used to my alignment with this installed. I used to start my shots way over the right rough and draw it back to the middle/left side of the fairway. Now the ball will land just off the fairway to the right. Sometimes it will hit the very right side of the fairway and sometimes it will hit the rough. I would recommend having one of these installed. There is no downside of having it installed and you can reinstall it if you ever change drivers. It works for me and will keep using it in all of my future drivers. Given how hot of an item this is right now, you can easy sell it if you end up not liking it. Just go into it knowing that it will not turn a slice into a fade or a hook into a draw. This will tame your draw/fade to a more playable flight.

Rife Two Bar Blade or Rife Trinidad??
marengo replied to mazza78's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I have a 2bar hybrid mallet (not quite the same) and absolutely love it. The rollgroove face puts such a pure roll on the ball. No hopping at all. I ended up purchasing the extra weights as well. I like being able to change the weight before the round if the greens are slow/fast. The 2 bars definitely help on off center putts as well. The face does not open/close on impact if you hit it off the toe/heel. Very solid putters. -
Have you ever checked your swing on a launch monitor? Just asking but your distance seems pretty good for a low/mid 80s SS. With a lower swing speed, usually you would want a higher launch for more carry. Not like 17-18* but 14-15 would be perfect. I had a fitting and my speed is 91* with a 10* launch. I used a 10.5 supertri and was only carrying it out about 200-210 on my best drives. It would roll out to 230-240 because the descending angle was only about 10-15*. I just changed to a 13.5 G15 with a firm regular shaft. Now I can carry the ball about 230 and get about 260 on a good drive. I still hit the ball fairly low and I am still searching for a good shaft for my swing.

I think you could tell people that it means whatever you want it to. Just dont try it out on anyone who can read kanji. Its kind of like when people get kanji tattoos. Most of them have no idea of what it means but is taking the artist's word for it. I have one but I know mine is right because I painted the original calligraphy.

I took my driver into my local shop to have the shaft replaced. Nothing particularly wrong with the stock shaft (G15) but I'm always tinkering around with the equipment. I asked them to install a ProLaunch Axis Blue with a ShotMaker insert. I go pick up the club yesterday and they installed a ProLaunch Blue instead. One of the old model shafts. I know that some people say that the specs of the two shafts are similar but from what I saw on the website, there are other new tech stuff built into the Axis shaft. I am playing in a tournament on friday/saturday so I cant bring the driver back to the shop today. Is there any noticable differences between these two shafts? Is it wrong to try it out this weekend and have them put in the Axis shaft that I requested if this one doesnt feel right? I dont want to go through the hassle of getting the Axis shaft installed if there really isnt any noticable difference between the two shafts. The Axis one does look a whole lot better that this one though. Any suggestions?

Post your personal golf bloopers or funniest golf moments! :)
marengo replied to blackstallion10's topic in Golf Talk
I was at the driving range in downtown SF when I first started playing. I was hitting balls when a guy plops his bag in the stall next to mine. He was all decked out with a huge staff bag with all brand new Callaway Hawkeye gear. This was when they first came out. He pulls out his driver and 3 wood and starts swinging them back and forth trying to loosen up. I have seen people do this with a couple irons but never with woods/drivers. His swings start getting longer and faster then.. BOOM! Both clubheads just exploded. It sounded like a car crash. Pieces of the heads flew everywhere like shrapnel. One piece flew by me and stuck in my bag. I dont know how he managed to keep from being shredded. The flex of the graphite shafts kicked the heads together so hard that both were obliterated. Imagine teeing up a titanium wood head then taking a full swing at it with your driver. -
It says "keep talking in my backswing and I will nunchuk you to death" just kidding. i think it just says Nakashima

Experiences wth a real driver fitting
marengo replied to inthecup's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I had a driver fitting last week. Best money I have ever spent ($50). My old driver was a 10.5 supertri with a Fujikura fit on max 56S shaft. I was set up on one of those Vector launch monitors. They had me hit about 10 drives with my current set up and took out the mishits. My SS was about 91, launch angle 10, ballspeed 130, backspin 900. No wonder I couldnt get the ball in the air. They checked the frequency of my shaft and it was about a 6.4. A little stiff for my swing. I changed the settings on the driver to the L setting which gave me a loft of 11.5. This helped some with the launch angle but did nothing to the backspin. I then tried out an R11, Burner2.0, Titleist 910, Cobra S3, and G15. We went through a bunch of different shaft/head combinations to see what would give me the best results. In the end I picked up a 13.5 G15. Never thought I would buy a club like this. One of the benefits of a driver fitting is that it will definitely open you up to drivers/manufacturers that you probably wouldnt have considered. Go get a fitting and try and stay as open minded as possible. Dont pay attention to the flex of the shaft and focus more on the results. If it turns out that you need to play a regular shaft when you always played a stiff, go with it. You cant argue with results. -
I am in the exact same boat as you (except for the height/weight). I am 5'6" and fluctuate from 170-175 and I am 35. I picked up a clic-gear late last year and it was the best investment I had ever made. I couldnt carry a bag for the entire round because my back would just give out on me halfway through the round. Not only did I save about $15 per round but I started noticing differences a couple months later (only play 5-6 times a month). The one sure way of figuring out if you are losing weight is how your clothes fit. I would find that I needed to tighten my belt to the next hole about a month into it and then the next hole a couple months later. My pants started dragging on the floor as well. Good luck on your journey. Just starting it is the hardest part.

It is probably the most stupid reason here but I chose to go with a 6 and 7 MC only because I didnt want to have one club that was not like the others. I only play a 6-PW. If I had all MB's and only one MC, the set would just look strange to me and honestly I probably wouldnt hit the lone club as well knowing it. I could use a little more forgiveness in my 150 club anyway.

I am in the same boat. Maybe a blade half-inado?

I currently play a combo set of TM TP MC/MB's. I also have a set of TM ICW5's in the garage gathering dust. My reasons for playing these: 1) I love the slim topline and the looks of these clubs. Much nicer than the bulky look of my previous Irons (Burner 2.0s/Cobra S9s) 2) I have been taking lessons and I am trying to change from a sweeper/picker to a digger. I think the thinner sole of these irons might help me learn better versus the very wide soles of the (S)GI irons 3) The smaller heads of these really makes me focus on contact and swinging within myself. The size of my other irons gave me a false sense of confidence. I would over swing with them; kind of like you do with a 460cc driver versus an old persimmon 1W.

I play a 4 and 5 hybrid and recently put an R11 7 wood in the bag. Best move I made so far. I use it as my 210 yard club as I am not a very long hitter - 240 Driver. The shallow face makes it really easy to hit off the deck. I tried the titanium one but I didnt hit it as well because the head is slightly larger. Still trying to figure out that club though. I hook it badly off the tee but it goes dead straight off the deck. I thought it was going to be the other way around.

Combo TM TP MC/MB Iron set - Pics/Review
marengo replied to marengo's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Right now I have the 6 and 7 in MC and 8-PW in MB. I think I am probably going to pick up the 5MC soon as well. I would highly recommend giving these a try. If I had to do it again, I would probably go with the stock DG shafts rather than the DG XP ones. I am going to stick with these shafts for a while to see if I can get used to them. Also, to everyone else talking about if blades/MB's are appropriate for high handicappers, I think it is definitely a personal preference. I was a 20-25 because my putting and chipping absolutely sucked. Eight 3 putts a round will really mess with your overall handicap. I was also trying to work through a wicked duck hook with my driver. I say go with what feels good. If you are a beginner looking for new irons, try them out. It couldnt hurt to swing them a few times. You might end up with a set of SGI/GI irons but at least you can rule out these irons based on personal experience and not on what people said you should/shouldn't play. Personally, I would recommend everyone at least giving these irons a try. You may not like them but I would give you all the credit in the world for trying them. -
Hi everyone. I live in the bay area in California and have been playing on and off for a while. While in college in 1996, my roommates all worked at the Olympic Club. Needless to say, they got me into golf. My very first set is one of the old rental sets they had there that they were going to throw out. It was a set of TM ICW5's. Not the best beginner set by far. It was actually missing the 7i so I got a Tommy Armour 845s Silver Scot. You can probably tell which iron I hit the best. I am not even sure how I got hooked given how hard these were to hit. I almost killed one of my roommates with a wicked hosel shot. I continued to play with the TM's for a little while and bought a new set of TM Firesoles. Much better for a beginner. I continued to play for a couple years until I graduated and had to stop once I joined the work force. I started back up in 2008 with a set of Cobra S9's. Pretty much had to re-learn to play. Wavered around a 30-35 for about a year of not playing that much. Late last year I started getting serious about getting better. I picked up a set of the Burner 2.0s and got myself down to about a 16. I was way to inconsistent with these and just picked up a combo set of TM TP MC/MB. I think it is the best set yet. Partially because I am a much better player now and partially because they look really nice. The small heads are kind of forcing me to become a better ballstriker. I am not trying to kill it like I did with the burners. I am trying to get down to a 10 by the end of this season but I know it is going to be tough. Putting sucks.
