Is Golf Available Where You Live? (COVID-19 Edition)
laconic517 replied to iacas's topic in Golf Talk
My League starts this Friday. We typically play a closest to the pin on one of the par 3s. Anybody have any experience with this since the outbreak? Since the marker has to be moved by multiple players we have thought about scrapping it all together or clipping hand sanitizer to the marker so anyone who moves it can use it. Not sure of any other real options. Any ideas?- 962 replies

2018 Ryder Cup at Le Golf National - Paris, France
laconic517 replied to lastings's topic in Tour Talk
I think the posts about it being an exhibition and players not caring is sour grapes. The players care (especially the younger guys) they just lost. No excuses about it they just need to play better. I really wish there was a better score tracker out there to see how well these guys were playing relative to par. I always have a hard time telling if its one team playing well and winning vs another team playing poorly and giving it away. I think rydercup.com had something but it was giving players pars in team matches even if they were out of the hole which i dont agree with. One had Reed at -3 for 2 rounds which seems odd with all the water balls. If a pair shoots 63 best ball and loses to a 62 or 61 you gotta just credit the other team. Same for singles. Euros just played better. Maybe the americans could have played more strategic golf but other than that i dont see how Furyk can be criticized. -

Ugly ugly morning matches. Wtf has Reed been doing. Any thoughts on him playing with his hero (TW) putting to much pressure on him? Would seem like Tiger Koepka could be a good pairing. -
PGA at Whistling Straits: Thoughts on attending my first major
laconic517 replied to Spiethismyhero's topic in Tour Talk
I was there on Sunday. First time attending a major. Immediately when i arrived i thought a lot of the elderly or extremely out of shape people were in trouble with the heat and all of the hills. That said, that isnt the courses fault and people should know better before attending. I think the hills actually helped because you could sit down ontop of them and see quite a bit of action. My only beefs with the event were the lack of scoreboards and screens and that they did not think through their water distribution very well. In that heat every hole should have had a water station on it. Quite frequently you would have to walk 3 holes back in to get water unless you ran into one of the very few carts out there selling beverages. -
my biggest pet peeve is needless heather that just slows down play and bogs down the golf course. not to mention it just brings an inordinate amount of luck into play since it is difficult to find your ball in there unless there are objects near by that let you gauge the depth of your shot. It just is artificially tricking up the golf course to produce higher scores. Also, courses with far too many hazards that dont allow you to use your shotmaking ability/short game to recover. For example, drive the ball into a hazard that is just waste high grass. Or if there are are monster pine trees that have their branches on them all the way to the ground so that you are basically taking unplayables if you hit into them. Oaks are much better since they still can give you a swing and if you can curve your ball a bit you can get back into play.

Anchored Putters Rules Change (Effective January 1, 2016)
laconic517 replied to mvmac's topic in Rules of Golf
I dont understand the whole potential lawsuit side of this. rules change all the time in every sport and you never hear of a lawsuit. I am sure that plenty of the physical corners in the NFL experienced some sort of dropoff after the contact rule started being enforced. Should they be able to file a lawsuit? What about the implementation of the quasi zone in the NBA? Can players who could bully guys 1 on 1 file a lawsuit? What about handchecking? The whole lawsuit argument is really stupid and will make golf look incredibly bad if anyone actually went through with it. -
2013 Masters Discussion Thread, Update with Tiger's Illegal Drop (Post #343)
laconic517 replied to iacas's topic in Tour Talk
This isnt fair though. Under all circumstances where a potential violation occurs, the tournament would ask/notify the player prior to them signing their card. Augusta screwed up the whole situation by not talking to him prior to him signing his card. If you are going to penalize Tiger for this we should stop notifying players of penalties based on TV footage during the round to make it fair for everyone. -

I think they realized they would be screwing him over because they didnt do their due diligence when investigating the rule. If they hadnt been notified about it until today I have a feeling they would have DQ'ed him. -

If you want to do it that way though you should never inform the players of a penalty so its even for everyone. If its truly a players responsibility and you want to protect the field, you need to make it the same for everyone (which obviously wont happen because not every shoft by every player is on camera). Augusta blew it plain and simple. -

yeah Why there isnt a rules official with every group, especially for a major, is beyond me. The purse is 8 million dollars lol and the masters has only 4mins of commercials. Theres no monetary excuse. -

Brandel told a story about Bobby Locke a while ago. Moving his coin because it was in someones line and then forgetting to move it back to tap in to win the british open. His argument was that he gained no advantage because hed make the putt anyway. IMO thats a cop out and if a rule is truly a rule it should be enforced no matter what. I feel like theres definitely precedence for this ruling based on the Bobby Locke example. -
Actually no, it was brought in for balls that wobble on greens or in the fairway/rough that the player has no possible way to see. Things like marking your ball on the green and when you pull your marker away it it moves ever so slightly. The rule isnt in place for rule errors by the players. EDIT: and yes Brandel is a douche and has been ever since the Tiger scandal. If I didnt know better id say Tiger banged his wife or one of his daughters. I dont think hes way in the wrong here though. Im starting to think its really a matter of opinion. ;\

2013 Masters Discussion Thread, Update with Tiger's Illegal Drop (Post #343)
laconic517 replied to iacas's topic in Tour Talk
No, it sounded like they reviewed everything before he finished his round -> determined no infraction occured (without apparently consulting Tiger, wtf?) -> more people start talking about it -> they review AGAIN and determine there was in fact an infraction and they were wrong but use this rule to cover themselves for being lazy and not consulting Tiger before he signed his card. And they completely are mis-using the rule if you go by the rules wording. It clearly says you cannot "not" disqualify someone because of ignorance. The examples for where the rule wouldn't/would apply clearly show that the committee wouldn't be justified in waiving the DQ. -

why didnt the committee go and ask him about the drop before he signed his card instead of just deeming it not an infraction? That was pretty stupid if you ask me. -

Thats your subjective opinion. What if I felt like he had to drop it right behind his divot? :) How close is close? The spirit of the rule seems to be if you have a lost ball and need to return back to where you previously hit. Obviously something like dropping away from a tree or something is a completely different story and against the spirit of the rule. -

any chance that he could play it off that he dropped farther back based on the assumption that his ball would roll forward to where he hit from originally? If he dropped directly at his divot it looked like he would have rolled forward. Should he have re-dropped if he assumed it would roll forward but it didnt? -
Didnt callaway make a mistake several years ago with a non-conforming driver? First thing I thought of when I heard about this thing was he better make sure its conforming :)

2013 WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral Discussion Thread
laconic517 replied to iacas's topic in Tour Talk
Thats already happened to him. It was on the 18th at Torrey when Tiger got his first win after switching to Hank Haney. I think CHIII was 2-3 strokes back but he nearly jarred it for eagle but instead it went back into the water :( This was final round mind you :) -
man, if he did get back with her with that pre-nup and she decided to be vindictive and not sleep with him regularly omfg. It has to be gutwrenching for a guy like Tiger Woods to be relegated to some handaction because his wife won't have sex with him.

does anyone else think he didnt fumble the answer that badly? Does he sound like Tiger Woods behind the podium? Absolutely not. He sounded like lots of golf kids I've met playing in junior golf/city tournaments. If hes not bothered by the way he comes across in interviews I dont see why anyone else should be. He stated his opinion that he felt his offense wasn't that bad in comparison to what some other players do on tour. Big deal. He stuck by his convictions. One thing i found interesting was it kinda felt like she was hinting at him getting some weed in Hawaii when she was asking him if he was seeing the sites/etc. Lol. the only part I had a problem with was her asking him what he learned from the situation like he was a child or something. He should have just said he learned not to get caught next time, or maybe say he'll only smoke in states with a Medical marijuana card. TBH marijuana isn't even a big deal in today's society. golf needs to get with the times. Pretty soon it will be legal anyway. (this is coming from someone who doesn't care to smoke at all). edit: when I say golf I don't mean the PGA tour, I mean just golf as a whole if the community gets upset of marijuana.

I still blame golf courses for a large portion of the slow play. 6 minute tee times, thick rough/tall grass/not clearly marked hazards, all add up. If I was a golf course designer that was making a muni for your everyday golfers play, I would NEVER put heather/tall grass on the course. Its absolutely asinine and just bogs down the golf course. At least if you have water out there its an obvious hazard. I cant believe how many courses I have played that have areas that arent marked red that clearly should be (assuming you want to keep a reasonable pace of play). This causes people to look for their ball, etc which takes up considerable time when you have to do it every other hole (depending on the group you are playing with). Combine that with the 6 minute tee times and you are in for 5-6 hour rounds. Yes golfers do contribute to the slow play as well (I can't stand playing in city tournaments anymore because of the 5.5hr rounds, people grinding over putts/iron shots when they are going to shoot 82 just like everyone else in that day group and we have 0 chance of placing in the top 10 or winning money) but I still believe the golf courses could alleviate a majority of the problems. If people are hacks there are situations where they really can't speed up if they want to actually post a legit score. Blade balls over a green a few times and its going to make for a slow hole. Also, with hacks, you cant even walk up to your ball to play ready golf, as if you do you will clearly be in harms way of the occasional shank or scull or whatever. You basically have to stand behind them in order to be 100% safe. I myself am a pretty fast golfer (I can only think of one of my buddies who may be faster, and thats only because he takes 0 practice swings) but this obsession with speed and blaming the golfers needs to kinda stop. Unless you are going to set a handicap limit, or you want people not to post actual scores, the majority of the blame has to fall on the golf courses

Why Does John Daly Keep Getting Sponsor's Exemptions?
laconic517 replied to mvmac's topic in Tour Talk
Who cares, it is about drawing people to the gate. Not many people, if any, are coming to see Mike Weir play.
