  2. You should wait for awhile if you can and hit them side by side. Even if your local shop stops selling the 710's, there will be a ton of golf shops in SoCal that will continue to sell off their inventory, should you decide you like the 710's better. I used to live in Orange County, and one thing I miss is the selection of golf shops that came in all shapes and sizes--big stores, mom and pop stores, pro shops. You'll be able to track down somewhere selling them both. As far as the AP Irons go? I recently went from some old Callaway Irons to AP1s, and the difference was incredible. Within a few weeks, I had confidence in my iron shots and had my best round of the season. What I think is most remarkable is that the ball flight changes with the irons, I have hit with a much higher trajectory without losing any distance. The ball jumps off the clubface and then seems to kick into an extra gear as it climbs. Very satisfied with the golfclubs. Best of luck with the irons--you can't really go wrong here!
  3. I would seriously consider doing a stretch-band/flexibility type workout instead of "bulking up" over the winter season. I'm a believer that increased flexibility and toning may provide you with a smoother swing, while bulking up may actually mean more tweaks for your swing come springtime. I use the winter as an opportunity to evaluate. I look at each component of my game and I figure out what goals I want to set for next season. I start to work towards those goals with practice sessions in the golfdome.
  4. One thing I think is essential to a good swing is a good foundation and a good "loading" of the hips. Make sure that as you come back into your backswing, you shift your weight to your back hip and as you come through the ball you naturally let your weight transfer through the ball. This is where you get alot of power from. Judging by your video, your swing is primarily arms. The "loading" of your hips should never feel like a conscious effort, but rather come as the byproduct of an even and controlled backswing, just as the followthrough should be the natural weight transfer as you swing and contact the ball. Remember, a golf swing isn't something that needs to be forceful, fast, or 'noisy'. A smooth and "effortless" swing is what you are shooting for. I would suggest you watch the videos above, watch a pro on TV with good mechanics--someone like Ernie Els or Fred Couples are my favorites--and practice. Best of luck!
  5. Grew up playing golf from age 8...few sets of lessons...hours upon hours upon hours of practice and lots of time on the course. My handicap went from 15 to 10 down to my low of 3 for a time and now has settled at about 8 over about the last 4 years, when i have had the time and money to commit to the sport. Just keep playing, and you will improve.
  6. I second the Nike SQ Sumo2 4 wood...plays very well and has a nice high launch of the ball. I got mine off eBay for a very reasonable price.
  7. Focus on doing your best. Visualize the ideal shot in your mind before addressing the ball. Remember to relax and have fun!
  8. Exactly. Check and see where the ball is in your stance. This may help you straighten out.
  9. Think of your swing as gliding along a circle at a 45 degree angle. When you bring the club back, you want to not bring it inside or "turn" into your backswing as your hips load for the followthrough. Instead, the club should come back along the same line of trajectory as it sits at address. In your backswing, the club comes very far back and nearly hits your opposite shoulder- perhaps a slowing down of the backswing and a more controlled motion may produce better control on your shots. You do not need to "swing hard" or bring the club back hard as you are loading your hips to produce a shot of great distance, that is done with correct swing mechanics and natural followthrough motion. This will also help your followthrough--again with the circle analogy, as you come through and impact the ball, the club should swing through in a controlled fashion along the same line as initial address and backswing. This is what allows you to strike the ball squarely. The club at address, backswing, and followthrough are all along the same circular trajectory. Hope this helps!
  10. My workout consists of a daily 5mi elliptical session, mostly at a 6:40 mi pace. I typically do this 5-6x a week. This keeps my legs toned and in good shape. I've done weight training in the past, but found that adding "bulky" muscle is not helpful in refining the range of motion or smoothness of my swing. I think what has helped my golf game the most is exchanging the free weights and bench press for resistance bands. With resistance bands, you can do a low weight, high rep, high intensity workout in your arms, back, and shoulders. It is especially helpful in toning and building moderate muscle. I think that the resistance bands have greatly increased my flexibility and comfort in swinging the club. Anyone out there not looking to build bulk but enhance their golf game ought to give them a try. You don't need to be bulked out to hit the ball far, the club and the correct swing will take care of that by themselves.
  11. Hello all, I am new here but am an avid lover of all things golf. I looked at the Nike VR Wedges today and they look very nice. Anyone have any experience with them? Do the grooves give you good shot control and precision around the green? Thought I would solicit some opinions before going through with a purchase. Eric
