  2. Thanks I got a free round at Traditions
  3. Google does a pretty good job in their maps if you type in golf course you get nearly all of them.
  4. Not the OP, but I went out and ended up playing Terra Lago South and Mission Hills Dinah Shore on Saturday. Played Terra Lago because I found a good morning tee time for $50. I thought it was well worth it. I am not a fan of the cement irrigation streams, also at silver rock, but still happy with the decision to play there. Interestingly enough I read the greens on the back 9 at Terra Lago were having trouble but I thought they were better than the front. I wonder if they alternate cutting days because on the front the ball didn't run out and died in the last 6 inches.
  5. I've read desert dunes is the best bang for buck in the area.
  6. Joe thanks for posting this article. I have no idea why courses want to overseed. Maybe someone with experience could tell me why. Is it a concern with growth and divots on courses that receive significant play? I hate playing courses that are overseeded.
  7. I think you missed the part about moving to the listed places because of a job (military).
  8. Honestly you can't go wrong with any of your choices. My wife is stationed in Ft. Walton. For base courses you have the course on Hurlburt (fun place and in pretty good shape), two courses on Eglin (one of the courses is in the discussion for best DOD courses), and then Tyndall isn't too far away. For off base golf you don't have anything that is top 100 quality but it's affordable and pretty good (lots of places offer military discounts). Tampa is the area I know the least about but a resort that may become Bandon Dunes of FL ( http://www.streamsongresort.com/ ) is going to be opening pretty close by at the end of the year and I wouldn't be surprised if both of the courses there become the top public courses in FL. We have a place in Pinehurst. There are people that live in Pinehurst and drive to Bragg (about 45 min to the main gate from Pinehurst). As far as the military courses the two courses at Bragg are probably the worst military course options of the four places you listed, but certainly not the worst military courses there are. That being said there is a lot of other public golf options in the area that are really good. I'd recommend the bit about living in Pinehurst. Most of the residents are a bit older but it has a good community feel. If you have kids it's safe, there are pools, there is the lake and the golf is great. Pinehurst often gets billed as being expensive golf but if you buy a house and join the Pinehurst CC you can play #1-#6 and your membership fees are reasonable for the quality of the golf you get (the fee per month is less than the walk up rate on #2). I started my career in Co Springs and can't wait to get back. I've played 100's of rounds on the two courses at the AF academy. The Blue course is my favorite DOD course. The course on Fort Carson is pretty good and Peterson is alright. People have knocked the fact that there is a golf season. I can tell you I played in every month of the year (occasionally the turf was frozen but I was still playing) while we lived there. The mountain states are definitely under rated golf states.
  9. Pasatiempo used goats for a few years in a row. http://pasatiempomaintenance.com/2011/10/19/theyre-baaaaack/
  10. With all the recomendations for Coronado I don't want you going in thinking your going to get a perfectly manicured course. It's a fun round and the price is right. As far as Sea-N-Air the front and back 9 are very different. The front has a man made pond in play on nearly every hole. I don't enjoy the front 9 much but my dad really loved it. I really like the back 9 as it's not as man made and goes into the dunes. I'd recomend you have your son take you to Coronado in the morning and then play the back 9 on Sea-N-Air after. Mirimar is usually the best conditioned military course in the area. In my mind the best course in the SD area under $100 for non-locals is out at Barona Creek. Not a costal course and a bit of a drive but a fun time.
  11. Aside from the things mentioned I'll add two more potential reasons. People like the ocean and the cliff side golf offered at many courses in Ireland. Also a visitor is able to play nearly all the courses in the country. So playing the best courses is only a matter of paying for it...very different from the US where many of the nicest courses are not accesible for visitor play.
  12. In addition to those already mentioned a historic green no longer in existence because it was a bit to extreme is the 18th at Sitwell Park seen below.
  13. Anyone purchase the discounted golf equipment and apparel offered on cyber monday. I thought a wicking long sleeve ping shirt from Golfsmith was a pretty good deal at $17.
  14. NCR is still ranked 71 in the Golfweek top 100 classic courses in the US. The lists that are being posted on this site are open to input from anyone. That is to say a GM at one of the courses could give his/her course a perfect score and give really low scores to their competitors. More likely however I figure a person who typically plays average to below average courses plays a pretty nice course and ranks it with perfect scores because it is the best thing they have ever seen. While the major publication rankings (Golf Digest, Golf Magazine and Golf Wekk) have some flaws to them I trust them more than internet open source lists because the raters have seen a vast array of courses.
  15. To comment on the reply about Lost Canyons...I play it when they have $59 all day deals and get 2-3 rounds in. The afternoons there tend to get windy.
  16. To add some... 16 at Cypress Point 17 at St Andrews (Old) 4 at Fishers Island 16 at Bandon Dunes (the wind makes this hole so not sure the simulator will work that in) 10 at Riviera 13 at Augusta 7 at Pine Valley
  17. The golf link rankings are rediculous. If you look at the top 100 nationwide you'll see a Seattle Muni at 3 that doesn't make the top 3 in the Seattle area. There is a very obvious skew to public courses in large metro areas look at how many less than stellar So Cal public courses are in their top 100. http://www.golflink.com/top-golf-courses/
  18. I play most of my golf either at Rancho Park because it's close or drive up to Moorpark and play Rustic Canyon because in my opinion it's the best value I've found in an hour radius.
  19. I'm the same way with irons, and putters on ebay. My wife has now told me I have to get rid of 2 sets of irons the next time I buy a set. I have a few sets of pings and a few sets of clevelands. I have bought a few of the sets with project x shafs because the shafts were cheaper when buying them in a used set of clubs than buying the shafts new (I keep telling myself that I'm going to pull them eventually and put them on some new heads that I purchase but we'll see).
  20. I ride my motorcycle with my bag on my back occasionally. The bag I use is a normal stand bag with double straps. I've ridden with a sunday bag once before and it didn't work all that well. With the double strap I tighten the straps almost as tight as they go. The club side should be a little higher. I also put a bag on the top of the bag that I bungie to the point where I can turn my bag upside down and the clubs stay in the bag. The clubs just barely rest on the passenger seat and it works fine. I've ridden about 50 min on the highway with my clubs on my back before. I won't do that again as 70 mph for 30 min and my shoulders were killing me from the wind pushing the bag back. I told my wife I want the 2x2 settup for christmas.
  21. I have two pairs of golf shoes. Adadis Powerbands that I got free with my driver and FJ Contour Series Model 54108. I wore out the FJ Contour Series and was getting some pain in the arches from multiple rounds a day with the Adidas shoes. When I went to go purchase replacements for FJ's I fully intended to purchase the Trues or some of the Ecco street. When I tried the Trues on my feet felt like they were swiming and I didn't like the wide toe box looking down. I had the opposite experience with the Ecco street shoes. I felt like my foot was being squished. I ended up going with the another pair of FJ Contour Series Model 54108 (I don't like the other models of the Contour Series). Not sure I'll be able to get them next time I need a new pair as they are apparently discontinued.
  22. As stated the increased number of people in the group slows down the pace of play. Here in LA there are a few courses that send groups out in 5's instead of groups of 4. You can count on 5 hour rounds and likely encounter 6 hrs when sent out in groups of 5. I was looking at a trip to the UK and found that some clubs send groups of 2 off the tee in the am and the groups of 4 can play in the afternoon. I think 2 people is the ideal number.
  23. From the quote I'm not sure what exactly what is meant. If we are saying Erin Hills will be in a regular rotation for amateur championships I won't disagree. It's long, demanding and a great setup for amateur golf. If he is saying it is going to be known as a great site for US Opens after this year I'm not sure I agree. When I think of great sites for PGA majors I think of courses that produce great champions. I'm not sure Erin Hills and that style course will produce what viewers want in a champion...we'll see in 2017 though. I also thought it was funny how they talked about data from the amateur at Chambers Bay being invaluable for how it will be setup at the US Open...ie the explanation for changing the course. Gotta love how they change a course to meet the needs of one tournament and then because they host one tournament they can justify increased prices.
  24. So I'm heading out to Maui soon and some friends were telling me about da game that apparently rotates between Kapalua, Kaanapali and another course. They said that it starts about an hour before twilight and you pay a reduced rate and then pay $20 for a skins pot, a $2-$2-$4 Nassau game and then $10 for a hole-in-one pot. There is no handicap involved so I would guess there are some players and I wouldn't expect to win anything as I'm playing to about an 8 now but heard it is still cheaper than paying full rate. Was wondering if anyone on here has played or regularly plays and could verify what I've been told and if it is only for locals. I'm interested in playing a few days while I'm there for the week. I'll call the courses to see what all is involved but figured I'd ask here as well.
  25. Is it going to be much cooler in NM than Texas? I have heard the golf is great.
