Bogey Golfers Only (Index 16-22) / Breaking 90 Topic
teamroper60 replied to rkim291968's topic in Golf Talk
To answer the specifics of your question, at this stage of my game, I would rather hit it well because I know that once I can do that consistently, the scores will take care of themselves. But I would submit that our definitions of hitting the ball well are very different. To me, if shots are ending up in places that are not so good, then they are not good shots regardless of how well you struck them. Maybe you made good contact. Maybe you hit your preferred flight pattern, etc... But a well struck shot that goes 20 yards off line is still not a good shot. -
Well, since "That's a winner!" was Jack Buck's line and Harry went on to work or the cubs.. I think it's safe to say, most Cardinals fans will prefer Buck's line....
-
Ummmmm NO! This is St. Louis we are talking about. The correct phrase is: "That's a winner!"

I read an article about this a while back. Alabama was specifically noted as one of the worst offenders, IIRC, though it was noted to be occurring at a lot of schools and most of the SEC schools in particular. But I thought I read something earlier this year about an attempt to curb this practice... I am sure they should crack down on it. IMHO, once you give a kid a scholarship, you shouldn't be able to revoke it just because you found somebody you think is better.. You thought he was good enough in the first place, so live with the choice.

And that is likely to them from being "MICHIGAN!" again for a while. Hanging on to the past made Notre Dame almost irrelevant for a long time after Holtz. If Michigan isn't careful, they could end up just like them. BTW, @saevel25 , Hoke is in his 4th season, not third, so the majority of the team should be his by this point and he isn't winning with "his" players. He actually did better with Rich Rod's players than he is doing with his own. Your top 10 isn't too far off from what panned out with the new polls except OSU is 15th (wishful thinking?) and Alabama and Baylor are both ahead of MSU. ND looks good so far. It would not surprise me if they knock off FSU and find themselves in the hunt but they have some tough, rivalry type games yet to play. I agree the ACC looks really weak right now. The committee starts discussing this in another 3 weeks. It'll be real interesting to see how things play out by then.....

Watching Auburn make a mockery of LSU.. I think it is pretty safe to say Auburn, currently at #5 just catapulted themselves to #2. If I was Jimbo Fisher, I would start worrying. They haven't really looked good yet and with all these other upsets, it almost seems inevitable that FSU gets a loss too....

No kidding! What a weekend! #2, #3, #4 and #6 all go down in defeat and there are still games to be played. It'll be interesting to see what the polls look like Monday..

Can anyone recommend a good glove?
teamroper60 replied to CarlOwen's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I've been using the Footjoy GTxtreme this year. It has proved to be tacky enough for a nice relaxed grip and has been sturdy enough to last for several months, playing 5 days a week plus range time (previous gloves, including the FJ Weathersof, rarely last me more one month).. -
I think your Petty/Earnhardt analogy is a perfect example of why you can't compare people from different eras. Petty won 200 races using far inferior equipment (when compared to today) BUT.... there were more races on the schedule during his heyday. In one season, Petty won 10 straight and 27 total. Nowdays, there are only 30 something races on the whole schedule. Earnhardt won fewer races, while competing on a shorter schedule and in better equipment. Both raced against many opponents who either are, or will be, in the NASCAR HOF. So who really was better? The fact is, there is no correct answer. Never will be. The differences in their eras make it impossible to have a definitive answer. I personally believe Petty would have collected even more wins had he been able to use today's equipment in his heyday, but we will never know. The same applies here. Equipment improvements, schedule differences, hell, even changes to the way pros get from one tournament to the next, will all have played in to how many wins any particular player amassed. Like the statement above about Petty, with Hogan's success using what is by comparison inferior equipment, I believe he would have excelled with today's equipment. But again, we will never really know....

I thought about that too! What I really wonder is, just how badly they wish they hadn't run Carr out of the job in the first place. When RichRod was at Michigan, they scored a lot of points, but they couldn't stop anybody else from scoring. All he really needed was an upgrade at D-coordinator. Had he done that they would've been tough to handle in the B1G. His biggest problem was, he didnt energize their fan base. Honestly, Michigan seems to have gotten caught up in the same type of deal that Mizzou dealt with for years... Letting the alum have too much say in who the coach is. That drug Mizzou down for a lot of years in the Big 8/12 and it seems to be doing the same to Michigan in the B1G. Speaking of Mizzou.... Lose to a perrenial bottom feeder in a weak conference one week, then beat #13 in the country the next..... Wow! Pinkel sure knows how to keep fans on their toes! LOL I just hope that win was the start of another run and not just the years top highlight.. I have said all year I didn't think FSU was unbeatable and frankly, I am curious now to see how Winston would react to losing. He seems a little too immature to handle it well.... And yeah, my favorite play of the week was that OSU coach slamming the idiot. Damn I loved that!! I just hope he doesnt get sued over it..
-
Wow!! Indiana beats Mizzou! Good win for the B1G! Looks like they are having a pretty good day, other than Utah beating Michigan (at home, no less!). Not sure what that says about Mizzou but I am sure it isn't good. Watching Miss St. beat LSU at the moment and seeing that several top 25 teams are struggling with their opponents. Maybe this is one of those upset Saturdays.....

I agree with pretty much everything you said here. I know it would not seem it from some of my posts, but I like the B1G. Academically, I think you would be hard pressed to find a better collection of schools. I was really hoping Missouri would get into the B1G instead of the SEC. I think they were a better fit in that conference in every way. Sadly, the curators didn't seem to see it that way... I have always enjoyed watching the Michigan-OSU rivalry game, dating back to the "Ten year war". I kinda thought that game might get good again when Michigan hired Fred Flinstone (Hoke). He seemed like a good fit but it doesn't look so good now. In my mind, OSU, Michigan, PSU, Nebraska are all "traditional powers" in the same sense as Alabama, USC, Texas and Oklahoma. I wish they would get back to that level because I would like to see more parity among the conferences. I do believe they will get back to prominence at some point but not until they find a way to lure some of those good southern players north. Perhaps Urban can do that but I doubt he can on name recognition alone. There are some damn good coaches in the south (Saban, Miles, Spurrier, etc...) who are sucking up the top recruits year in and year out. If you are a school in the snow belt, it is pretty hard to compete with winning football, good weather, beaches and bikinis..

. Yes. That is going to be very tough but somehow I suspect at least one will. Even if they don't, that same perception that believes the B1G is weak, also percieves the SEC West as very strong. So two losses there (against other SEC West teams) is not as damaging.. I'm not saying this is right, but perception is reality and that IS the perception. Making predictions now may be "useless talking points" in the eyes of some, but IMHO believing the B1G has a real chance of putting a team in the playoff this year is pipedreaming.
-
Misread OSU's schedule there. Since that is the case, I would give the edge to MSU then. And while it is true that sometimes the best team doesn't win, it is also true that when the better team doesn't, it's stock goes down and it is equally true that the overall impression of that team is affected by the play of the teams they beat and the teams that beat them. So VT losing to a nobody is very bad for OSU. At this point, their loss to VT looks a lot worse than MSU's loss to Oregon. But I stand by my prediction that no team from the B1G makes the playoffs, regardless of their final record. Their on field performance against other conferences and the percieved weakness of the conference is going to hurt them badly.
-
I didn't discount ND. I just don't see them running through their schedule unscathed. And given the way the B1G has underperformed against other power 5 opponents, I really believe the second place team in the SEC or PAC 12 (with 2 losses) has a better shot at getting in than a one-loss B1G team. And no, I don't see a rematch against Oregon getting MSU any real consideration. Yes, having 4 spots instead of 2 does inherently increase the chances of a B1G team getting in due to doubling the number of teams but that is far from giving them an edge of any kind over any other one loss team (and some two loss teams). Honestly, I think humans making the picks does more to reduce the B1G's chances than having the computer element did. Human bias currently is strongly showing a belief the B1G is weak. On field performance is thus far bolstering that belief. About the only way I see the B1G having a rep in the playoff is if both the SEC and PAC 12 second place teams having more than 2 losses and MSU or OSU running the table from here out (which is more likely for OSU than MSU since they meet in Columbus this year) and VT losing today to E. Carolina makes that loss look pretty sorry.
-
Thus far, I haven't seen anybody really look unbeatable. Yes, Oregon looks good but beating Michigan St. doesn't look all that impressive when you consider the B1G is 1-9 so far this year against the power 5 conferences (3 losses to Big 12 teams today!). It will be interesting to see just how they look when they get into the meat of the PAC 12 schedule. South Carolina looked a lot more like the team everyone expected them to be today but then again, Georgia seems to struggle in Columbia, so who knows. I expect Mizzou to be no where near the top of the SEC East this year. They have a pretty tough schedule and the team doesn't seem as strong as last year. Watching Oklahoma right now. They look pretty damn good but then again, it is against Tennessee, so who knows.. As it stands right now, I will not be surprised if the 4 teams are made up of the SEC champ, PAC12 champ, Big 12 champ and the 4th being the 2nd place team in the SEC or PAC12 (whichever is higher ranked).. I feel pretty certain the B1G will not have a rep there, even if their champ is undefeated in conference.

Bogey Golfers Only (Index 16-22) / Breaking 90 Topic
teamroper60 replied to rkim291968's topic in Golf Talk
Don't get me wrong, I still work on swing mechanics. I just do it on the range. I have struggled with trying to analyze my swing while on the course and am certain that has had a profoundly negative affect on my scores. Now, I am focusing on the shot at hand, not on the mechanics of making that shot and not only has my score improved, but my accuracy seems to be better too. -
New Callaway Driver: Big Bertha V Series
teamroper60 replied to mvmac's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Hit a few shots with a BB V the other day at Golfsmith. Didn't care for it. Too light to suit my taste. I agree with @newtogolf Callaway is not helping themselves here. They need to look at what Taylormade is going through and learn from it, not mimick it. -
Yes, that was completely unacceptable. Frankly, the coach should be smacked for calling Haden down to begin with. Kinda like trying to get a bigger guy to fight your fight for you. Stupid. I know Haden has apologized but I'm not sure that is sufficient in this case..

Bogey Golfers Only (Index 16-22) / Breaking 90 Topic
teamroper60 replied to rkim291968's topic in Golf Talk
Been playing fairly well (for me) lately, mostly mid to high 80's. I even shot an 86 at a course I had never played before. Granted, I have a long way to go but this has been the most consistent I have been for a while, if ever. Ironically, what has been the biggest help has nothing to do with swing mechanics. It has been all mental. I started using LSW as a strategy guide and then focusing only on the target I want to hit with each shot. In fact, I have no swing thoughts at all before or during the shot. I just think about the target itself. While this hasn't stopped me from making a few bad shots, it has definitely improved the quality of my shots overall and for sure stopped me from trying analyze myself mid-swing and it has also stopped me from lingering on a bad shot as now, I am focusing on what my strategy is for the next one almost immediately. Maybe this is nothing new to everyone else. But anybody else is like I was and has the habit of thinking about your swing while trying to play, you might give this a try. It has really been helping me. -
OSU loses to unranked VT, Michigan gets blown out by ND and Michigan St. gets manhandled by Oregon, Nebraska barely gets by McNeese St. When the signature win for the conference this week is Winconsin thrashing Western Illinois, it's clear there isn't a team in the B1G that should be considered for the playoff this year. Frankly, the B1G has become one of Delaney's "little sisters of the poor" conferences. It's a joke that any of them are still in the top 25.

Do any of you that are using these lasers wear glasses? I wear glasses and the ones I have looked through don't seem to be all that great with glasses.. Are there adjustments possible?? -
True Linkswear proto shoes and effect on lie
teamroper60 replied to jmanbooyaa's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I agree. I recently bought a pair of Stealths and a pair of Protos. I like the wide toe box and comfort of both and while I think the Stealths are kinda goofy looking, I think the Protos look good. I have never been a fan of wingtips, even as an actual dress shoe, much less as a golf shoe and I don't like the other offerings True has kept in their lineup either. I sure hope they come out with some new models that are more in line with the Protos. -

Yes they have. I emailed True the other day and was informed the Protos, Stealths and Tours have all been discontinued.
