Slow Play on the PGA Tour, Tiger Shares His Opinion
chicagogolf replied to mvmac's topic in Tour Talk
The tough part about slow play are all the variables: lost balls, wind, many shots on a hole, etc. With all the technology we have, the PGA Tour could easily time each player individually. If you want to look forever for your ball, that could affect your pay check at the end of the tournament. The tour needs to create a STANDARD TIME MEASUREMENT. You go over that time, you pay for it, $1K per minute (2K, 10K, whatever). The younger kids will see this and think "if i want to be on tour, playing this slow will cost me money. better learn how to play faster." I hate having to speed up my own play because a guy in my group can't handle his shit. -
Tom Wishon on being fit for clubs
chicagogolf replied to glock35ipsc's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I think all this propaganda talk is pretty funny. what would you rather pay for: books that discuss the finer points of custom fitting and educate yourself or the right to watch the same commercials from taylormade over and over? because when you buy an OEM product, you are paying for the pointless ads you see on the golf channel. but when you buy a book, you are being educated. when you buy wishon clubs you are paying for a real golf education. no one says you have to buy tom wishon clubs, but its only natural for a man who has this knowledge to offer it for a price along with his own golf clubs. OEMs don't offer knowledge. they just tell you what tiger woods is playing and hope you buy it. -
trappists rochefort 10. done.

not all steel shafts come in 370 or 355. but usually when you don't have a choice you are getting the standard 355 unless you are ordering from a custom club operation that sells heads to fit only a 370 tip.

Tom Wishon on being fit for clubs
chicagogolf replied to glock35ipsc's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
those baby blades are EFFEN sweet -
There is no difference between national brands and components. All club heads pretty much come off the same assembly line. There are just a handful of places that produce them all. If anything, components (from reputable suppliers) are better because the iron hosels have 370 tips which allow for more customization in the shaft performance. I've played golfsmith components for years, and every time I switched to a national brand, I switched right back. Now I can't wait to get my WIshon clubs.

Tom Wishon on being fit for clubs
chicagogolf replied to glock35ipsc's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
seems like everyone here is referring to the length of the club when talking about custom clubs. although that's important, let's not forget the weight. i think that varies more like a show size than the length of clubs. -
What golf companies do you like to support, and why?
chicagogolf replied to Moonnerd's topic in Golf Talk
overall, I think most golf companies are ruining the game. it's all about money. the majority of game improvement should come from you not your equipment. use proper equipment, yes, but if you can buy 17 extra yards and your friend can buy 17 extra yards, what's the point? where does it end? what if everyone could drive the ball 400 yards? how fun or challenging would the game be then? all we are doing is running up the tab on ourselves. we are making ourselves pay more money when we don't have to. for the most part, we are pricing ourselves right out of the game. -

Can custom fitting hurt your game?
chicagogolf replied to chicagogolf's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
just from my personal experience growing up and playing golf. in high school, I was 5'11 and fitted into 1/2" over and 3 degrees upright. really, at that age you don't know any better, but looking back, there was an obvious swing flaw there that should have been corrected. -
I think it can. Example: If your driver swing speed is 95 and you get fitted into an R shaft but you want to hit the ball longer, how is an R shaft gonna help you? you might add 5 to 10 yards because you are hitting it straighter but the only way to really hit the ball longer is to increase your swing speed. If you want to swing the club 110 mph, you should play a shaft designed for 110 and force yourself to get there. i think custom fitting can help if you are 2 handicap trying to get to a 0 or +1. But if you are a 15 to 20 handicap trying to get in the single digits, my personal opinion is that custom fitting is just ingraining your bad swing habits. if you want to swing like ben hogan, but you currently have an upright swing, playing super upright clubs isn't going to help you. You have to get flatter clubs and force yourself into a better impact position. That's why I believe static fitting works best for high handicappers.

i wouldn't expect a $100 steel shaft to break so easily. I've never in my life had a problem with DGs or PX. Throw'em, Slam'em just the same and they didn't break. Before the surestix shafts, the only time a shaft broke in my hands was against a tree or over my knee. and don't tell me none of you have ever hit a ball in the water on a par 3, and then standing there, slammed the club into the ground out of frustration.... bottom line... if you get fitted with "flat line frequency" shafts meaning your shafts will operate on one frequency (ie 290), not a sliding scale like most shafts, get em checked a few months later. guarantee they are no longer that one number. this is not to be confused with frequency matched. if you have 6.0 PX shafts, your PW shaft is slightly stiffer than your 3-iron shaft. "flat line frequency" corrects this giving all clubs the same flex.

Are Golf Courses Too Long and Difficult? Lee Trevino Interview
chicagogolf replied to mvmac's topic in Golf Talk
i love this interview. I have been saying for years that equipment is taking this game in the wrong direction. watching a golf tournament is absolutely boring. watching tour guys play a 500 yard par 4 with driver 9 iron is a yawn. and all we are doing is making this game more expensive for us to play. it's stupid. Example, Player A was always 10 yards shorter than Player B. So Player A spends $700 on a new driver with the latest and greatest shaft. He picks up 25 yards. Now he is 15 yards longer than Player B. Now Player B responds by getting a new $300 shaft and adds 20 yards. He's back on top. Its so stupid. Then, as Lee said which I've always said, by making the courses longer all we are doing is driving up the greens fees when less than 1% of golfers use all that length. Soooo the majority are paying more to allow the few to play from over 7000 yards. IT's SOOOO FREAKING STUPID. Does anyone here understand what is happening? I want my game to improve with hard work, not with technology everyone can buy. In my opinion, the USGA has not protected this game. IT sold out long ago to the equipment companies. -
so just for clarification.... i go alone vs 3. there's 4 points on the table. i lose. so i lose 4 to each guy for a total of 12? so each guy but me is +4...

After getting screwed over by Surestix golf, I'm looking for a new set of clubs, the whole bag. I found KZG and Wishon. I like small companies. Does anyone here have an experience, good or bad, with either company?

In need of New Golf Shoes!
chicagogolf replied to GoldenBearCub's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
this is gonna sound strange, but skechers makes a pretty good golf shoe. $79. same quality as shoes over $100. I wear a size 10 1/2 in nike, but 11 in skechers. -
Two things that have always confused me: 1. I've always played where the WOLF tees off first but then I've heard some people play where the WOLF tees off last 2. I've never kept score, so how does that work? let's use an easy scenario: 1 point prox, 2 points low ball, 2 points low total, 1 point birdie. WOLF tees off first. first hole, WOLF chooses to go alone after seeing everyone's tee shot and gets rolled. WOLF gets prox and makes birdie giving him an umbrella with the roll plus the automatic double for going alone, 48 points. Now, how are the points awarded? WOLF gets 48 from each giving him 144 and each guy is negative 48? or WOLF gets just 48 (16 from each guy) and each guy is negative 16? what's the proper way to score it? And does your group have any special rules that you add to make it more interesting?

here are a couple mind tricks: 1. for the "range guy", picture a driving range when you are on the course. think about your favorite target on the range whether it be a flag, pole, yardage sign, hill, tree, whatever. There are no penalties on the range so you are free swinging. by narrowing your focus on the course and thinking about your favorite target from the range, you are setting your mind at ease but still staying in a target mind set. and/or 2. before you swing imagine you just hit the worst possible shot and now you are hitting "the practice" shot or the mulligan or a provisional. 9 out of 10 times you hit those better so put yourself in that mind set.

What golf companies do you like to support, and why?
chicagogolf replied to Moonnerd's topic in Golf Talk
I will never get a fitting from Surestix Golf in Oak Brook, Illinois. First time in my life I payed full price for golf equipment and I got ripped off in a bad way. Worst junk I've ever put in my bag. Lesson learned and back to my roots of sticking with local companies like Tour Edge (Exotics) or Wilson. I've always been treated right by those guys. I'm also becoming a big fan of Miura because of their "baby blades". They look sooooo nice. -
1. the guy that steps on the gas releasing the cart brake in the middle of my swing. 2. the guy that takes his glove off making the velcro sound when i'm putting. 3. the 2 guys that won't stop talking when i go into my pre-shot routine. then they say "you gonna hit?" as i'm standing behind my ball waiting for them to shut up. 4. the guy that doesn't get any pins. 5. the guy that tries to drop his ball after going in a lateral on the line of flight (there is no such thing) or where the ball splashed and not where it crossed. 6. the guy you don't know that wants to "play for something" and won't stop asking. 7. the guy that practice putts while a group is waiting behind him. 8. people that don't drop off their cart partner at their ball and drive the cart to their own ball.

there is a range fitting. they have nine 9 irons (each with a different frequency), nine 5 irons, and nine drivers. at some point, the frequency that feels best with the 9 iron will match the 5 iron and driver. You hit until you find the frequency that produces the desired ball flight. but there is no launch monitor. and i don't care what anyone's handicap is, good golfers will do anything within in the rules to get what they might think is an advantage. in regards to club champion, they do a standard fitting, not "flat line frequency" fitting. i'm sure club champion is great. but the one has nothing to do with the other. club champion will fit you with tapper tipped shafts. Surestix and "flat line frequency" uses parallel tipped shafts. do you know the difference? as far as breaking clubs, no one has ever hit a bad shot and slammed their club into the ground out of frustration? i can tell you after playing golf for 20 years, the last 10 using project x shafts, i have never broken a club from slamming it into the ground until i got these shafts. i've broken clubs over my knee and against trees but never from slamming it into the ground. so far out of this set, 2 shafts have bent. Listen...I'm just offering a word of caution about these shafts and this fitting. this company says all your shafts will operate with the same frequency. mine do not and i'm having a heck of a time trying to get my money back.
-
They will rip you off with their cheap shafts and "flat line frequency" fitting. It's not worth the money. I did the fitting and bought into the "technology". The "technology" is making it so all the shafts from Driver to PW flex the same. You might say to yourself, "this is stupid. of course all my clubs flex the same. They're all S300s or 6.0". Not true. The PW shaft is stiffer than the 4-iron shaft after you are done butt trimming it. But "flat line frequency" technology makes it so all the shafts flex the same. It's not worth the price of admission...trust me. Your game will not improve enough to justify paying $1800 for new shafts. And they won't tell you who makes the shaft because the shafts are of very poor quality. If you take the grip off the graphite shafts, you will see they are made in Korea. The steel shafts they use brake very easily, so if you have a temper and like to slam clubs after a bad shot, be prepared to spend spend spend. They don't use launch monitors so you can't see if you are actually hitting the ball better. It's based totally on feel. Lastly, I had the frequencies independently checked and none of them matched. Every club is supposed to have the same CPM number, but mine don't. Stay away!
