  1. I bought some rain pants and rain gloves. They came in pretty handy. Now I just need to find a rain jacket as my current windbreaker is not waterproof. I don't play in rain that often, but when I do, I'd really like to stay dry!
  2. I don't know if it is anything more than a superstition at this point, but lately I've been drinking a Red Bull before my round (we tee off about 7 AM) and I've been playing well. I'm sure I'll continue to do so until things change, and then I'll find something else that gives me "good luck".
  3. Shot a career low today, 70 (2 under). I left 2 birdies on the lip of the cup and lipped out another, or it could have been one for the ages for me. Oh well, at least this way I have something I can try to beat. Had I posted a 67 or something, I'm not sure I could have ever beat it. Next goal to accomplish: get into the 60's. I had it 3 under with 3 to go, but bogied one of the toughest holes down the stretch.
  4. I've now played 3 rounds with the new TP5's and I have to say I'm quite impressed. They seem to be noticeably longer off the tee than what I was playing before (Nike Tour One) and also longer than the original Penta TP. It's been a while since I've played the Pro V and Pro V1, so I don't have that to compare to. If anyone is wanting a premium ball at a non-premium price, and you can still find the buy 2 get 1 free deal, I'd definitely recommed the TP5. For an average of $30/dozen, I don't think you're going to find anything that can compete with them.
  5. So, some of the guys I play poker with at the casino have a lot of gamble in them (along with some big bank rolls). One of them in particular can't do much of anything without gambling. They like to golf, and I hear stories about them betting $500/side and $10 skins. Part of me wants to get in on it, but the other part of me wonders how much playing for those kind of stakes would affect my game. I'm sure it would affect me a lot more than them. My handicap fluctuates between 2.5 and 4, so I'm no pro, but from what I've heard around the poker table I'm better than they are. How do you go about determining how many strokes to give/get when you've never played with anyone before? It's not like they have a GHIN handicap (even if they did, I'm not sure I'd trust it). Not something that I'm going to run out and do tomorrow, but it definitely has peaked my interest...
  6. $350 or so to play Whistling Straits - Straits course. The course was immaculate, and had a great time. Pete Dye is one cruel designer though. You miss in the wrong spot and you will pay for it.
  7. You can get the TP5's for about $30/dozen right now. They are buy 2 dozen get 1 free. I just bought 3 dozen off Amazon for just under $90 shipped to the door.
  8. It's close, but I'll say layout. Course conditions is a very close second. I don't care how well groomed the course is, if every hole is right next to the previous one and straght, I'm going to be bored with it.
  9. Best public course in Iowa - http://www.harvestergolf.com
  10. Mizuno for their irons. No one makes a prettier iron and I love the performance as well.
  11. My Dad started golfing when he was 35 (I was 5), and I used to walk along with him when he played. I'd go look for balls occasionally, and he had made a fold down seat for his pull cart that folded down onto the wheel for me to sit on when it was in between shots. Around 8 or so, he'd pack a club or two for me in his bag and let me hit a few times on the course. By 10, I was playing normal rounds. Once I turned 16 or so, I don't think he has ever beat me since. :)
  12. Slow play is my biggest pet peeve and it isn't even close. You don't have to be a good golfer to play at a decent pace. Know how far you hit the ball, and hit once the other group is out of range. If you lose a ball, spend a reasonable amount of time looking for it, but if you can't find it quickly, just drop another ball and go.
  13. I've shot 1 under par on 18 holes 3 times in my life. I have dreams of someday getting in the 60's, but for now 71, will have to do.
  14. I live in the northern midwest. A buddy and I decided to drive south in February until we could find somewhere that was warm enough to play and ended up in Oklahoma. We don't normally drink while we play, but the beer was dirt cheap, so we decided to partake in some beverages. Somewhere around the 15th hole and too many beers we were both in the fairway abbout 150 yds out. He asks if I want to go closest to the pin for $5, and of course I accept. He hits it to about 6 feet. I get up there and hole it! It's a good thing because when I drink and golf I can still hit the full shots, but my short game and putting are horrible.
