Sloooooow takeaway fixed my driving
Jeffrey71 replied to sixonezero's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I do the same thing on the take away. I have also been trying to focus max acceleration at the moment of impact. Smooth, not hard, but fast. I like to hear the "woosh". -
So, I reposted my score this morning, and the little red note came up again. I went ahead with the posting. The score that was post was a combined score of 82, a 45 from a 9 hole round I played 2 months ago and the 37 I shot yesterday. The reason for the little red warning was because I've never shot as low as a 37!!!! LOL Yea me....and yes I did shoot a 37 ( 2 over par) best round of my life so far. So the moral of this story is all is well in GHIN land I've been practicing the 65/25/10 practice ratio for a little over a week and I've been working on ball striking for a while, plus alignment. I guess it's all starting to pay off.

REALLY!! That's on the higher end of the PGA Tour swing speeds.

Has anyone else ever had issues posting scores at the GHIN website? Usually whenever I post a score it will immediatly show under the recent scores. Recently, today included, I've had issues with the score posting. About 2 months ago I tried to post and I didn't think it went trough so I tried again. Still, no show that it posted, so I tried a third time and a red note came up saying "this score is not in your usual scoring range. post score anyway?" I disregarded the warning and went ahead and hit "post" and a 132 for 9 holes came up. Needless to say I had a sickly feeling of what this would do to my handicap. I got in touch with my local golf association guy who manages this stuff, he corrected it and I posted the correct score and it showed up. Today, I tried to post a score - same thing is happening. I did not however post the score when it asked if I wanted to post a score outside my usual range. The score for todays round doesn't even show.

what is the value of keeping your own stats?
Jeffrey71 replied to zcapozzi's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I don't see much value in it for me other than to keep my mind on things like fairways hit off tee, Greens in Regulation, Up and Downs, putts, and penalty strokes. -
Walked 9 today. Overcast, humid but cool, and a little drizzle. Shot a 37 on a par 35. Best 9 holes ever.....yea me!

The weather is just now in the 80's here. January and February are probably what I'd call the "off season".

High handicapper thoughts on improvement
Jeffrey71 replied to deekay's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
There is an article on here about 65/25/10 practice ratios I think you would enjoy. As for myself, the thing I strive to do most while playing is hit the fairway off the tee. I still struggle with this, but I'm getting better. After getting in the fairway, I tell myself, " just hit the green". I'm at the point where I don't care where on the green I hit, as long as I'm on the dance floor. Some holes are better than others. -
I know the basic rules and follow them, even when playing by myself. If I run into a questionable situation and move my ball, I go ahead and mark a penalty stroke, then, before I log my score into GHIN online, I consult the USGA rules/decisions site. I've actually waited 2 days for an e-mail on a ruling from the USGA before logging my score in.

I found out that I need some real practice with the low run shot. I've gotten too accustomed to a high, soft wedge to the green. I'm gonna start practicing a low punch n run with my 7 and 8 at about 100 yards....

I realize this thread hasn't been used in a while, but I'm gonna say this anyway: I played in my first "stroke" play tournament since I was a teenager(25 years) this past weekend. Where I live hasn't seen rain for 2 weeks, and last week the temp topped 100 for at least 5 days. Needless to say the course condition was very, very dry and hard; little to no grass in areas and the fairways where like concrete covered with that fake grass stuff you would see on patios. I'm not well rounded enough in my game to be accustomed to playing on these types of conditions and it really deflated me. In the 2 weeks prior to the tournament I shot an 86 and a 90. During the 2 day, 36 hole tournament I shot a 93 and a 97. I'll admit playing with guys I'd never met before; very slow pace; and a tournament setting, affected me mentally. I think what affected me most (mentally) was how my shots reacted on such tight, hard pan lies. Plus, some really bad bounces when the ball landed and people scuffing their feet across the greens. Finally, the first day the wind was 20-25 mph, so at times you would have to club up 2 clubs. I talked with some guys I knew and their scores suffered as well. Guys that normally shoot in the mid to high 70's scoring in the low 90's. I'm really glad for the experience, and it makes me want to become more well rounded. On a good note, out of 36 holes I only had 2 penalty strokes and lost only 1 ball, which is great for me.

Played in my first "stroke" play tournament this weekend since I was a teenager. 36 holes total over 2 days. I was NOT happy with my game, or lack of it. I shot a 93 on Saturday and a 97 today. The course was in horrible shape. It was like hitting off concrete covered with that fake grass stuff. Ball striking was extremely challenging. I talked with several others, and they said the same thing. One guy I know shot a 71 in a tournament at a different, better maintained course, a month ago; he didn't break 90 at this tournament. I did win $42 for a birdie. Only had 1 birdie for both days, mostly bogeys, doubles, triples, and even a quad. On a good note, I only had 2 penalty strokes and lost only 1 ball. I don't want it to sound like I'm making excuses, or placing blame for bad play, but the condition of the course WAS HORRIBLE. I really do feel that had quite a bit to do with my crappy score.

Welcome. You'll enjoy the site. There's a lot of great info here.

My hat's off to the pros who have to deal with the yelling week in and week out. I played with a guy for nine holes, who, after every shot; mine, his, or the other guy in the group; would belch out a comment of some sort. He wouldn't even wait to see the outcome of a shot. Sometimes he would have 2 or 3 comments blurted out before the ball even stopped rolling. It got really nerve racking to say the least.

Back in July Eric talked about 65/25/10. In the last 10, 18 hole rounds I've seen how much pressure I put on my short game by not being able to hit fairways and GIR consistently. I am going to give the 65/25/10 a good effort with the goal of more consistent fairways and GIR. Yes, through a lot of short game practice, I've gone from scoring 95-100 consistently to 86 -90 consistently. I want to find a good balance. I'm starting to see that better scores don't start anywhere, they are a result of......proper and effective practice.

What ball(s) is in your bag?
Jeffrey71 replied to CentralFC's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Don't remember if I said this before, but a friend of mine told me that a pawn shop in town gets balls from a guy (retired) who lives beside a golf course. This guy with walk his dog everyday on the course( yes, picking up the poop) for exercise. While doing that he picks up balls he finds and sells them to the pawn shop, who cleans them and sells them - $15 dz for ProV, Penta, etc., $7 NXT, $5 Noodles and such. I thought I'd give it a try so I bought a dozen NXT for $7. They hit just fine. So far I've bought 2 dozen and had 1 ball that was "dead". Of course I get to play in my first real stroke play tournament (36 holes flighted by handicap) next weekend so I bought a dozen NEW NXT Tour. Balls are too expensive, and my game needs to come together a lot more before I by new balls all the time. I'm still in the phase of loosing 1 or 2 almost every time I play. Hopefully I won't loose any during the tournament. I'm gonna bring some of the cheapies in case I do. -
65/20/15 Practice Ratios: Where to Devote Your Practice Time
Jeffrey71 replied to iacas's topic in Swing Thoughts
When I first read this article what it said went against everything I was taught when I first picked up a club which was, "putting is where the score is made" and "short game is where it's at", or something relative to these statements. Since the initial posting of this article I've played 10, 18 hole rounds. Looking back on them I see 1 glaring detail; I rely WAY too much on my short game (100yds and in, especially around the green) To be really honest, my ratios have been 90% short game and 10% full swing (9 iron - driver). I've always had a sort of knack for putting, my down fall with putting is that I get quick and misread the green. The last 3 - 4 rounds I've come to the revelation that the 65/25/10 is what I need. I get too "worn out" when I have to put all the pressure of a hole on 1 facet (short game). Starting today I'm gonna start the 65/25/10 practice routine. I'm a believer...... -
What ball(s) is in your bag?
Jeffrey71 replied to CentralFC's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
I've gone to using Titleist NXT tour. I've tried the "extreme" and the "S'. I prefer the extreme. -
Played my home course again - Hugo Golf Club par 70 69.4/ 117. Shot a 90 today. My head just wasn't into it. I need to get to the driving range. I can really tell I need to work with my irons (9-3). My putter is feeling pretty good and my tee shots are coming around. On this course I only use my driver 6 times the first hole is a dog leg left so a 3 wood is fine for placement off the tee. I wanted to practice last night, but a big rain storm came in. I'll definitely practice tonight. I really didn't "feel" my short game around the greens today; I felt timid to hit the ball. I am glad that I am starting to get accustomed to scoring in the 80's. I scored 86 yesterday. I'll keep pluggin' away at this wonderful game.....

All I know is practice helps me... I practice the "green to tee" theory. I'll set a target at 15, 30, 50, and so on. Some days a 50 or 60 yard shot feels better than a 15 or 20 yard shot. I can't get to the driving range but once a week, so I try to make my practicing very purposefull by using alignment sticks (mine are hard plastic garden stakes from wal-mart $ .88 a piece) and only focusing on 1 or 2 other things like ball striking and follow through. If I try to focus on too many things at once, it seems counter productive. Right now, for me, anything within 120 yards is more "feel" than anything else. From 130 and up is more about ball striking.

Tell the girl what you want as far as golf. If she really cares about you she'll understand and be supportive. If she doesn't understand and thinks that everything is about her and you should feel that way too, well dump her.
-
This is where I'm at. I get worn out mentally spending most of my time scrambling for par or bogey. Spending the time to figure out how to get more GIR would reduce the dreaded double and triple bogeys.
