Ping Tour S59 irons
Backspin replied to Newbie Collection Agency's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
The S59's knocked Mizuno's MP-32's out of my bag. I can play any shot with them but the Ping's save me an extra shot or two a round, due to the forgiveness. I have the zz65 shaft and didn't really notice a flight difference over the DGS300's, I'm sure the similar flight is because of the head/shaft combo of the two irons. If were to put a different shaft in I would think the ball flight would be too low. All in all the S59's suit my game perfectly. -
Valid Complaint or Whining? Westwood on Weekley...
Backspin replied to EquipmentJunkie's topic in Tour Talk
I agree with Westwood but I would have kept it to myself. If the Euro's were stomping the U.S. team, he probably would have. I think the Euro's are sore losers...unfortunatley. -
I normally hit my 7-iron 165 yards. With the Natural Golf swing I hit it about 145 yards. A very straight ball flight but very high (this is where I lost yardage). The problem was ballooning shots and this caused erratic yardages. But the accuracy was deadly, never more than 5 yards off-line. If there was a way to get my normal yardages I would play with this swing, but there isn't (unless I wanted to lengthen my shaft quite a bit). It's a very easy swing and puts no stress on your back. After about 10 swings it felt natural (no pun intended). Maybe getting the clubheads delofted would do the trick. Anyhow, I'll stay conventional.

This will sound bad...but...if the group ahead is really slow, as in ignorant of ettiquette, I hit into them. If they are older, slower people I deal with it but if they gather at every ball and talk away I let them have it. If a playing partner is slow I simply show him the group behind us that is waiting. They usually catch on and speed up.

Question for Minnesota Golfers
Backspin replied to The Wilderness's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
My bad spelling, it's Gerald McCullagh. Search him now, sorry... -
I tried the swing for a bit a few years back. More accurate but I had inconsistent distances. Too high of a ball flight for my liking.

How much do you want to spend? Gerald McCullugh is awesome but a bit spendy. -
How To Drive The Ball Farther
Backspin replied to michael123's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I'm a former competitive bodybuilder and powerlifter. Strength means very little, trust me. You want no tension. I try to feel like I'm letting go of the club at impact. The trick is flexibilty and timing. Core strength helps a little and forearm strength helps a little out of the rough but it's not where your power is at. It takes a while to learn, I was benching 500+lbs and hitting the driver 200 yards. Once I quit competitive lifting and worked on stretching (I still train, but not as heavy), I gained yardage. I'm about 280 with 300 there if I go after it. It was quite embarassing weighing 240lbs, wearing XXL shirts and getting outdriven by a skinnny, 50 year-old man...:) -
I'd go with Sergio's swing. Great with the woods and irons. I love to watch Ernie and Freddie, but give me Garcia's swing.

It isn't really a different topic. It's the value of people in our society. Being black and popular to most races is not unique. The athlete is overrated and Tiger is King of the hill, so therefore overrated. I give no credit to someone who crosses barriers when the result of said crossing is wealth and fame. Big deal. He is an icon and that is a problem. We have undeserving (overrated) icons. It reflects poorly on society to value a golfer over, say, a soldier. Everyone reading this will say "I hold soldiers in higher regard than a golfer". Good words but I'll bet the actions say otherwise (as in where your money goes, etc). Lots of reasons for that...but...our media sells us Tiger Woods. That's too bad. Yeah, yeah, I know I'm looking to deep into the meaning of this thread. Sorry :)

The whole draft is sooooo rigged. Chicago with less than a 2% chance gets the #1 pick...sure...
-
I shot my dog today. Actually I shot 78, not that great but considering I triple-bogeyed the first hole to lose a skin to a 30 handicap, I'll take it.
-
Bad holes aren't all bad, at least you remember them forever...:)
-
The very fact that a golfer is held in higher regard than your typical firefighter proves my point. The racial barriers were crossed long ago by Sifford, etc, so I don't give him anything on that point. The man is a golfer, next to meaningless in the big picture. Not that they aren't deserving of some recognition but it gets a bit overboard with Tiger. The game itself dwarfs the player.
-
He is still over-hyped and this is the reason some of the guys that deserve a bit more coverage don't get it. They spend way too much time on one guy. I know he's done a lot for the game, don't get me wrong. I just think the media goes overboard with him. I love it when he doesn't play because I get a chance to see some other swings on TV.
-
I think Tiger is over-hyped. I agree he is the greatest of his generation and may one day be the greatest ever, but he's still over-hyped. Tiger this, Tiger that, 24 hours a day in the golf world, 23 hours a day everywhere else. No one is worth that hype.
-
Why all the hype about Tiger? He's 6'1", 185 lbs...big deal. No one has seen him run a 4.4 40 or beat someone off a dribble and dunk on him. Where is this coming from??? He's a golfer with unreal flexibility and above average 'golfer' strength. What gives?
-
Need to see your swing. Probably overswinging...
-
Yes, hitting off the toe does help. Either way you pick a line and a pace and just give it a try. People make way too much of this game...
-
If you mean overrated as in media hype then I would say all American golfers are overrated. I think the numbers are what they are and the golfers are as good as their numbers.

Duval has to lose 20+ lbs, he looks to be laboring to me.

Golf #51 on ESPN's List of Hardest Sports
Backspin replied to twotacosfor99cents's topic in Golf Talk
I don't regard golf as a 'sport', I see it as a hybrid. Somewhere between a sport and a game/skill. The reason it is so hard is that it's counter-intuitive. Once you realize that, it becomes MUCH easier. -
A mistake many make is basing the yardage's off the hole length. If you have 400 yard hole and have 100 left after your drive, that doesn't always mean you hit a 300 yard drive. The tee boxes are not always at the exact yardage and the angle of the fairway comes into play. Many times I've had that scenario then lasered to the tee box and was 280 instead of 300.
-
I switch between the Tommy Armour SS Cavity backs and the Mizuno MP-32's. It's all in the shaft, anyhow. I need a Rifle 6.0's and I think most decent clubheads do the trick.
-
400 yards on a runway, maybe. Averaging 350 can be done. I have a friend who is a 16 handicap and hits 2-3 350 yard drives a round...but swinging that hard brings in alot of errant shots which brings the average way down. The few guys I know who hit it that far deloft their driver quite a bit and hit a rocket draw that runs forever. That kind of swing gets them in trouble more than not and their scores haven't improved over the last few years. Up here in Minnesota there are alot of hockey players with insane swing speed. I'm 275 off the tee, they are 300+. I par, they bogey...:) Swing at 80% people...
