Reaching Out to Our English Members as in England
sabram replied to FLOG4's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
Doug - I'm not an Englishman, but I made a couple of trips there while my son was in school in London. You can't go wrong playing the Heathland courses in Surrey and Berkshire near London. There are enough world calss courses in that small area to keep you happy for more than a week. Some great 36 hole days are as follow: Sunningdale Old and New Walton Heath Old and New St George's Hill (Red & Blue 9's) and New Zealand Woking and Worplesdon Berkshire Red and Berkshire Blue Wentworth West and East are overpriced and would be lower on my list Other good choices are Hankley Common and Hindhead which are a little further south. It is also worth a day to make a side trip to the East Coast of Kent and play Sandwich (Royal St Georges) and Deal (Royal Cinque Ports) That's 16 of the best courses in England without going very far. P.S. My photo on this site was taken at #9 at the top of St George's Hill. Check out the club house in the background. http://golfcourses.weebly.com/berkshire-and-surrey-england.html -
Thanks guys for the nice comments about the Bandon trip reoport. I've been living in a hotel since last Saturday. Electricity just came back on this morning following our big storm. It's the end of the golf season in the Northeast. I've just put up a poster sized print of Old Mac #14 on my office wall... that and the memories of the Bandon trip will get me through the winter (at least until my Florida trip).

Planning a golf trip to Myrtle Beach....
sabram replied to Dr_Fu_Manchu's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
I think March is a great time to go to MB for golf, especially if you are from north of their and it's still too cold to play at home. The weather is better in April and May, but the courses are less crowded in March. In March you can have a morning frost delay once in a while, but the temps are uslyy in theb 40's at dawn and hit the mid 60's at noon. Perfect golf weather. Prime season (and highest green fees usually begins the day after we move the clocks ahead, so I often go the week before that (first 10 days of March). You can get better values in Summer and Winter, but the Summer is very hot and humid and MB is crowded with beach-goers. Not the best time for golf unless you play very early in the morning. Winter can get pretty chilly in MB but golf is at bargain prices. -
Planning a golf trip to Myrtle Beach....
sabram replied to Dr_Fu_Manchu's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
The Legends Resort in MB is a great place to saty during a MB golf trip. There are three courses on site at the Legends Resort: Heathland, Moorland and Parkland. I would not put them in my top 5 MB courses, but definitely in the top 20 (out of 100 courses there). They are a great value as the green fees are lower than the other top MB courses. My favorite of the three is Moorland, followed closely by Heathland. Moorland is a PB Dye course and has a lot of interesting features. It's not a course for high handoica[ppers, but fine for mid and low cappers. Heathland is Tom Doak course and is the easist of the three. Legends also operates two very good courses not on site. Heritage is a beautiful "Low Countryt" style layout abourt 30 minutes to the south and Oyster Bay is a fun Marshland course locaated about 30 minutes to the North. All 5 courses are worth playing and you can get great packages with low prices for lodging, accomodations, breakfast and lunch. The condos at legends are nice, spacious and clean but not luxurious. They have a huge practice area on site that is lit at night. They also have a pub oin site which has decent food and friendly ambiance. The only negative about Legends is that becayuse they have such good deals the courses are croded during peak season and have slow pace of play sometimes making it difficult to get in 36 holes a day. I'd suggest either calling legenbds directly or booking a pacjkage through Brian Noblin at Myrtle Beach Golf Desk. You can find Brian's site on line. He is reputable, provides great service and prices. I was at Bandon earlier this month. Here's a link to report and photo tour of the courses. (Scroll down on the linked page if you want to skip staright to the photos) http://golfcourses.weebly.com/bandon-dunes-resort-bandon-oregon.html

The 5th course is a par three (12 holes I believe). It looks complete vand the grass is in. You can see it from the first tee at Bandon Trails. It lies between there and the Bandon Dunes course. My caddie said it is set to open in the spring of 2012. There are also plans for another full size course south of the original course. It is being designed by Gil Hanse and is in the process of obtaining permits.

St. Andrews- The Old Course, Singles
sabram replied to jimmmithing's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
Gullane and North Berwick are a bit of a drive from St Andrews. If you are looking to play some great links at a lower price than Kingsbarns or Carnoustie, and close to St Andrews, I'd suggest the following: Crail-Balcomie course, Elie, Lundin or Leven. I'd suggest calling these courses as soon as you determine that you'll not be playing St Andrews rather than just turning up at the course. -
I'll be there staring a week from tomorrow. I'll post a report when I return

Caesarea Golf Club in Israel is a nice Pete Dye layout. It is also close to some ancient Roman ruins on the Mediterranean Sea just about a mile from the course. Here's a link to photos of the course I took when I played there last month. http://sports.webshots.com/album/580665512tYeMAE There is a young player on the Duke women's golf team named Letitia Beck who grew up playing at Caesarea. I see that she played as an amatuer in last week's LPGA event. There is also a nine hole course in Israel called Gash. There are also courses in Dubai, United Arab Emirates and Abu Dhabi that the Eurpoean tour play at that would be good choices.

2,200 photos of Ireland's courses
sabram replied to kmarkham's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
That's a bummer. I back mine up on a second drive and copy them all on to disc as well. I'm jealous of all the great Irish courses you've played. I hope to make my first trip to Ireland in 2013 or 14. Probably the Southwest... Ballybunion, Lahinch, Waterville, Tralee, Dooks, Old Head etc Until then I can view the photos. I'm off to our own true links, Bandon Dunes, next week. Can't wait -
Do you know where you'll be staying? It is about 75 miles between Carolina National and caledonia with about 95 courses in between, all considered "Myrtle Beach" area courses. I can make better recommendations if I know which area you are staying in, any budget limitations, what criteria you prefer in choosing a course, such as how important is scenerey and the "wow" factor, how important is architectuarl values and shot values, do you want a long or tough course or are you a high handicapper that wants to avoid forced carries. If money is no object my top choices would be: Caledonia or True Blue at the south end (two very different style courses even though both designed by MIke Srantz) The Dunes Club, Barefoot Dye, Love or Fazio or Grande Dunes in the center Tigers Eye or Leopards Chase in the north end If you are looking to save a few bucks but still want a quality course I'd suggest the following: Heritage or Willbrook in the South Legends Moorland, Legends Heathland, Wild Wing, the Witch or Prestwick in the center Oyster Bay, Rivers Edge, Thistle or Carolina National in the north Here's a link to a list with links to photos & more info: http://golfcourses.weebly.com/myrtle-beach--the-grand-strand.html

There are three 18 hole courses in Croatia. The conseneus is that Dolina Kardinalla is the best of the three. Here is a link to a short article about golf in Croatia http://www.top100golfcourses.co.uk/htmlsite/country.asp?id=28 I don't know who told you there are no 18 hole courses in Poland. There are a few. http://www.top100golfcourses.co.uk/htmlsite/country.asp?id=52

Capitol Hill in Pratville (near Montgomery has three good courses and on site lodging. It is a good place to use as your base. If you have time, take a day at Cambrian Ridge which is about 45 minutes south of Capitol Hill. We flew to Atlanta and drove, so Grand National is on the way between Capitol Hill and Atlanta. The two courses at Grand national are called Links and Lakes, but Links is not a links style course. Here are links to photos of these RTJ courses. http://sports.webshots.com/album/557665669eDiLBF - Capitol Hill http://sports.webshots.com/album/557662235zkQzhw - Grand National and Cambrian Ridge

The Phoenecian is an amzing resort. One of the best places I've stayed at anywhere. However, the golf course, while okay is not one of the top courses in the area.

Kierland and Camelback would not make my top 20 Phoenix/Scottsdale area courses. We-Ko-Pa would be at the top of my list. Both courses there are excellent. Here is a link to my favorite Scottsdale area courses with photos. http://golfcourses.weebly.com/phoenix-az.html

I've played all of the courses mentioned on this thread several times. TPC is nice but not in my top five favorites. I'm suprised by the negative comments about Oyster Bay, Tigers Eye and the Legends courses. My only complaint about the Legends is the slow pace of play beacuse they are crowded. But I think the layouts are terrfific, particularly the Moorland and Heathland courses. If you are already set to play at Barefoot, I would suggest you play all of your rounds there. The Fazio, Love and Dye courses are all worth playing. The Dye is under appreciated IMO. If you are looking to play elsewhere, I highly recommend the Dunes Club. Prestwick is also worth playing. It has a wide variety of holes. A nice set of courses close to Barefoot that has not been mentioned are the two courses at Grande Dunes. Here are links to photos of the courses mentioned in this thread: http://sports.webshots.com/album/579929091bMBhQR - The Dunes Club http://sports.webshots.com/album/579929363toaSyb - Barefoot Dye http://sports.webshots.com/album/579936865HFFysQ TPC of MB http://sports.webshots.com/album/579932561zdfHun - Heritage http://sports.webshots.com/album/576993989KVzOhh - Grande Dunes (Memebrs and Resort Courses) http://sports.webshots.com/album/569810167XSKWDw - Prestwick http://sports.webshots.com/album/570513900QVSgqT?start=24 -Barefoot Fazio http://sports.webshots.com/album/570513900QVSgqT?start=84 - Legends Moorland & Heathland http://sports.webshots.com/album/562767212CyJfgZ - Barefoot Love, Oyster Bay, Tigers Eye, Leopards Chase http://sports.webshots.com/album/577006994exOuRE - Tidewater

Unique and rewarding way to get on at Ballyneal
sabram replied to tri-golf's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
Ballyneal is other-worldly and worth the trip from anywhere. I've played 600 courses and BN is in my top ten. Here's a link to photos, although the photos do not do justice to the experience. http://sports.webshots.com/album/578350365ejhJvm -
1 - Cost 2 - Pace of Play 3 - Greens in good condition If you are affiliated with the Deltona Club, you need do nothing except publicize the course and perhaps enforce fast pace of play. I love that course (since the Bobby Weed renovation). Great layout and fairly priced. There are a lot of good golf courses surrounding Orlando and Deltona is one of the best even though most people don't know about it. Pound Ridge Golf Course - Pound Ridge, NY
sabram replied to Gioguy21's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
Pound Ridge is a pretty and inetesrting course. It is on a small piece of property so the holes are squeezed in and the some of the fairways are pretty tight. You will need to be straight off the tee. The land is rolling and scenic. It is a good, but not great course. Bethpage is a better option if you are visiting the NY metro area . However, there are not many public options in the Westchester/Fairfield area so it is a good choice by default. It is expensive. Here is a link to photos of Pound Ridge from a round I played last fall. http://sports.webshots.com/album/578848566MgVIkV -
