To me what is meant by low and slow is the first 12 to 18 inches and the low part is for keeping your arms extended. It's not even a swing thought for me anymore. I take it back slow at the beginning to get my clubhead going back down the target line (the low part) so I can drop it down into the correct slot for me to hit it straight with a touch of draw.

I started playing golf when I was 34. I played a handful of times that year and got hooked. The next year I had my own clubs, Ram Lasers. Now I am 67 with an 8 hdcp. That said, in 2022 I figured out something that I was missing and have lost something I had. I can now hit straight drives in the fairway. I was always a fighter of the slice. Those days are finally over thanks to a better take-away and better swing path which I have "perfected" over the last 2 years. The thing I lost was my iron play. I lost a little youthful strength and about a half club of distance with my irons which I was never that long with, but I used to be more accurate. The problem seems to be the shafts in my irons are too stiff for me now. I can still play them but it's just not the same so, I'm looking to make a change. After 22 years with my beloved Callaway X-14 irons I'm jumping over to the Ping i230. I love the look and the feel. I bought a 6 iron only to start, with my specs with a 90-gram Elevate95MPH shaft in stiff flex that is much softer and about 10 grams lighter than the constant weight shafts in my X-14s. This shaft feels so unstable when hitting a ball but when I look up the ball is going straighter, higher, and longer than the Callaway's which you would think would seal the deal right? It's really hard to say goodbye to these Callaway's. Over the years I have bought 3 other sets of irons and got rid of them after 2 months. I don't want to do that with these Ping irons. With my newfound driving skills, you would think I wouldn't hesitate. I think I'm going to try the Modus3 shafts first but I'm going to get these irons and I'm going to get my hdcp down under a 5 and I'm going to shoot my age this year. That's the plan. Wish me luck.

Senior golfer here. I tried graphite and did not like the lack of control. I'm guessing you need to get really high-end graphite to get better control. I have tried and recommend the True Temper Elevate 95 shafts. They are steel but do not hurt your joints. Last year's model had inserts but this year's model have no insert and are said to be vibration free like the previous model.

What "Long Clubs" Do You Have in Your Bag?
chop replied to jshots's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I use an original Cobra SZ 4 wood with a Diamana redboard S flex at 43 inches long. Then the 5,7, and 9 woods with the same shaft at normal lengths but in regular flex. As a short hitter with irons and a little longer comparatively with woods, this setup works so well I can't tell you how much I love my set up. -
I got here too late. I was going to suggest the G400 max. It has a small weight built inside the head that is placed so that it will help you not hit a slice.

Played Elks Run on the east side of Cincinnati. It’s a Greg Norman course and it is in great shape. I shot a 74 with a birdie and two double bogeys. Par 71. The wind was up and gusting. I have no excuses except the wind. I played really well. I played with a Titleist left dash ball. That ball is sick.

What Ball Is Everybody Playing?

I don't know but I am hitting it noticeably further. Maybe it's because of my Ping G400max driver or it could be the left dash compression is 112 and the RXS is 66. I can't explain why the left dash was the longest ball in the 90 and under swing speed and it was the longest ball in the 105 and higher swing speed. Get this, the softer RXS spins less with my irons than the left dash. The left dash spins less than the RXS with my driver. I chip better with the left dash. I'm getting better scores with the left dash. so far. lol -
Fairway Woods Instead of Irons for Seniors
chop replied to micha's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I agree, dispersion is wider with most players with woods. In my situation I am a somewhat short hitter hitting my 4 iron 160. So my 9 wood goes 160, 7 wood 170, 5w 180, 4w 190-210. Having around an 85-90 swing speed with Mitsubishi Diamana shafts in S flex keeps my shots tighter than the average player with hdcp the same as mine. I really like the taller faced, more narrow face of the Cobra SZ. They are very accurate. -
Fairway Woods Instead of Irons for Seniors
chop replied to micha's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I'm 67 and around 15 years ago I went in search for a fw wood head that I liked. A buddy had the Cobra SZ and I hit it and loved it. Got on eBay and bought the 4,5,7, and 9 woods. I put some new Diamana Red shaft on them and never looked back. They are all great but that 9 wood is "Money" Lol I hit the 4 would so long it's ridiculous. I played in a scramble two weeks ago and stuck the 5 wood and the 4 wood to 5 feet on the two longest par 4s. I like these FW woods because they have a taller face. I'm not a fan of the shallow faced woods although I have hit a couple and they were fine. The taller face just appeals to me. I still use irons up to 5 iron. So yea, I love my FW woods. -
I think I agree with that. I feel like I can't really get a good read when the pin is in.

I'm just repeating something Sam Snead said. I figure he knows a lot about golf. He said this when talking about swinging a shovel to get stronger. You might be able to find it this on Youtube. It was from a tip I saw on TV many years ago.

What Ball Is Everybody Playing?

I have not measured the yardage really but I'm noticing that I'm hitting it in places that are leaving me closer to greens. I shot a 72 on Wednesday and my best drive of the day was 20 yards from being pin high on a 315 yard par 4. Yes the fairway was dry but there was no wind so yea I was excited. I'm also noticing that I am outdriving and staying up with guys that mostly outdrive me which is cool. It's like I have a low spin driver and I don't. The other thing I like is this ball spins nicely on shots to the green (irons and pitching), just not as well as the RXS I've been playing mostly because it is a yellow ball, and it feels super soft on full shots. The only downside to this ball is it feels hard and at this point with all that I love about this ball I'm kind of embracing that hard feeling. Ha A long hitting buddy of mine is using the longest ball from the test in the 90-105 mph swing speed which is the Maxfli Tour CG and after a couple of rounds he went out and bought 6 dozen of them lol. What I'm surprised about is that the Titleist ProV1X Left dash was the longest ball in the 90 and below and the 105 and above but not in the 90-105 category. My swing speed has always been on the border between 90 and 95 mph with my driver. My iron speed is 70-75 mph. I swing much more controlled and only go half to three quarters on my iron swing. -
I just bought 12 golf gloves (Kirkland/best gloves for the price) $75 for a dozen on ebay. And two dozen Titleist Prov1X Left Dash golf balls from PGA Superstore online.

Doesn't that club help with timing too? Anything heavier than your heaviest club will help your swing speed. Some of the old timers swung a shovel back in the day. During the winter I swing a weighted club. It most definitely helps so right on.

Like some have said, on course testing with a good swing is a different kind of test which I have done and yes I can see that 3 yards. Actually, I am seeing more because with my swing speed and angle of strike the left dash is going higher and straighter than the RXS. I'm like all players. One day I'm hitting my driver straight, next with a little fade, then with a little draw. I have found the left dash, as advertised, spins less with the driver. In the test on YouTube there was a difference of 31 or 32 yards with the longest ball and the shortest ball out of the 37 balls tested. Unfortunately, they did not show all of the distances of every ball in all 3 swing speeds they used. I would like to read the test from Mygolfspy because the RXS ball in 2018 was different than the RSX the next year. I saw where the newest RXS was about a yard longer according to Bridgestone I think, but for me the first RXS was firmer and straighter which made it go longer for me. To add to my test, my driver has one of if not the highest MOI number. I use a G400max with a Diamana Blue stiff shaft. -

Maybe so but I've been doing my own test between the ball I've played for 2 years(Bridgestone RXS) and the ProV1X left dash and the left dash is longer, higher flying, and stops better on greens with my irons. The thing is, I hate the hard feel compared to the RXS. Most importantly I am chipping and putting better with the left dash. Distance control is much better. -
I like it in and out but mostly out. It depends on the putt and if the pin is leaning and my confidence level on any given putt. I've missed putts with the pin that I thought would have gone in and didn't and vice versa. When playing with average golfers I will say take it out on a hole and the other guys never say put it back in after I putt. I like it out mostly. It's a better visual for me with no distractions like shadows or leaning pins. The hole just looks more receptive without a pin in. So, I ignore the data although I appreciate it.

Are you a Better Golfer than a Year Ago?
chop replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Just going with the two index fingers down the shaft grip (the old man grip) on my Spyder X has made me a better putter. It has also made me a better green reader. Two years ago, I changed the plane of my swing which really helped my driver and fairway wood accuracy. My goal is to shoot some rounds in the 60s consistently. I'd like to shoot my age before I can't play anymore. -

I saw a review on Youtube that was recent. They tested 37 different balls. The longest ball for the 105 and up swing speeds was the Titleist ProV1X Left Dash 329.78 yards The longest ball for the swingspeed from 90mph to 105mph was the Maxfli tour CG 284.48 yards. runner up was Taylormade Tour Response which finish with one of the highest scores of all balls which includes quality. The longest ball for 90 mph and under which I am on the high end of is Titleist ProV1X Left dash. They were surprised because it was the longest for the biggest hitters. It was 236.45 yards I bought a dozen which cost 50 bucks and they were correct. I played 3 rounds with that ball and it is a beast. There was a noticeable difference over the ball I play now which is the Bridgestone RXS. -
I'm 66 and I score in the 70s and 80s hdcp 6-8. I've been using the newest version on the Bridgestone RXS. I did use the older verson of that ball before the new one like 2018. I've tried both and I score much better with the older version. The 2018 has a more piercing flight that seems to hit the ground on a better angle. It also acts better on chip shots The new version is really soft felling. The old version is firmer. It fells between the Titleist and the new RXS. Problem is, you can't hardly find the 2018 version. Good thing I have 5 dozen of these balls. That should last me for a few years. ha

Opponent Did Not Know Stroke and Distance Rule
chop replied to ChetlovesMer's topic in Rules of Golf
I play on a little tour thing and they are so hung up on time that they say go up and hit where it goes out but you take 2 strokes. I'd rather hit a provisional because I usually hit it down the middle. Rather hit from there than dropping into who knows what near where it went out. -
Thanks Rulesman. I appreciate the answer. Sorry to put anyone out. I won't ask anymore questions on rules ever. I'll just download a rulebook onto my phone and move along. Thanks iacas and David in FL for the encouragement and the download.

I don't have a rule book but I asked the tournament director and he could only talk about the rule to do with the ball moving at address. It's no longer a penalty if you are not deemed to have caused the ball to move. He talked about if the ball moved that you have to replace the ball but he could not give me a definitive ruling. He asked me if I hit the ball while it was moving and I said I wasn't sure, I just saw it move so it was close. Do you know the ruling?
-
I had a putt and it was windy that day with crusty fast greens. I had a 10 foot birdie putt and I lipped it out and had 8 inches left. I did not mark it. I walked up, took my time, and when I took the putter back and as I changed directions the ball moved at least 4 mm and I don't really know for sure whether I hit it while it was moving or not. I gave myself a penalty even thought he rule of the ball moving has changed. If I did not cause the ball to move there is no penalty and I did not cause this ball to move. But what is the rule if you actually hit the ball while it moves? Or even if it stopped moving and you hit it without placing the ball back in it's original spot.

Thanks for all of the suggestions guys but I jumped the gun on this. Took the club out for two more rounds and hit it beautifully. I just didn't have faith in this shaft but now I am a believer. I was also feeling the pressure to hit a 7 wood that I just paid $300 for. It's the first new club I have purchased besides a driver in 20 years. I'll be buying some more of these woods for sure.
