TaylorMade Prepping to produce Non-Conforming Clubs
thanw replied to mvmac's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Glad they are thumbing their nose at the officious usga. I predicted one of the major manufacturers would do that and everyone was such a know it all saying no one would dare challenge the mighty usga for the hearts of the weekend warrior. Palmer and his no anchor belly putter rule, he was touting the ERC driver on national television. He should just shut up already. -
Beginner or not really doesn't enter into the money equation. Like others I suggest a fitting. Like others I recommend Ping, probably G series right on down the line. My guess would be white dot, stiff shaft, +1/2" length irons. I suggest that your matching iron set go down to at least the gap wedge. There are a ton of other high quality manufacturers too. The most important thing is to have fun.

Agreed. They probably are too long. I am your same height and tried +2" many years ago and it was too much. Now I use +1/2" and a couple degrees upright.

Dump the knockoffs and get something that makes you happy.

Wedges! Little bit of advice please....
thanw replied to RaCs's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
If you are hitting a high bounce 56 high then you must be hitting from nice fluffy lies so be happy. Consider a gap wedge (52* or 50*?? with the same bounce. -
Woo! New Clubs! Adams a5OS Hybrid/Irons Set

I found this: http://www.adamsgolf.com/products/shortgame/watson_2012_classic.php# but some other places say true temper shafts. -
Woo! New Clubs! Adams a5OS Hybrid/Irons Set
thanw replied to WalkTheCourse's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Walk, I am interested in what you think about your wedges. In particular what shafts did they come with and how durable is the club face? Other observations? Thanks -
as for bridgestone playing like rocks i can only say this. the e6 in my shag bag is the softest feeling ball in there and it has a nice orange color too. The rest of the bridgestone offerings are mostly high compression which I like but many do not.

Best $27 (or less) ball
thanw replied to Hattrix86's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
TP3, TP5, and TP Black on clearance at Academy for $20. This is not advertised and not on the website. In-store only. They were out of TP5 in Norman but still have 6 dz TP5 in S. OKC. Quite a few Black left. -
I played the old tight lies 3w many years ago for quite a stretch. A revelation is what I would call it too. Straight, long, and effortless. Whenever I read talk about the new Adams equipment it always piques my interest and I will give them all due consideration when shopping for new woods. Enjoy your new clubs.

Heavier club head = ball goes farther?
thanw replied to hamletsdead's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Heavier is better imo. -
Can I get a rough estimate on my clubs?
thanw replied to bikebuilder63's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
When the King Cobra irons first came out a long time ago I wanted a set really bad but never could afford them. Nowadays the market and demand for those has so much competition. I saw a brand new set of Mizuno MX-200 at the pawn shop for $199 and didn't even think about buying them. Play it again has sets of clubs coming out of their ears. Only certain makes have strong followings for older equipment. Actually if they were Cobra woods and TM irons they would imo ironically be easier to sell. -
Did you switch from black dot to green dot on purpose?

I get it. OP is good, everyone else sux. In fact, OP is so good that he has time to walk the line nosing into everyone else's bag/swing/whatever.

Budget Balls to stay away from?
thanw replied to mgd150's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Noodle, Boodle, whatever. Back when I played Rock Flite and losing a bunch of balls I found a Noodle just off the fairway. I gamed that thing the rest of the day and di great with it. Amazing ball for the price if it is the same as it was back them. I think the reason there is such a large disparity in opinion is that they aren't incredibly durable inside. The core may crack after enough hard whacks so shag it after one game would be my advice. -

Do golf shoes really need spikes?
thanw replied to goodputt's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
The shoes back when I started hurt bad. Had to tape my ankles and they had no padding in the bottom. I finished a lot of rounds barefoot (don't recommend due to course chemicals). Nowadays a new comfortable pair of shoes can be bought for $40 (half that used). My last round I walked and carried with no problems. Thirty years ago my feet would have been in agony. I do agree with the person who said if you stay within yourself tennies are fine too. Also agree with the person who said golf shoes are waterproof and that is a big plus and after you get your first soaker you realize how much so. -
54.10 for Sand Wedge - enough bounce?
thanw replied to Kieran123's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Sounds great. -
I personally will never wade down into a bunker with nice clubs such as you describe. The best sand wedge I ever had was a cheap 60* wal mart special with a very high bounce. The thing was a chunky marvel. My irons are ping but I bought a 52* Confidence new off amazon cheap for sand play.

Do golf shoes really need spikes?
thanw replied to goodputt's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Tried playing in tennis shoes for a number of rounds back in the 90s. My golf shoes weren't uncomfortable but face it the new tennis shoes are heaven. One day on a par 3 the grass was only slightly damp on the tee box. On the back swing my left foot shifted enough that when I came through the ball my line was a good 20* off. That was it for me.
