Problem hitting Sand Wedge from fairway
midwestswing replied to RightEdge's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
We'll have to agree to disagree. I know what works in my game and hope you all can say the same for yours. To the op, maybe give it a shot sometime. If it doesn't help, so what? The swing is a small part of scoring well in this game. Good luck to you! -

When I see golfers struggle from inside full swing range it's because they are GUESSING what size of swing will produce the correct distance. -

While I agree that statistically that you will make more five footers than seven, there is no way I would agree that a partial swing is as accurate distance wise as a full swing. This is proven every day on tour that pros don't lay up to awkward yardages. If the theory that the closer you are, the closer you hit it were true, no pro would ever lay up on a par five, EVER. -

It is absolutely NOTHING like that at all. Horrible comparison. -

Wait. I didn't read your post correctly. If I had a choice, absolutely I would walk it back to a full swing. -

Nope. I would take less club off the tee to ensure a full swing approach. -

Let me ask you this. What is your full swing distance with your wedges? If you are trying to hit half and three quarter shots, this could be a big part of your problem. I would suggest laying up to full swing yardages. You will save yourself ALOT of headaches. -
Pin in or out? With ball on the fringe
midwestswing replied to dchoye's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Leave it in. It's much more embarrassing to ask someone to pull it and then chunk or skull it across the green. -
The biggest thing I see from the face on view is how far your hands keep traveling after your shoulder turn stops. This is going to making syncing up your body and arms on the downswing very difficult. Try staying more connected on the backswing to make your impact more consistent.

I consider a hitter to be someone who "hits" at the ball with their right side versus swinging through the ball with the left side. I think you have to decide which one you are, and work on training that side of your body. I am not a student of Geoff Jones. To be honest, I had to google him to see who he was. I will be doing some more research on him and find out what his swing theories are.

Short, Relatively Flat Putts
midwestswing replied to boogielicious's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Put a line on your ball. Aim the line to your spot. Get over the ball. Trust the line. Stroke the putt. Count one-one thousand before moving your head. Go grab your ball out of the hole. (Fist pump optional) -
Hello everyone! I am a very right side dominate player. I like to hit with my right hand instead of swing with my left. With saying that, my misses have been the occasional hook or straight push. I would have days of great compression and others that the ball felt very clanky (if that is a word) off the face. I couldn't seem to pinpoint why I could knock down flags one week and struggle the next. Here is what I found. If my right arm either gets ahead of my body turn or lags behind, I struggle. I feel that the angle that I set at address between my upper body and right arm HAS to be consistent from takeaway all the way through impact. Keeping the right arm and body turning together forces me to get through the ball with my right side and prevents me from getting stuck or slowing my body through impact and then the arms keep going causing a hook. This will also force you to make an actual turn in the backswing instead of cheating with the arms. I know there is nothing new in golf, but for you hitters out there, try to focus on the dominate arm and body working as a unit. See how it works for you! Good luck everyone!

Flat left wrist and its position at impact
midwestswing replied to jd924's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I think of the hands getting to the ball before the clubhead. Where you need to get your hands at impact will depend on ball position. If you play the ball off the inside of your lead foot then yes, your hands need to get to the lead leg prior to impact. Don't over think it. -
Mental toughness, Competition thoughts?
midwestswing replied to spduffey's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I use to get pretty nervous during tournament play. The first few holes were normally the worst. I now make a game plan before each round. I download a scorecard of a new course and based off the layout and yardage, will decide what I am going to hit off of each tee before I get to the tournament. This puts me at ease that I have a plan in place. After the first day, if I need to adjust I will, but I will not change my game plan in the middle of a round. FYI - for par threes I will have three clubs to pick from based on wind. -
Why not just accept hitting your full shot and ending up 20-25 feet from the hole? I don't understand. The greens you play must be VERY narrow front to back. You are more precise than I my friend.

At your level, I would approach each tee shot knowing you have an extra shot on every hole to get it on the green and then you have two putts for your bogey. If you hit a green in regulation, super, but there is absolutely no reason to put pressure on yourself to do so. Don't compound mistakes. If you hit a bad shot, play for double bogey on that hole. Take your lumps and move on. Also, for every tee shot, play a club you are confident you will get in or close to the fairway. Do a metal countdown of the clubs in your bag for each shot you are about to play. "Can I confidently hit the driver in or around the fairway?" and if your answer is no or hell no, move on to the three wood and so on. Pick the longest club you can but make confidence priority over distance and I guarantee you will find your groove again. Good Luck!

Question...What do you do when....
midwestswing replied to antnee94's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I have been through a couple slumps and what I have found both times is that I was trying to incorporate swing changes before they were "course ready". This is only my opinion but a swing change is only "course ready" when you don't have to think about it during a round. I play my best when I pick my target and swing away. If I am thinking about anything mechanical during play, I might as well of stayed home. I know it sounds cheesy but I love that commercial where palmer says "swing your swing". Your swing is the one you don't have to think about. Good luck!! -
I hit a draw. The only time I would consider hitting a fade is a low punch fade to get out of trouble and advance the ball toward the green. Most players do not try to work the ball both ways because it is very difficult to control a fade and a draw from hole to hole. I never start the ball off of the green. If it's a right pin location, I hit it at the pin and let it draw to the middle of the green. Not every hole is a birdie hole. If it doesn't set up for your stock shot, play for par and move on

HA! There is no one answer for that question. As I said, every swing is different so the way you get there is going to be and or feel different than anyone else. I think most people don't know what a good impact position FEELS like. If you don't know where you are going, how the heck are you gonna get there?

Here is my opinion on the right elbow. It's not a fundamental to a good swing. At the end of the day, impact is really the only fundamental to the golf swing. The different routes each player takes to get there is as personal as a fingerprint. I think it's very easy to get so distracted with our swings, we forget we are playing golf. No one ever got paid for a pretty swing. I know lots of guys who have great looking swings that will never break 80. I have a buddy who almost broke 80 for the first time last weekend. Missed a putt on 18 for a 79. As we were talking over a beer afterwards, he said he couldn't believe he hit one in the hazard on 16. He was worried about his swing instead of the 36 putts he had!!! Good luck everyone!

Topped every shot at the range yesterday
midwestswing replied to LI Hacker's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
First, I said unless you are getting custom fit for clubs it is useless. (You said yourself it's not likely necessary at all) Second, video can be a good tool, but I wouldn't actively seek out someone who uses it just based on that. (Let's face it, people have been looking at Ben Hogans swing for over a half century and can't figure out a way to repeat his action. This leads me to believe if you can't figure out what works in a swing, why is it so easy to figure out what doesn't just by watching tape?) Third, if my teacher wanted to film me swing, I would think he finally lost his ability to read ball flight patterns. (Doesn't matter whether I am a two or a twenty, the ball doesn't care and reacts because of science, not because the ball thinks I'm good.) Fourth, you have no idea what level my swing is at. I could have a 10 handicap long game and tour pro short game for all you know. I'm not trying to fight with you or tell you your way is wrong. All I am saying is that a lot of histories great teachers were able to do so without video. I actually think you show insecurity in your ability to dissect a swing by asking if you can put it on video. In my opinion, anyone with knowledge of the golf swing could analyze a video in slow motion. Just because you can watch a movie, doesn't mean you can act! -
Your lower body is very active on the backswing. You look as though you have good flexibility. I would try swinging with the feeling your standing in three feet of mud. Sometimes what feels like not moving the lower body at all, is actually in reality, the correct amount.

Charging for cancelled lesson
midwestswing replied to John Stone's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
You can charge whatever you want, but don't be surprised when people don't find your time as valuable as you do.
