  1. As mentioned, it could be an equipment issue. Your ball selection might not spin enough or your wedge's grooves could be worn down. I've always heard that in order to perform that low trajectory spin shot we see on TV every weekend, you need to strike down on the ball (obviously) and have a fairly high swing speed (plus a lot of practice doing it). And keep in mind those guys play with new wedges every other event if not every week. When I first got my wedges, the grooves were so sharp they would cut the ball's covering and I'd get 5-8 feet of backspin. A few years later, I can't remember the last time I cut a ball with the grooves, and I only get 1-3 feet of backspin on full wedges.
  2. My only instructor used to tell me to hold the club vertically and loosen my grip until the club wanted to slide through. I still do this before every shot. Never lost the club from not gripping it tight enough nor seen someone do that. Looser grip helps my tempo too. The looser my hands and forearms feel, the better my tempo and swing gets. Sidenote: I used to use an interlocking grip, but recently changed to the Vardon overlap. I found that I would naturally grip tighter with the interlocking. Once I made the switch, my grip became much "softer."
  3. I haven't read Power Golf, but I absolutely love Five Lessons. Such a great description of the golf swing. I occasionally go back and flip through it to read certain sections.
  4. Was at Highland Hills GC in Greeley, CO.
  5. Saw a guy on the range hitting cross-handed a few weeks ago in Colorado. Real nice guy. Started small talking with him and finally asked about it. He said he had some form of a shoulder injury and that was the only way he could swing. He also claimed that because of the mechanics of it, he always hit the ball a mile high. It's certainly strange when you see someone do it in person.
  6. Hahaha, I sat here for a few minutes trying to come up with some form of an analogy that would work but I got nothing.
  7. Hahahaha, I had to after you said you had to. Ah Urban Dictionary... never fails to amuse me what people come up with.
  8. Hahahaha, I'm not sure if I want to Google that or not. Always timid of googling certain phrases since my geology class during undergrad when I googled "glory holes." Boy was I in for a shock.
  9. No offense to you, but I'm a little shocked at how many people come on here and start a thread asking which clubs they should get. I know golfers like to talk golf, and if you're an unfortunate soul like me, a lot of your immediate friends and family aren't golfers who share your passion. But I feel like a broken record with each of these threads. The only way to decide which club is best for you is to hit it. I can't tell you how many times I've hit a club and hated it and my playing partner swears it's the best club he's ever hit. I understand people seek reviews from those who may already have the clubs, but the same rule still applies. Picking out clubs is like picking out a mate. You can ask your buddies what they think of the girl you've invited out for drinks, but you know they have different tastes than you. So you take it with a grain of salt.
  10. I always have some type of swing thought in my head. Rarely do I ever make a swing without something going on in my head. If I'm swinging well, its just "smooth swing." If I'm not striking the ball too great, it varies on which fundamental I've abandoned on previous shots. Everything from "keep your weight back" (I've always fought leaning forward on my backswing) to "look down at the ball even after you've hit it."
  11. Dustin Johnson admits in an interview that once Vijay wasn't penalized for his use of Deer Antler Spray, he began a routine regiment of Bullshark Testosterone injections.
  12. I've done that so many times. Not because I was swinging hard but just not paying attention. Always very painful. Appreciate the laughs hahaha
  13. Haven't been to a PGA event yet. Considering going to the WGC at Firestone, the Greenbrier Classic, or the Congressional. Have always wanted to see these guys operate in person.
  14. I completely agree with Zeph. Get fitted and let that decide which club fits you best, not the other way around. But just my personal opinion, the AP1s are a waste. Either spring for the AP2s or buy a different club. I found the AP1s to be dead feeling. Never could judge where the ball was on the face at impact. The only other club I've hit from your list are the Callaways. And again, wasn't very impressed when comparing it to other manufacturers' irons. With that said, you need to hit them yourself and make the ultimate decision. I know a few guys who love their AP1s.
  15. Poplar Grove Golf Course in Amherst, VA. It is the final Sam Snead course design. Amazing views through the rolling hills of Virginia. Golf course is always in fantastic condition. It is probably a tough course for beginners with quite a few forced carries. But it is one of the must-plays here in Virginia. Golf Digest rates it as one of the best in state every year. It has been a few years since I played it but I still remember almost every hole. If their green fees are a bit steep for you, not too far away from there in the college town of Farmville, Virginia (yes, you read that correctly) is another fantastic golf course in The Manor. All bent-grass greens and fairways and at a steal of a price. It would be up there with Poplar Grove but just doesn't have the same level of beauty in its natural views with its geography.
  16. I've done that exact same thing. Was playing a friend's home course, 18th was a par 5 slight dogleg right. Piped my drive to the middle of the fairway. Had 192 to the middle of the green (at that yardage, it's all I'm aiming for) and hit a great 5i which rolled to the back of the green, about 30 feet from the pin. 4 putted... That memory haunts every eagle putt I stand over now.
  17. Went out on a limb with my picks this week. Jason Dufner, Boo Weekly, Ben Crane, and Ryan Palmer. Always enjoy watching this tournament for some reason.
  18. I'm imagining that wonderful stinger 2i and 300 yard 5w he hits. Leave the Tiger headcover on and hit the fairways. Although it sounds like there are a few holes where driver will be needed, so we shall see.
  19. First, I'll state that I'm far past ready for this Sergio-Tiger thing to go away. Second, it all depends on intent. If Sergio was attempting to make a joke about the Fuzzy-Tiger fried chicken incident, then no it's not racial. If he's making that statement because of the racial stereotype, then yes it is.
  20. In all honesty, if you know what you're doing, you can "work" the ball with cavity backs also. It's not like that is a blade-only option. I would advise against buying clubs online, unless you've hit that exact model, shaft included, already. If you like the slimmer looking clubs like a blade or player's club, and you can strike it well, go for it. If you aren't a very good ball striker, try something that tends to be a little more forgiving. But first and foremost, get fitted and demo multiple clubs before buying a set.
  21. I understood pre-shot routine to mean the repetitive process you perform before every shot. I didn't include selecting my club, walking off the yardage, etc. My pre-shot routine starts when I'm standing behind the ball and I'm clear to take my shot. The word routine should eliminate a lot of these questions.
  22. First impressions for me is that you would benefit from a shorter backswing. And by that I mean still making your full shoulder turn, but limiting the amount the arms move. The 2nd video clearly shows your left arm breaking down at the top of your backswing.
  23. I think he's a lock. I have a feeling the shorter length will keep the driver in the bag for Tiger, and I don't know the official stats on this, but I feel like he hits more fairways with the fairway woods and 2i. Tiger hitting fairways is going to result in him playing really well, especially with his current ball striking.
  24. Mizuno MP-64 or Titleist AP2 are my two current favorite non-blades.
  25. I knew a kid who used to go to the local public park and practice pitching those foam practice balls into a basket. Maybe that's an option for you? Hard to practice chipping without a green though.
