Custom fitting clubs is a great idea and highly recommended! lie angle is definately an important thing to have correct. there are several factors to determine the correct lie angle for you and your swing. first is getting fitted by a professional or consulting a fitting chart (here > FITTING CHART and the other is to get some lie angle tape and fit your irons using that too. if your irons are impacting the sole of the club towards the toe, you need to have them more upright. likewise...if you are towards the heel, you need to be more flat. and to answer your question...i think for every 1º off you are, its like 10' difference in shot dispersion.

Just remember that OB markers (stakes, walls, fences) are deemed fixed an not movable and no relief can be taken from them.

help me with this duck hook please :(
bigphil replied to King Cobra II's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
can you take a video of your swing? down the line, and face on? this would help greatly with analysis. otherwise its kind of a crap shoot, because somebody might tell you to change something that doesnt need to be changed. but....have somebody stand behind you and watch your swing. make a full backswing and stop at the top. check the club face angle (easiest with your driver). if its pointing to the sky (i would be my paycheck it it) you are closed and this would be a big cause for a huge hook, or huge slice if you dont make a full rotation on the downswing with your hips. let us know! -
precisely! i would really refrain from using it, unless it really does work great for you.

Iron Swing (video) with Bonus Comedy
bigphil replied to CPHoya's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Here is what i used to correct the same flaw in my swing (i used to have a very flat swing too) a good drill to fix this.....requires about a 8" piece of 2x4, with one end cut to about a 45º angle. pick a target line, place a ball directly in front of the piece of wood (cut side should be towards the ball, about 1" away), and using an 8 iron, take the club back and make a swing at the ball. the wood should slide straight back very smoothly. if you flip it back, or it flies away very fast, you are using your arms and hands to take away the club. if you do it properly with the shoulders, it should slide very smoothly. good drill that i use at the range all the time! -
Crazy Practice session- Please advise
bigphil replied to albatross's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
maybe try to widen your stance if its too narrow (shoulders should be on the inside of the feet). maintain your spine angle throughout the swing and keep your knees flexed!!!! if you have a grass practice facility, put 4 tees in the ground 1" apart and about 1" away from the ball. dont hit the tees and you'll never shank it. get into a good grove and learn how you are swinging to correct your flaw. -
Swing Help - Really Inconsistent Results (Videos)
bigphil replied to wofat's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
A few more things i didnt see mentioned. pause your 7-iron video at 33 seconds. other than the obvious mistakes already mentioned...your chest and arms aren't very well connected. your chest and arms should stay "connected" meaning the V shape should be maintained throughout the backswing, and be in the same position throughout the downswing as well. some tips/drills to help some of these flaws. 1.) your reverse pivot > keep your eyes level to your target line and this will help stop that. its ok to rotate the head slightly, but you also are changing the angle of it....bad. 2.) your forward press > as mentioned...your ball postion is to far forward in your stance. take your stance with the ball in the middle of your stance, place the club behind the ball and let the club position your hands, meaning set the club on the ground as it was designed by the manufacturer, and it will tell you where your hands should go. shorter irons should make your hands naturally more aligned with the ball, and longer clubs the ball should be just in front of your hands (i.e. : driver) 3.) hips/lower body > do this simple drill to get a fell for a good lower body/hip rotation. put your feet together and take some 3/4 swings with your driver. this should give you the correct feeling of lower body rotation. dont forget to finish with a full follow through! 4.) stance > you have a slightly narrow stance which is going to give you bad balance and stability. the outside of your shoulders should be on the insides of your feet (you can adjust slightly for your comfort). 5.) closed face at top > this is probably causing MOST of your bad hooks, or huge slice if you dont clear your hips. try this to get a feel for the correct postion at the top. USING A CORRECT GRIP....grip your driver, now slide your right hand to just below the grip so your hands are about 8" apart. now place the club at the half swing location so the shaft and club face a parallel to the target line. now simply push back with your left shoulder and look at the postion of your forearm, top of left hand, club face should all be at the same angle. a mirror is handy for this one. another type of this drill is to grip the club normally, address the ball and then hinge your wrists straight up towards your and then take your backswing and then continue with a full swing (dont actually take a swing at a ball though). hope these tips help, and good luck! -
This is a good general chart for finding a base length/lie angle that you should consult. as well as trying to demo clubs with different legths/lie angles and using some lie angle tape on the sole of the club. be sure to take the wrist measurement with your shoes on. measure from the biggest crease in your wrist! http://www.pinggolf.com/uploadedFile...Code_Chart.pdf

well your clubhead speed will increase, as well as your distance. as long as you are going to lengthen your clubs, you should check your lie angle too! nothing but GOOD things happen when you custom fit your clubs
-
i dont know the answer to that. the golf stores around my area let you take clubs to any practice facility (hit from mats only) and try out clubs. this is how i have always done it. i have been surprised a few times, thinking i was going to get a certain club, and found that I hated it and went with something completely different. but if that is your only option, i guess you dont really have a choice.
-
I didnt vote. Who cares what other people like or choose. If i were you I would thoroughly test all the major brands and determine which one suites you best and performs the best for YOUR swing!
-
maintain your spine angle and the flex in your knees, fully extend your arms (but dont "reach" for the ball) and DO NOT decelerate on the downswing. if you change either of these throughout your swing, you will likely sh@** it. work on that, and i guarantee you will be ok and regain your confidence!

Was that from Leadbetter? i saw the same tip while watching the Travelers yesterday. i think he was talking about short iron play (if i remember correctly). i typically do the same thing so my hips clear for a full release. seems to work quite well.

This one could!

i agree. my gf and I watched the second half of the last round and it was just as you said, commercial....2 shots, commercial....2 shots. it pissed me off!

i would rather do something else to Natalie Gulbis i would rather caddie for Tiger....seems that he has a few more of the jaw dropping moments and the crowd goes wild!

there were some good ones on this thread, but out of them all....this one made me laugh the most! good stuff
-
i cant believe nobody else saw this one! look at the hands during the first movement of the backswing...they are starting the swing, not the shoulders. doing this is causing all sorts of problems...quick backswing, picking the club up way to fast, possibly closed at the top (which would cause very open at impact). a good drill to fix this.....requires about a 8" piece of 2x4, with one end cut to about a 45º angle. pick a target line, place a ball directly in front of the piece of wood (cut side should be towards the ball, about 1" away), and using an 8 iron, take the club back and make a swing at the ball. the wood should slide straight back very smoothly. if you flip it back, or it flies away very fast, you are using your arms and hands to take away the club. if you do it properly with the shoulders, it should slide very smoothly. good drill that i use at the range all the time!

Beginner - Want to help me with my swing? (video)
bigphil replied to mellojoe's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Your grip is a bit off. the crease formed by your thumb and index finger should be facing the same way (typically both lines should be over your right shoulder)...also, your start your swing with your hands.....big no no! think of your arms and hands as extensions to your shoulders. you need to concentrate on bringing the club back with your shoulders, and not your arms and hands. a good drill for that would be to just take some half or 3/4 swings with your feet close together and really work on taking it back with your shoulders. having your feet close together will also help you get a feel for a good hip turn on the follow through. -
Driving with my ball from Center
bigphil replied to pittpanther's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
If you have the capability, post a video of your swing with the driver....down the line and face on. that way we can critique your swing and point out any flaws we see -
I think Johnny Miller is a douche bag. i appreciate very few, if any of his comments (albeit some of them are funny and often you can pick up a good tip or two). I think he gives players such a hard time when they make a mistake and then tells them what they should have done instead. Im sure if he was right next to the players when he says his comments, he would have a couple of black eyes. throughout watching the US Open i probably told Johnny outlound to just "shut the **** up!" about 10 times. well....that felt good to say i will agree though...he says some funny stuff sometimes.
-
i agree with the comments posted. you start off with a very flat swing (probably a hook and pull are your most often misses). also...you seem to be starting your downswing with your arms and are not utilizing a good coil in your body. try pausing at the top of the backswing for just a split second. you dont have much lateral movement which is good, but you do slightly dip your head at the top of the backswing. your stance is way to narrow. the outside of your shoulders should be on the insides of your feet. your clubs do seem a bit short, but you do have long arms, so its hard to tell. you should consult a fitting chart to measure from the biggest crease in your wrist to the floor while wearing shoes to get an accurate guidline Ping golf club fitting chart

I'm 6'1" and only went with +1/4". must have longer arms than you well thanks for the insight guys...i will compare to my cobra wedge and see what the length looks like.
-
I recently got a new set of irons and custom fit them to +1/4". My question is, should i also lengthen my wedges? i currently carry three: 52º Cleveland RTG+DSG, 56º RTG+DSG, 60º Reg588. all are at the standard factory length now. what do you recommend?
