7 Handicapper Looking for Advice...
bigphil replied to Chris5573's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
i just went through the same thing....i have been playing x-14's for the past 5 years and needed some new clubs because they were just not doing it for me anymore. I went to the range and demo'd several different clubs (x-20 tour, x-forged, ap2, mp-57, mp-67, cobra pro cb). i went into thinking i was going to want the x-20 tour being a callaway fan, but after hitting them i wanted to puke. i then hit all the other irons throughout a period of about 1 month, to finally choose the cobra pro cb. i would have never thought i would buy cobra's, but the clubs are smokin hot!!! best advice is to just take a couple weeks and hit all the "players irons" you can, i bet you'll be surprised to what you end up choosing also....dont forget to get custom fitted! not only by a professional, but do you own testing as well. play around with different shafts (if you can), lie angle, and lengths. it helped me out A TON when i went to order my new irons. i took the pro's advice and my own testing into cosideration when i got the new clubs (he said +1/2" and +2º, but +1/4" and +2º felt the best to me and produced better shots). good luck! -
What custom length irons are you using?
bigphil replied to JYB's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
my sig says it all, and im 6'½" i not only simply tested many different combinations of length when i was shopping for my new irons, i got fitted, and also used fitting charts from a bunch of different sites. my fitter told me to go with +½" but most charts said standard length with 2º up. so with that i tested lengths ranging from standard to +1" and +¼" produced the best results, and felt the best to me. http://www.truetemper.com/golf/fitting.asp -
quite a few. the most recent one is the 12th hole at Chambers Bay Golf Course in WA. its 262 up hill from the "Sand" tees. both times if have played there i drove the green. first time was pin high about 20' putt, the second time i was on the back tier and the pin was up front (about a 50' putt). birdied both times

pulling steel shafts and putting them into another set of heads is fine to do. as long as you do not super heat the hosel/shaft when pulling you should have no problems. just be sure to clean out the heads of any old epoxy and score them with sand paper or whatever you have, and do the same with the tip of the shaft all the way up to the beginning of the ferrule. just be sure to apply short bursts of heat to the hosel (like 10 seconds or so at a time) and then pull those puppies out. double check that the tip diameter and style match both heads before pulling them out only to later find that they are not the same.

How about Bandon Dunes in Oregon? some of the sweetest courses around and there are three right around the corner from each other. i would DEFINATELY check it out! I guarantee you wont be disappointed! http://www.bandondunesgolf.com/golf.cfm

dont know if this question has been asked yet, but....is this guy still going to be an 8 when it comes time for him to play? i mean...i dont see him becoming a great golfer overnight and dropping to a 2 or so, but i'm sure he is putting in a lot of effort right now to get ready for this thing...i know i would be, and would shoot a 99 and take my 50:1 odds and make a nice chunk of change

Yep, hes a dumb @ss....tell him to read rule 19-5 and rule 22.

What do you sacrifice for wedges?
bigphil replied to rmccabe6's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
im kinda in the same boat as you right now. i have a 46º, 52º, 56º right now, but just recently dropped my 5 wood to pack in a 60º. i like my 5 wood a lot better than my 3 wood so i think in the end i might sacrifice my 3 wood to get the extra wedge. i hit my 3 wood about 260 off the deck and about 270-275 off the tee. my 5 wood is about 240-250 off the deck and around 260 off the tee. i hit my 5 a lot more plus have a ton more control with it. tuff call -
thats hilarious! why would he care anyways...especially if he is being an ass (speculating) he should have kept his mouth shut to see if you somehow could get a penalty. he should read the rules again and note that you can practice on the previous putting green, any practice putting green, and the tee box of the next hole being played.

on my high school team it was a stroke play match, with points awarded per-player. bogey=1 point, par=2 points, birdie=3 points etc. total points for all varsity players were combined, and the team with highest score won. my advice to you is just have fun! if you have a bad hole, dont worry, you'll get 'em back on the next hole! probably the most nervous shot was the first tee shot for me. if i were you, i would hit the range before the match, and just envision your first tee shot. you the same club you are going to hit on the first tee and just keep hitting that same shot so you kinda get into a groove. this always helped me out

i dont keep up on college golf, but i was just starting to check it out. I played quite a few rounds with Kyle Stanley when I was in high school out at Canterwood golf club in Gig Harbor. he has always had a great swing and apparently has done quite well in the golf world im glad to see! i'll root for those guys too

looks like you have gotten quite a few pointers, so i wont add any "swing" advice, but have you checked your lie angle on your irons? i would go the range and ask to borrow there lie angle board and get some lie angle tape and see where the sole is hitting the ground at impact. if its towards the toe, it will cause good shots to be right of the target also.

just this april it decided to snow in WA. i just happened to be playing golf that day, and on the second fairway, it starting DUMPING! snow/hail kinda mix, but these things were about 1/2" in size! i took a picture of the green after we got off of it...i will try to post it later (its on my cell phone) if i remember. the next hole is a par 3 about 165, i hit my 7 about 25 feet to the hole. i hit my putt like i was going for a 70 footer just to get it through the snow....put it about 2 feet and made the par

i played with a fellow like this today. he had the WORST pace of play i have ever seen! im not speedy-gonzalez, but i play ready golf, keep it in play (most of the time) and generally keep a very steady pace. from the first fairway this guy stands behind his ball visioning his shot for about 20 seconds, then he stands over the ball for another 10 and then hits a crappy shot. he did this all day and it only took me until the 3rd tee box (i was playing tips and these guys were playing white) i hit my shot, the next guy hits his, and then this guy gets up there again and just sits there...sits there...sits there! i lost it!!! i said, "holy crap man!" just hit the damn ball! we were already a hole and a half behind after two! he speed it up a little after that, but still....my gosh! it drove me crazy, all day!

it may dry up the tape so its not as sticky as it used to be. i would just tear a piece off and check its tackiness...that should tell you wheather it will still work or not.
-
as of late this is true for me too! my home course the opening hole is a 400 yd par 4. i always have a beautiful drive on the hole leaving me 100-115 yds for a nice full sw. the last few times out i have birdied it and then doubled the second hole
-
(-2) 69. it came down to the last hole with a buddy of mine. a par 5 that bends right and then back left. we both knocked it on in two and he made his eagle putt for a 68 and a birdied for a 69 still havent beat him yet!

i personally enjoy watching Tiger play. if i were in the field playing a tournament and Tiger wasnt playing that week, it would take a bit of the glory away i would think. if you beat him that week, you know you just beat the best player in the world!...and that would be pretty sweet
