  1. I'm sure there is actually an article about it on this site, with full step by step instructions. Look it up, I'll post the link later. Link here
  2. I reckon Ben ranks up there too.
  3. Now you're just getting silly. Its not really a case of getting riled up, just stating a fact that if some person or team is going to be classed as the biggest sports star ever they would need to have international fame and recognition. Big domestic stars as good as they are do not have this.
  4. It just says baseball is also big in Japan! Unfortunately its not that big in Europe, Africa, Australia, Russia or many other parts of the world.
  5. This thread reminds me why I hate compensation and blame culture. When I was a kid I had loads of fun doing things that were probably dangerous. I climbed trees etc... If I fell out, my parents didn't sue the park, or school, or man who planted the tree, it was just an accident and we got on. These days its always about finding someone to blame. It benefits no one except the legal teams making money off it. Businesses have to take extra precautions which cost money and these costs get passed on to the consumer. I can half see the point of people saying the house was in that location, so its the homeowners fault. However the guy didn't build his house on the guys backswing or anything, it was already there. The golfer should take the responsibility to avoid hitting the house. I'm sure he didn't try to hit the house on purpose, but he still failed in his responsibility not to hit it. So he should accept his actions. Although I must say the guy whose house it is could be a little nicer about things.
  6. After mentioning Bo Jackson to a colleague at work, they suggested Tim Henman or Phil 'The Power' Taylor!
  7. Ha ha ha! In reply to a post about many Americans not knowing whats going on outside their state, let alone country you post this. I really REALLY hope it was a form of irony!
  8. No, just the rest of the world! Unlike many of the basketball, baseball, NASCAR, Indycar and American football stars listed by many people. As previous posters have suggested, for the biggest sports star ever, you are likely to be limited to just a few sports that are really global. In my mind the jury is still out, I'll post my suggestions when I have decided.
  9. On the terminology front, I thought betting is the act of gambling or gaming. Placing money on sports, horses, or something where the outcome can be controlled etc is gambling. Placing money on roulette, cards or something where there is no control etc is gaming. For the same reason coin operated machines generally have 2 categories: AWP (Amusement With Prizes) - Eg Slots SWP (Skill With Prizes) - Eg Video quiz or reaction test game This is certainly how the gambling\gaming industry considers it anyway.
  10. I'm curious, what are the differences between gambling and betting? In my opinion, real men, don't tell other men what they should do to be real men! Oh wait a minute... d'oh!
  11. Over in the UK, you can get insurance for this specific purpose. It usually covers a couple of other bits too, such as theft of clubs, bar bill in case of a hole in 1 etc.
  12. The language should be fine. In most European areas where there are lots of tourists English is spoken, especially by younger generations. Although knowing some of the local language would be sensible and also polite and respectful. The Algarve has some nice courses, but beware in Portugal and Spain lots of courses have been built in the last 10 years to cash in on the popularity of these spots. These are the courses that are really built to sell villas rather than provide a fun and challenging round of golf. Some green fees can also be high on these courses, so definitely do your research first.
  13. I have these, and I love them. What do you want to know about them? Post whatever you want to ask and I'll try my best to answer.
  14. With regards to the debit card - credit card protection I am pretty sure that with a credit card legally you are liable for less if things go wrong, just lots banks currently operate good protection on debit cards out of good will. I'd rather rely on the law than good will. Plus the interest free period alone is worth it to me, but as mentioned before it is an individual thing. If you can handle a credit card properly get one, if you can't trust yourself don't. However don't base this decision on what the guy next door or 'most' people do.
  15. Thats not true. In fact only recently the EU gave up trying to force this legislation on the UK and traders are perfectly welcome to sell goods in lbs and ozs.
  16. In all the posts I've read it is either one or the other. Whats wrong with a mixture of both. I'm 6' 1 tall and weigh just over 13 stone, but I buy my food in grams, and when I go to the gym I lift kilos. I buy my pepsi in 2litre bottles and drink it from 500ml glasses, but I drink pints of beer. When I drive I get about 35 miles to the gallon, but I pay about 86p for each litre of fuel I fill up with. If I am driving the national speed limit here is 70mph, but if I am measuring my own speed I would think of my 100 metre time. I know where the 5meter and 25metre lines are on the rugby pitch, but I also know how many yards I hit each golf club. I know 100F is hot and 30F is cold, although I am more comfortable with water freezing at 0 and boiling at 100, with 25 being a nice day to play golf. Its really not difficult to switch between systems, so why not use both? I'm suprised most people who do mechanical things aren't more used to using both systems also. Depending where your car\lawnmower\pedal bike etc comes from you probably use both metric and imperial allen keys and socket sets etc.
  17. Its not only about the arithmetic, its also about how people think. How big is a can of coke? 12oz or 330ml - obviously the answer depends on where you come from and how you think. Plus the arithmetic of converting between grams and kg may be easier, but dividing 1 kilogram between varying numbers of people is not so easy. an example; Metric - 10 can easily be divided (leaves a whole number) by 10, 5, 2, 1 Imp. oz in lb - 16 can easily be divided by 16, 8, 4, 2, 1 Imp inches in feet - 12 can easily be divided by 12, 6, 4, 3, 2, 1 Also although most countries are officially metric, they often still use another traditional system. Japan is an example, with its Shakhanho. England is another example although officially metric, road signs are in miles, beer is served in pints, and it is possible to buy food in ozs and lbs.

    Rugby

Yeah, I think it was the Flint rogues. Never ended up there though. I was trying to come over with a teammate from SA. He ended up playing for Western Province in the Vodacom cup that season, and I ended up staying with my club over here. If I can find any of my old photos I might put some up too. Whats HS rugby in MI like? If I find myself living in that part of the world again, I'd be tempted to get involved in coaching a team.

    Rugby

Yeah, I used to play, and funnily enough I nearly played pretty near you too. At one point I was going to play for a team in Flint, can't remember their name now. I played my best at high school and played county level rugby, and played in a Daily Mail cup winning team, which is a pretty big schools competition in England. The final is at Twickenham which is pretty awesome! I trained with England schoolboy teams, but I was never quite at the level to get picked for the team, and after getting in a bit of trouble, I just stopped playing rugby and concentrated more on golf. *Edit - I meant to ask, which high school, and what position do you play?
  20. I heard from a 'reliable source' that miura used to make Tigers car too, and Buick just put their badge on it.
  21. I found this interesting with regards to the 'mind v technique'. In the middle ages most continental european armies used crossbows, but the British used archers - this is golf related slightly, so keep reading! With crossbows you could look straight down the bolt and fire. With a long bow, to get the power to pierce armour plate, you would need to pull the string back past your ear. Obviously by doing this you cannot look down the arrow to get a line of sight. British archers used to spend a long time practising and learning to be able to visualise and feel an arrow to the target. In the end the bow turned out to be the better weapon only because it was quicker to fire, both weapons were similar in accuracy. This seems the same for putting. Some people are better just visualising and feeling, and others prefer the more technical based method of having a target and then mechanically hitting that target. Personally I prefer the feel method, but it is better to find what works for you and stick with it, even if its different from what the guy next door is doing.
  22. Another company that springs to mind is Orka. I don't think I have seen these in the US, but I'm not 100% sure on that.
  23. Vega are definately pretty popular in the UK. Off the top of my head I'd also think MD Golf and BenRoss could fit into this category. Some golf companies price fix so you pay the same price wherever you are in the world. However I'd say that when the exchange rate was $2 to £1 quite a few clubs were much cheaper in the US. For example I bought some custom fit CG12s for $100 each, which was just over £50 at the time. In the UK they were selling for £75 in standard fit.
  24. Trial without jury, and no presumption of innocence - nice! Just curious; how does someone who is illiterate write a book? Remember to be truly cultured you have to understand other cultures such as "country fried rubes" even if this is no to your personal tastes.
  25. Yes, I think its a very interesting read, and paints a different picture of Daly from the view most have of him. If you read the above mentioned book, you will realize that Daly does recognize that he has a problem. Recognizing a problem and being able to resolve it are not the same thing.
