Played twice so far this week. Monday the Players Club in Henderson. Shot 85. 7/14 FW's, 5/18 greens, 34 putts. My short game killed me. My ballstriking was horrendous. But, its was the first time I've played in about a month. Fighting a hook with my driver, which is weird for me since I normally hit a fade, which was really annoying. Tuesday, I went to the driving range. I was really annoyed with my ball striking. I started playing with a forward press, and instantly my ball striking was there. I was hooking the ball anymore with my driver. Needless to say, I couldn't wait to get back on the golf course. Wednesday at the McDonald's course in Evansville, shot 40 with 4 bogeys. Still wasn't putting well at all. I missed 2 birdie putts within 5 feet. All in all, I played well. Can't wait to get back out again.

Looking for Beginner set reccomendation
dkinser86 replied to JML22's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Seems like you like the OS Burners, so I would go with them. They are good clubs, and you already have a rapport with them. -
Is there a way to obtain a handicap without joining the club? Money is tight right now, and I don't really want to have to join a club just so I can get a handicap. Thanks for the help!

Its my fall break, so i've finally gotten to play some golf. This past week, i've played some of the best golf i've ever played. To start it, I shot 84 at Cambridge, which is a really tough course. Its a links style course, and lots of wind. I didn't feel i played well, but I scored really well (obviously) Then I play at Country Oaks, A shorter course, but had some quirks, and I've never played there before. Shot 41 with a quad to end it. I wanted to throw up. But 41 is still good for me. Yesterday, I shot 78 at Quail Crossing. I haven't been in the 80s since last summer. shot 41-38. Sad thing is that I had three doubles. But I also bad back-to-back birdies on the back. But the round could have been a lot better. Also, this day, I played with one of my good friends, whom I've introduced to golf. This was maybe is 4th or 5th time playing. He played horrible on the front something like 75 or so. I gave him a couple of tips while we waited to make the turn. Number 10... hits a decent drive, its a solid, but pulled hybrid 20 yards left of the green. chips to just short of the green, then chipped it in for par. His first par ever! Made his day, well for then at least. A few holes later, we come to a short par 3. I had just knocked one stiff, about 5 feet (I missed the birdie put). I gave a little chuckle, "That's how you play this hole" He said, "i'll see what I can do" Well, I'll be darned if he stuck on right over the flagstick and dang-near spun the ball back into the hole. And he made the putt for birdie. Unbelievable, to have his first par and first birdie in the same nine. Needless to say, we had some drinks to that! Anyways, shot +1 36 today, at Fendrich. So i'm happy, and can't wait to get back out there.

Can someone explain to me what is torque, and how it affects the clubhead during a golf swing. How much does it affect ballflight? Thanks

When I started playing, I was playing Callaway X12, which of course, are cast. I played with those until the end of last summer. Then I got a set of Mizuno MP30's. After hitting a bit on the range to get a feel for them, I went to the course. Man, was I impressed. Incredible feel. I really felt like I could hit any shot. Draws, fades, high, low, anything. After than round, I will never playing anything cast again. I will note, however, you do have to make good swings. If you are not at least pretty consistent, go with something more forgiving.

It looked good. Very clean, and taken care of. The seller was the second owner. Apparently the first owner tried to put a sightline on top. So the I may need to but some chip paint or something to cover that up. But no biggie. It should be in my bag by Wednesday!

Just bought me a new putter. Scotty Cameron Newport 2 TeI3. I found it on Ebay for $100. I'm really excited, yet a bit nervous. Can I putt any better with it. I think I will really like the copper insert, b/c I like to be a bit more aggressive with my putts. Anyways really excited!!!!

If you decide to try left hand low, here are a couple of suggestions 1. Position the ball a little farther towards your front foot. For me, I have a tendency to push putts and this helps prevent it. 2. Make sure your shoulders are square and parallel to the target line. About a month ago, I started putting extremely bad, couldn't make anything. I went to a Golf Galaxy and took a look on of those alignment mirrors and found that my shoulders were closed. I opened them up a bit, and it helped wonders. 3. Don't give up on it b/c it feels awkward. All new things feel a bit awkward at first.

Actually, I swear by it! When I first started, I couldn't putt to save my life, using a standard grip of course. I had a friend work with me a bit with my putting. Finally, he convinced me to try crosshanded. At the time, I had never broke 50 for 9 holes. I worked on it over the weekend before spring break, b/c it felt extremely awkward. Since we had the whole day, we got to play 18 holes. ON the first day, I shot 49-43. Two days later, I shot 44-41. The next week, I shot 38 to be medalist in a match. Since then, I have always used a crosshanded grip in different variations. Let me know if you have any questions or experiences about it. Hope it works for ya!

I currently use a 400cc Titleist 905T. I love it, but as always, I go through times when I just can't hit it straight. When I am going through a time like this, and I have an important round, I pull out my ole trusty Hawkeye VFT. The head is 300cc I believe. It is very small, but I hit the ball dead straight probably 80-90% of the time, and when it does curve, I normally find a fairway. I lose about 20 yards or so, but I'm in the fairway. I guess what i'm trying to say is you have to go with confidence. If you have confidence with a stick you find in the yard that you strapped a hunk of metal too with twine and bubble gum, use it. Look around a see what you can find. Demo different clubs.

I love playing in the middle of the day. It seems that I have the entire course to my self. I live in So. Indiana, and in the summer we have heat indices around 105-110. I keep about 5-6 good gloves in my bag at a time and rotate them every couple of holes. Also, I find ways to air them out, such as attaching them to something outside my golf bag if i'm walking, or to the golf cart if i'm riding. Another trick that I use is to have a small container of baby powder in my bag. When you start to feel uncomfortable, sprinkle a bit on your hands. That seems to do the trick for me. And as always bring plenty of water and gatorade to drink, and stay in the shade as much as possible, even if it means a bit longer of a walk.

Do you tend to blade shots? For the 56* SW, 13 is about right, but you have to take it into account on tight shots. I hit my 7I about 170yds and can hit my 54* SW 105 with a bit of backspin. I try to put a little more weight on my front side and pick the club up a little more on the backswing. Then, I make sure to hit down and through the ball. I keep an image of in my head of pinching the ball against the ground. Don't be scared to take a divot. As long as you hit the ball first, the divot is a good thing!

whats the most you've paid for a putter??
dkinser86 replied to kekoa's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I paid $35 for my Odyssey White Hot #5. I really like it, but I'm saving my money to get a Scotty. It will be a while, as I'm a college student and have more important things to spend money on. But putted with a Scotty during a match in high school. Got a ride with someone, got rear ended. So i ended up playing with a rental set from the course, and the pro let me have my pick of putters to use. :) I ended up shooting my best score for the year, mainly due to a great putting day. -
Since I began to play golf, I've always had a fluid, balanced swing. I believe the key to it is the part about being balance. I see a lot of higher handicappers falling over themselves when swinging. I swing hard, but you'll never see me falling down. Of course, you have to have proper sequencingomc backwing -> hands, shoulders hips to a full turn. Then, downswing ->hips, shoulders and hands. and be sure to follow through. The faster you go through this on the downswing, the farther you hit the ball.

New FT-5 seems real ... PHEW!
dkinser86 replied to Grogger31's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
How do you like this driver? I'm a bit skeptical about changing the weights in the head and changing shafts like the R7 and the I-Mix. -
I've never travelled with my golf clubs. But I've heard a lot of people and both Golf Digest and Golf Magazine suggest that you mail your clubs to your destination. I believe that there are services that do this for you. As for your question, I guess it would depend on what else you are packing. If you are packing more smallish bags for clothes, i think a soft case would be sufficient. Other than that, I would go with a hard case. You don't want to take any chances. Another idea that I just thought of, and maybe it would work. You might be able to get some sort of flat plastic box that could fit your clubs in it, w/o the bag. Maybe this box could fit in the bottom of the trunk. Might need a little ingenuity, but I think it could work. Good travels and be safe!

I would say, why mess with something that is working for you?
-
I hit the ball really high, almost too high I would say. I have been known to leave massive pitch marks. (I've actually completely plugged a ball into a green) With saying this, I don't actually spin the ball back. Its weird. I really want to be able to. I keep my grooves clean and all that, but to no avail. I use Vokey spin-milled wedges. They helped a bit. I don't really know what the problem is. I just ordered a USGA legal groove sharpener, so maybe that will help.
-
Just for clarification... Would it be illegal for me to purchase a groove sharpener, as stated earlier in this thread, for the intended purpose of using it to help with the worn grooves on my scoring clubs? I searched my rules book and the internet, but to no avail. So I am appealing to the wiser audience. thanks in advance.

New Shaft On My Driver - Worth it?
dkinser86 replied to mb22's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
What is the easiest way to find a clubmaker like this? I can't seem to find this type of service as far as getting help in choosing a shaft. -
Here's a situation where you can be creative. When I was younger, and didn't hit the ball as far as I do now, on longer par 3, I would tee the ball a bit higher take a club more open the face a bit, hitting down sharply on the and try to hit a high cut, with a 3/4 swing. After lots of practice with it, it worked out. During a match in an Invitational, I came to the par 3 and knocked to within a couple of feet and made the birdie. Ended up winning by a shot!

Companies you'll never buy clubs from
dkinser86 replied to FlopShotArtist's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I will buy from any company. I think you would be selling yourself short if you didn't. I mean, any company out there can have a break through in technology, that can make there clubs superior. I've played Callaways, Titleists, Nikes, Taylor Mades, Pings, Mizuno, Cobra, MacGregor, Adams, Wilsons and most others. If a company makes what I'm looking for, I will check them out. -
I voted that its occasionally good. I think it is good when teaching a person the game. I have begun teaching a few of my friends the game. If they would it one OB or in a hazard or something like that, I would just have them drop a ball near me and play on. But, I guess the qualifier for me is that I made sure to explain the actual rules of what they are suppose to do. When they got good enough to start actually hitting good shots, I made them play by the rules. I guess it depends on what you think makes people comeback. Is it the fun of being with friends? Is it hitting an incredible shot? For me, I am proudest when I have to punch out and scramble to make a par. That is an absolute incredible feeling to do that.

How do you put spin on the ball?
dkinser86 replied to King Cobra II's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
My thoughts exactly. I have the same problem. I am able to stop the ball on a dime with almost any club. I feel like I would be able to score better if I were able to spin the ball back a bit. Also, I believe at times putting spin on the ball is more conservative approach and will lead to better scores. For instance, hitting to a hole cut right behind a bunker. Right now, the play for me is to play it a bit long just in case i don't hit it so well. That mostly leaves a tricky downhill putt. If I were able to spin the ball back just a bit. It would leave a simpler uphill putt. I guess the problem with all of this thought is that, for me at least, being able to spin the ball would only improve my game by a couple of shots. I believe there is things that may improve one's game more. (chipping, putting, consistency, etc)
