Wedges... So many lofts, so many bounces...
elsito99 replied to MSB256's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I used to carry 48, 56, 60 and I am pretty good with distance control and taking something off. Then I replaced the 56 and 60 with 54 and 58, to have a bit stronger lofts which I like to keep it down a bit. Then bought the Wilson Ci7 that came with a 50 degree wedge, so now I have a perfect set 50, 54, 58. I can open the 58 up and basically turn into almost a 64 -
Very short backswing and very long forward swing towards the hole. One day at the practice green I started doing this to see if it helped. It did and a lot, I started draining everything inside 10-12. Then I saw the tip in GD by lefty, which he explains as 25% backswing and 75% forward swing or 3x the backswing. Shorter backswing will get your speed in check and have less time to twist the face. I used to do 50/50 (which I still do for VERYY long putts).

How do you decide on a putter???
elsito99 replied to elsito99's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Thanks for the responses. Forgot to add that I HAVE tested the putters at Edwin Watts. That is exactly the problem, I seem to putt very well with both. The other thing is that I don't need another putter, I put just fine, but as some of you stated I want to have the option to change between putters. As far as stroke goes, I am a straight back straight through but putt with a toe hang putter. I tried the face balanced Ping c67, but just couldn't go with the center shaft, EVEN if I putted very well. I think I may go with the B60 first and play it a few rounds and see. -
As the title states, how do you? I really like the Ping Karsten B60 and the Anser, and have no idea which one to get.

I agree the ranges don't work, you should tighten them up, huge difference between a 31 and a 36 (at least for me). Anyways, my best rounds are 30 probably 29 putts, worse around 38

From tour collection to Wilson Ci7's - First "REAL" set
elsito99 replied to elsito99's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Forgot to add, went from stiff to regulars, best decision ever. More distance but didn't lose control. -
From tour collection to Wilson Ci7's - First "REAL" set

Hi guys, hit the Ci7's yesterday. A few impressions. 1. They are beautiful irons, narrow soles which I love and thin to medium top line. 2. Long shafts and strong lofts, hitting one club more for each. Hit some PW about 135 when perfect, 120 when average, used to hit my pw 100. 3. Mishits are harsh, but not overly. Enough to be felt and know it was a BAD hit. 4. Sweetspot is flush, not soft as forged irons but a good solid flush feeling. 5. Nice trajectory and the flighted shafts work well, a bit too high on the gw and pw, but nice and high(er) on the 4 and 5 irons. 6. The gap wedge hit the sweet spot, as I play vokeys 54/58, the gw is 50 and pw 46. 7. For $260 "used" they can't be beat IMO. 8. Feels nice to have a set of irons designed and manufactured for a better game, instead of chinese knockoffs. Hopefully these will get my hcp to the mid teens. -
Nike IC putters....anyone using them?
elsito99 replied to Dub's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I wouldn't call them junk. I have spent about 4 hours total putting looking for my new putter. The IC blade was one of the best for me, along with the Ping Karsten. I agree the IC is expensive, especially with the Ping Karsten line at $89 -
I get you, because it happened to me last year prior to completing 2 years of playing. Shot 44/42 and the 42 could've been a 39 but ended double double after noticing my score. That day I was hitting everything crisp, don't know what happened, but since then I am back to 90-96 Maybe some lower hcp's can give some tips to be able to maintain the mojo throughout the round??

Second round ever. Par 3, 165 yards, water from 130 to 150. About 4 ft from the cup, downhill putt, very fast. Just touched it and it got there. The funny thing is when I started playing I really cut my irons, aimed perfectly left and it cut beautifully towards the center pin. Sad part is never made a birdie again on that hole (don't play it much though).

Hey, I have a similar story. On about Sept 06 had a nasty MTB fall and completely dislocated my left shoulder, it hurt more than a fractured pelvis... A few months later I started PT and reusing my shoulder. I believe in choices and that stuff happens for a reason, well... As a shoulder therapy someone recommended slow golf swings... Two years later, addicted to golf, I grooved a pretty decent swing on not being able to whack the ball with all my strength. Well fast forward to Jan 09, nasty fall again as I couldn't unclip from my bike. Dislocated again, but not completely. Took 3 weeks in a sling and started exercises. I did PT exercises (you can find them on Google as dislocated shoulder exercises), but when I really started to feel better was when I was able to do some gym exercises. Push up, pull ups, bench (careful, listen to your shoulder), ROWS. After 2 months of hitting the gym my shoulder is feeling very strong again. Try it with your shoulder, but always go slow. I started bench pressing 10 LBS dumbbells... I am up to 40 lb with each arm which was similar to preinjury. GL

From tour collection to Wilson Ci7's - First "REAL" set
elsito99 replied to elsito99's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Hopefully I won't notice anything but the lighter shaft, which will help with the shoulder pain. I will report back after the range and first round. -
Hi guys, I just bought a set online of Wilson Ci7 irons, based on hitting them of a mat but most importantly the great reviews all over the web. I have been playing some Tour Collection "forged" feel irons ($130 complete set) since I started in late 06, and was able to hit 86 one time with those. Mostly shoot 92-96 now (2 shoulder dislocations while MTBing have taken months from my golf game). My question is for people who have gone from chinese knockoffs to real irons, is the transition difficult? Was there a marked immediate improvement or was it a slow process. I obviously will hit the range prior to my first round, but any other tips you want to give me? I am really happy as this was the next step to take my game to the level I want, but there is a bit of doubt in me, that maybe I won't be able to hit them as I have grown accustomed to my chinese darlings?

Thanks for the response guys. I see opinions on both sides so I haven't actually made my mind yet. The Grom calls me for the cart function and several features. But the Titleist sure is better for walking, which I plan to do a lot. This morning I was setting on the Grom, now thinking it better I guess it is better to be comfortable walking, rather than the bag working on a cart. I think I will have to carry them both in the store and make my decision there. Thanks again.

I am about to buy new wedges , need help
elsito99 replied to 1dayIllBaPro's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Get Vokeys or Mizuno. I play vokeys 54/58 my buddy plays mizzu 53/58. Love them both, just a little more the vokeys. -
I am in good shape so I would assume it would be no problem for 18. 36 might be a different story, but even walking 36 is tough. Anyone here used the x86 or the GROM? The Titleist wins in weight and price - about $50 less Edge wins in features and cart use. mmmmm, will have to go to the Edwin Watts to check them out I guess.

Guys, I am looking to upgrade my chinese stand bag. Basically thinking about a 4 lb bag - Titleist x86 or similar vs Ogio Grom / Edge near 6 lbs. So my question for those who have the answer is: Are those 2 extra pounds really a killer? Would I notice them walking 18, 27, 36? My doubt comes from the fact that I live in Florida, where a lot of courses don't allow walking, so I want something that works reasonably well in the cart, ie. Grom or Edge. But I like to walk as much as I can, because I enjoy the game more, so any help I would appreciate it. TIA

I voted 210-230 because that is what I am getting now. Hopefully that will change as with other drivers I've had higher averages, and with my dad's R7 in Senior flex I had a 282 drive, my longest yet. I would be very happy with an AVERAGE of 250 of the tee, that would mean usually less than 150 to green on par 4's. At less than 150 I have a high probability of hitting the green so all is good. Above 170 my probability decreases rapidly so I need a few more yards from my drive.

Need Help on my Iron downgrade :(
elsito99 replied to eddie33081's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I've read in a lot of places how people that hit a lot of irons think the Wilson Ci7's are better than the ap2, x20, etc... And less than $400 new. I am planning on getting a set in a few weeks. I still play my first set, some forged chinese knockoffs, so hopefully the Ci7's get me on the low teens for a HCP as they will be much easier to hit. -
Driver: Low straight drives, sometimes slight fade which I prefer. Woods: Straight high Irons: Straight, and slight draws or fades when I need to avoid trouble. I used to be able to cut it on command, but can't cut it too much anymore. Wedge play: Depends on shot. Lately lots of wind so I am playing low trajectory one bounce shots. When no wind I go for the towering high drop dead shot.

Used Golf Balls...good deal or bad investment?
elsito99 replied to Dr_Fu_Manchu's topic in Golf Talk
If you like the Prov1 try the Precept U tri Tour. I find it to be very similar, with a soft feel from the putter. I used to buy used Prov1's but recently changed to the Precepts and to the E5's also. That said, I currently have a bag with like 50 rocks (top flites mostly) that I am going to start using at difficult courses to dispose of them. -
Best article I read was on Golf Magazine (I think), they tested swing speeds from 65 to 115 on 10 mph increments, basically 65 and 75 went the longest with 14 degrees of loft, then from 85 up to 115 the longest was the 11 degree driver. Very interesting article that opened my eyes and made me recognize I needed more loft on my driver. Hopefully this Titleist 11.5 will help me achieve my best launch angle, close to the recommended 14.

I have tried teeing it up like 5" in the air and can't get it to launch like I want. I attribute this to the head, as my father has the same shaft and I launch it pretty high with his TM R7 head.

1. Woods 2. Ogilvy 3. Villegas 4. Els 5. Kim

Everybody progresses at their own pace. For instance my father and I started at the same time, DEC 06. On my second round I made a birdie, and on my third round shot 95 on a 71.3/ 129 course. He shot 120's mostly. I hit it pretty good because I could control my "slice" naturally, so I didn't miss many FW's. Since then I started changing my swing to a more straight shot, and have shot basically 90's since then, one time an 86. Meanwhile my father kept practicing and now is shooting 90's consistently, so yeah, two different paths to the same location.
