yea i'm in michigan to. hoping to get out this weekend for my first round of the season. how was the condition of the course u played on? wet/soggy?
-
+10 isn't a bad score at all for your first outting of the year considering ur handicap and the course conditions. i'll be happy to shoot 90-95 on my first outting this year (which will hopefully be soon) i can definately agree with you and the whole "getting away" feeling while golfing. nothing else really matters when your out on the course, just "you vs. the course". prolly one of the many reasons i've fallen in love with this game. hope all goes well with the job situation and congrats on the baby on the way!

once again, i dont understand how so many people think its your job to help this guy find every single one of his lost golf balls. you have your own game to play/focus on. yes i understand that it is proper "etiquette" to help the other members in your group look for their shots, but honestly, you cant ignore your own game in order to constantly help pick up another guys slack all day....and when he is obviously slowing your group down by dragging you guys down to two holes behind, A LINE NEEDS TO BE DRAWN. isn't there supposed to be a time limit on time spent looking for a ball before it is declared lost anyways? im sorry if im sounding like a jerk or someone who doesnt play with any etiquette because im really not. i actually just got back from playing a round of 18 with my dad and two complete strangers that we got paired up with. i helped them find their shots, they helped me find mine, they helped me read greens, i helped them read greens and so on. yes i do play with etiquette, yes i am respectable to people when they are shooting/putting. and because this is my frist year golfing, im normally always the slowest player in my group, and when i know i am slowing the group down by driving in circle after circle looking for a golf ball, i simply stop the cart, and drop a ball and take a penalty stroke. i dont expect them to walk/drive over to me every single time i can't find a ball that "I" lost. and nobody should expect that. to me, thats being selfish.

i think its just a matter of the guy being a poor sport and being upset about shooting a poor round on day that he needed to shoot a decent one. i would have done the same exact thing you did. first off its a competition, your there to advance to the next round, not to babysit another guys golf ball every time he wacks a shot into the rough. you did more than enough, as did the rest of the guys in your group, by helping him to look for his other shots throughout the day. i understand that it is proper etiquette to help other people look for their balls, but when the guy is consistently hitting balls into the thick rough and hazards and your constantly waisting time helping him look for his ball, a line has to be drawn somewhere. you can not spend your whole round walking around with him looking for all of his lost shots. where is the line drawn? and maybe he way two holes behind because the group in front of him was playing faster and was two holes ahead....iacas, i dont understand how it is HIS fault that a member in his group is slowing the whole group down...

When i hit it right, I carry my driver a good 180-200 yds, but i ALWAYS get another 30-40 yards of roll on it. (i dont get a lot of height with my driver) And whenever i can manage to hit my 3w (actually my 18* hybrid) off the deck, its good for around 200 yds. my distances aren't that big, but i'm just a beginner. i guess im like most of the other people in this thread though and there is a good 30-40 yard differnence between my driver and 3w. and just like stated earlier, i think its better to start learning with a driver. the sooner the better. it might not really matter on the 300-350 yard par 4's but when you get to the longer par 4's and par 5's, your gunna love being able to get the extra 30-40 yards off the tee and getting yourself in closer range of the pin so that you can use those shorter, more controlled clubs for your second/third shots, instead of long irons.

im 20, been playing 3-4 months. i played college soccer for two years and this game is a complete 180* turn for me lol. i've really come to love the game though, and just can't get enough of it.

If your not a golfer don't read this joke...
cougar2588 replied to MellowYellow's topic in Golf Talk
THE SAME EXACT THING HAPPENED TO ME!! lol in one way, its unfortunate that we are broken up now, but in another way, at least i dont have to worry about getting put on a guilt trip on the golf course again anytime soon haha. -
haha you got me beat. im about +20 and a club membership. o well, one day....

If your not a golfer don't read this joke...
cougar2588 replied to MellowYellow's topic in Golf Talk
i would think that just by reading this joke you could at least learn something from it. whats wrong with putting your cell phone on silent/vibrate and just glancing at it every 3-4 holes to make sure you havnt missed an important call, or like this joke, something bad has happened....afterall, isn't that one of the main reasons you own a cell phone, so that people can reach you just in case something happens... -
What do You Think Is More Important? And Why?
cougar2588 replied to firefighter2711's topic in Golf Talk
i would say working on ur irons/woods/hybrids game is the most important (basically the clubs you will be using for ur second/third shots). i cant tell you how many strokes i have wasted because of duffed second/third shots. develop a consistent swing that you can use for each of your irons and one you can use for your woods/hybrids, and get to know what distance you use each club for. i just started golfing this year and i really locked down and focused on the stuff i just listed and i have lowered my handicap from 36+ to 26 in just the few months i have been golfing. im not saying it will work for you, but i kno in my case, it was my second/third shots that were killing me. now as im getting better, and im starting to count my putts for each round, im realizing that now i have to work on putting. so like some others have said, i think its most important for beginners to work on their iron game first, then worry about putting. -
congrats man. this is my first year golfing so i know how good it feels to break that 45 (bogey golf) mark too. my best so far is a 44 on the front nine, followed by a 48 though!!! i was so excited i was on track to break 90 that i blew it on the 17th hole!

i used to have the same problem, i used to always hit the ball 200-220 yds and always slightly sliced the ball so that all of my second shots i was hitting out of rough or inside of trees. i wont say that i just changed a few things to get better, there was actually a lot i had to change. make sure your ball position is good, make sure your not standing to far away from the ball or to close to the ball. really focus on turning your wrists and keeping the club face closed on your follow thru so that your not slicing the ball, BUT dont close it to much because then your gunna be dealing with a hook/shot to the left. make sure the ball is tee'd up high enough or else you wont be able to get under it enough and thats mostly where your low line drive shots come from. make sure your follow thru isnt too fast because your trying to kill the ball. keep your head down and dont lift up as you swing thru....and the list goes on and on lol my advice, and probably the best thing you can do, simply just go out to the range with your driver and really work/focus on it. dont just go out there to try and bomb balls down the range. go slow and steady. you cant hit the ball long and straight until you can hit it straight. so if all you can do is hit a the ball straight down the fairway 180 yds, its better then hitting the ball 220 yds into trouble. im still not very consistent because im a beginner like you are, but the more you play/practice the better you'll get. and if you see that you arent really improving that much, dont be ashamed to go get a lesson somewhere.

im with mellojoe on this one. this is my first year playing golf, and i also am not afraid to fluff my ball up when its burried in the ruff, or give myself a club length if im underneath or close to a tree. and im not ashamed to admit it, i give myself 2 mulligans per round of 18 (one on the front and one on the back). and guess what, if i duff a second or third shot that i know i should have hit better, ill take a ball out of my pocket and try again from the same spot. im not going to go golf and hack my way down everyhole, i know i wouldnt enjoy it. i will say that as i have gotten better this year, i have taken less and less mulligans and re-do's and im proud to say that. but im not ashamed to admit that i still take a few every round. and everyone that plays with me knows that i do take a few mulligans and re-do's and they dont get mad. they all understand that im just a beginner. its different though when your hiding it and trying to get away with it when no one is looking. and lastly, i think its completely rediculous to judge somebody by how they play a pick up game of golf. its a game, they are out there to have fun, we aren't pros. if your playing for money and they are still cheating, well thats a different story...

congrats. i wish i woulda started young and played golf in high school. make the most of it, you can learn a lot and who knows, if you get good enough, maybe even play in college.

even if you dont get into a savings account/money market account, im sure you can get into a CD (certificate of deposit) for around 3% at any one of your local banks.....and as far as i kno, those are insured up to 100,000 just like a savings account. but newayz, back on topic. i would go to the driving range 2-3 times a week and take the rest of the money you have left over and do a couple rounds of 9 holes 2-3 times a week, and if you look around in your area, im sure you can find really good rates for 18 holes around this time of the year. at least thats what i would do if i had $100 to spend on golf a week.
-
yea ill admit im sitting here waiting for it to come on. haha
-
normally if your going to be using your 7 iron from 150 yards out im guessing its cuz your trying to stick it on the green as close to the pin as possible. so the more loft you get the better since this will generally reduce the distance the ball rolls after it hits the ground, and of course that means your less likely to watch your ball roll right over the green and into the rough behind it. so to answer your question, no dont try to deloft the club for a few extra yards, stay with what you know you can do and build the rest of your game around that. just simply switch clubs if your further out.
-
congrats. my best so far is an even 100. ill be going out this weekend hoping to break 100. and then hopefully i can make a "i finally broke 100" thread too.
-
yep im in a similar situation with my friends. except that i just started this year too but am taking it a lot more seriously than they are. i made sure to keep my mouth shut when we went out together last week.
-
yea this is something i've been thinking about doing lately. especially since im a new golfer, and it seems like everytime i go out with other ppl, everyone always feels the need to make suggestions to me and blah blah blah the whole time we are on the course. to be honest, its nice that they are trying to help, but it gets to be pretty annoying sometimes.

Tiger Woods is to Golf what Pete Sampras was to Tennis
cougar2588 replied to golf_junkie27's topic in Golf Talk
i would have to agree that roger federer is almost equally as dominant as tiger woods is. federer may not win every tournarment, but he almost always advances to the finals or at least the semifinals (1st-4th place) just as tiger always finishes in the top 5 in nearly every tournament he enters. -
theres nothing wrong with looking for spare golf balls. i do it all the time when i go to the golf course. but then again, i only look for them WHILE im waiting for the ppl in front of me to get finished with their shots, or when there is nobody behind me. but i agree with you, it is rude to do while somebody is playing behind you. you could have asked to play through though, then maybe they woulda gotten the hint.
-
haha yea it is. ur like my twin halfway around the world.
-
well i just started golfing, and i try not to get to crazy with trying things that are out of the ordinary or too risky of shots to be taking because i dont want to be out there holding up the ppl im playing with or in front of. if i hit into the thick rough or behind some trees, ill just punch it out onto the fairway and go from there instead of trying to hit over/through the trees.

hey guys just wanted to introduce myself. my name is danny, im 20 years old. i live in michigan, im a full time student and i work full time for my parents. i just started getting into golf a few weeks ago. im using my dads old clubs. (he just bought a new set so im using his two year old set) Wilson Pro Staff Irons Titleist Driver Exact Stainless Steel Fairway Woods Dunlop Putter im starting out by trying to get out to the driving range about twice a week and then going to a local course at least once a week to golf 18 holes. as i get better/more comfortable, ill eventually start going to the driving range less and just going to golf 9 holes somewhere instead. as of now, my avg. isnt to hot. i've gone out the last two weeks and shot a 115 and a 111. hopefully i can dip into the low 100's in the next few weeks.
