Anyone carrying a 3 iron just for tee shots?
cwcaesar replied to Stacey_E's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I recently got rid of some hybrids when I got my new irons. I could hit my 4 hybrid as far as I could a 3 iron, maybe further. And I hit my 3 hybrid almost as far as my 3 wood. I would think that maybe a 2 or 3 hybrid would be a good club for you. I think that you could get the extra distance that you are looking for as well as some forgiveness and consistency over a 3 iron. -
I would like to look through the book and get what information that I could out of it. I don't think the straight back-straight through method sounds very natural to me. I am more of the Stan Utley school (open-square-closed). However, I would like to own this book just for all of the extra information that is contained.

Anyone carrying a 3 iron just for tee shots?

I hit my 3 iron about 200-210 yards. I normally don't pull it on par 4's, but I do hit it off the tee as there are a couple of long par threes at a local course. Most of the use is out of the fairway on Par 5's, or to punch under trees. The three is a very versatile club in my bag. I have even considered getting a 2 iron, but I can't decide which club to drop if I did. -
I have seen some really extensive collections on puttertalk.com, but I am not interested in collecting these things. I might get a cool one some day that catches my eye, but I am not paying some crazy price for it.

Scotty Cameron Studio Select
cwcaesar replied to whip_it_out's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I love mine. I think it looks amazing. And if you want to alter it a bit then you can send it into the Studio shop and have some customization work done, including putting your name on it or adding some more weight. I wasn't a big Cameron fan till this putter came out. Very solid and looks great. I love the three big red Cherry Bombs! Get one, you won't regret it. -
Middle of the fairway, going for the green... But how???
cwcaesar replied to FortAsel's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I would try to fade a 4 iron in there. That would be the safe play for me. -
Sounds to me like you are topping the ball. It may be getting some air as the ball is bouncing off of the turf and rolling a bit. First of, just relax. You may be putting extra pressure on yourself as you know that tryouts are soon. Concentrate on keeping your head down. When I start looking to see the ball I start hitting thin shots. You could also practice some chipping. A chip is just a shorter version of the full swing. If you are hitting your chips well, then progress to a longer swing until you reach a full swing. Just relax though, and good luck in your tryouts.

Corded grip suggestions appreciated....

The Winn PCI have a nice feel to them. When I re-grip next year they will be on my short list. -
The Mizuno MP-57 is a great players iron that has a good amount of forgiveness to it. The Sand Trap has done a really nice review on the irons, and actually convinced me to give them a try. The players irons gave me the feedback that I needed to be able to make swing corrections and I am now a much better and more consistent golfer. With a players iron you will get consistent trajectories, which has helped me control distance and ball flight. If you think that you can hit a players iron and have the time and patience to work through a few hand stingings, then I say that you should get them. Good luck with your purchase and let us know what you choose to get.

More loft will create more spin all else being equal: same type of wedge, same grooves, contact on the same part of the club face, same ball, same swing, etc. However, I think that the difference in spin between those two lofts is fairly minimal, if you can even tell at all. I can spin all my wedges well, if I have a good lie. I just pick a different wedge for the amount of carry and trajectory that I need.

Being treated to a new driver and 3 wood.

You also forgot the Mizuno MP-600. For me it performed the best. Tight dispersion, accurate, and long. -
I like Phil and I can't help but pull for him to come out of that slump. That being said, he has not shown me anything and I don't see this as his week.

I took over a year off from the time my wife was seven months pregnant till the baby was 11 months old. I think it has helped my golf game so much. It has helped me put everything into perspective. My family comes first for me, then my education, and golf is somewhere further down the list. I play the game more with my mind now then before. I do have some new irons and wedges that have helped me with my swing, but the fact that I play the game smarter now, don't get angry on the course, and just relax and enjoy the few hours of quiet time, has helped tremendously. My 13 month old daughter actually helps me with my putting. I will putt around in the living room and she will chase the balls around and carry them off to hide them. She has a blast with it, and it is some good practice for me. For years I played to a 14 to 18 handicap, and now it is down in the single digits. God bless the little children!

The Bettinardi putters that I tried all felt good, but a little light. I prefer a heavy putter and the Scotty Cameron Studio Select has interchangeable weights so that was an important factor for me. Otherwise, I would have probably gone with a Bettinardi or a Yes.

I have tried putting without a glove on and I don't care too much for it. I have putted for 15 years with a glove on and I guess I am just used to the feel. Besides, I don't use my hands to putt, I use my shoulders. If I take the glove off I tend to get a little handsy with the stroke. When I go in to the golf store to try putters I bring my glove and a sleeve of Pro V1's along. I want to know what it is going to be like when I actually get out on the course. The balls that the stores use on their putting greens are not the softest that I have ever used. So, I always use a glove while putting.

No, the three iron came with the set. $850 at ProGolf Discount.

I got rid of my hybrids when I bought the MP-57 irons. I just love hitting a 3 iron again. It is such a boost of confidence for me to be able to aim at the green from 200 yards out. I only wish that the 57's offered a 2 iron, I might just drop the 3 wood.

I use the Mizuno MP-R wedges and I love them. They are forged and have a nice soft feel to them. I really like that Black Nickel finish, too.

I just shipped a putter from Tennessee to California by UPS. Cost was $14.99 and the package was insured for $300.

I straightened out my drives when I went to a stiffer shaft. I don't know that it was all about the stiffness. I think that it was a combination of the stiffness and the decrease in torque. I still can't hit a flimsy shafted Wal-Mart driver straight, always a power fade to a slice. But I can hit a nice draw with my driver. It is an extra stiff. My swing speed doesn't warrant the extra stiff, but I really like the solid feel and the lower torque.

Mizuno MP 600 Discuss Pro's and Con's here please
cwcaesar replied to King Cobra II's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I demoed this driver last week for the second time and I absolutely love it! At the same time I hit my own driver, a Tour Burner TP, and the MX-560. I didn't like the sound of the MX-560 (kinda like the Sumo). The tour Burner TP was nice but I couldn't justify the $600 price tag. Also, it was not as long or as accurate as the MP-600. The MP-600 was the most accurate driver that I have ever hit. I was no more than 10 yards off line with it. I was pounding nice long draws with this club. I normally hit the ball 270 or so. I was hitting the MP-600 about 285 or more, with a couple over 300. This was with the weights in the neutral position. I wanted to bring my ball flight down and moving the weights was perfect for it as I brought my ball flight down 1.5*. I really want to get this club. The price at Edwin Watts was $399 If you have a consistent swing then you can benefit from the adjustable weights. This club is not the most forgiving, or the longest, but it is a rock solid performer. If you want forgiveness then you may want to try the MX-560. -
That looks like a cool towel, and I already wanted the brush after I read the review. I will be ordering the package soon!

I recommend that you get fitted for your irons. A good fitting will ensure that you will have the right irons for your swing. And test out several sets, you will enjoy the process.
