  1. I took a lesson from a highly recommened pro locally. I was nervous going as I was waiting for him to pick apart my stance, straightness of back, angle etc etc etc. The lesson was spectacular. He broke the swing down for me to a couple pieces. My body turn, wrist hinge and setting my triangle. Simple lesson but my shots and confidence have greatly improved! He also touched briefly on course strategy. I don't have a long ball and he wants me to not worry about it. To focus on playing what I can make safely etc. Can't wait for my round tomorrow to try it out. Anyone who hasn't taken a lesson, do it soon. Before you do, research the pros you have available.
  2. Does anyone use or know where I can find a good pocket shot log? I'd like to start taking better notes of my rounds. I had come across one long ago, but can't remember where I found it. Basically I'd like to track each shot on each hole, what club was used, how that shot performed, how many putts etc. If no one knows of one I'll make one in excel, but it's a beautiful Staurday here and I thought I'd stay off the computer for as long as I could :)
  3. If you don't get fit, at least take the opportunity to hit some different driver/shaft/loft combinations. I just purchased a new driver and left with a totally different driver than I intended to.
  4. For a high handicapper definitely the Sumo. I just bought mine and I'm in loooove with it. Consistent distance and straight.
  5. Last trip was a new driver. I was about to leave without anything, but decided to take a try hitting some clubs. Now I'm in love with a Nike driver and can't wait to try it out.
  6. I've liked Callaway irons. I had never really hit anything by Nike. I stopped by Golftown today in search of a new driver. I hit a few different ones when the kid brought me a Nike. WOW.
  7. Does anyone here change their grips themselves? If so, anyone use an air compressor to do it? I ordered new grips and am going to put them on myself. I know it can be done with air and was curious if anyone has done it and how they liked it.
  8. Sand wedge and nothing but. I made chipping practice a priority this year in my backyard and that's the club I use. I just feel comfortable with it when chipping.
  9. On a different note, did anyone else see the news story about the bookie who lost approx. $2 million because he paid out early? He paid those out the winnings to those who back Tiger after the 3rd round and before the 4th round started.
  10. You stole my post about sumo wrestlers!
  11. $100, which if it works well is nothing too shabby for a putter. Now I just want to buy it more because I can't have or see it! Maybe it's all a marketing ploy to get me to buy it.
  12. This is an old thread, but it came up when I searched. I just bought some Inno grips online and am going to see what they're like. I went searching for grips as my clubs are getting cut down soon. I found a set I liked and they were Inno, so I ordered them. Not sure if anyone else has tried them but I'll post some thoughts once I get and install them. I'm hesitantly hopeful. They didnt cost much for all 13, but the reviews I could find were promising.
  13. Ready for the pictures? I don't have any :) She didnt bring it Friday as her husband had sold the one she was bringing me. She plans to bring me one sometime this week after he makes another. I'll blame my putting this weekend on being distracted over the putter :)
  14. Shorts - I gotta do it. Outside of work, a wedding or a funeral in the summer you will not find me in pants. Towel Clipped to Belt - I've never ever seen this. Score Clicker - No, and I've only golfed with one person who did. It was a watch style that he had on. I didn't mind as his shot count was even higher than my own. During the round ( great guy, great sense of humor so it was all in good fun ) on the 14th hole he found himself in a sandtrap in front of the green with a very steep wall in his way from getting out. I was waiting by the green to putt as was our third. He would swing, stop, click, swing, stop, click, etc etc. By the 5th or 6th shot we all burst out laughing from his routine/sound effects. Novlety Ian Poulter Headcover -Nope and never. Sponge Ball cleaner / Club Brush - I do have a brush, though I don't always leave it on. Black Golf Glove - Not for me, but whatever floats your boat. Coloured Golf Balls I have a few I found on the course. I use em with the kids, and when I practice at an empty field near by ( surprising well kept and cut I might add ) Ball Monogrammer - Nope, althought wife did order me some with kids names on them for Father's day last year. Those are long gone tho :) Ball Retreiver -Never had one. If it's in the water, it's in the water. Plastic castle / Fixed Height Tees - Not for me. When I started golfing a guy I went with used these and I thought they must have been great because he was "good". Now that I am improving ( and beat him during our only round this year ) he is no longer "good" and I have no desire to use these tees.
  15. No, unfortunately she's not bringing it in until Friday.
  16. At work today one of my employees came up to me and asked me if I was golfing this weekend. I replied yes, and she then said she had something for me to try. Apparently her husband who is retired now, has made a putter and has made replicas of it and sold them around the city. Not only that, but the putter has supposedly been approved. Now out of curiousity, does anyone know whats involved in getting a club approved by USGA for use? Regardless I'm going to try the putter out because curiousity has me now ( especially since the only way she could describe it was "weird looking" ) It just got me more thinking about what exactly is involved in getted a putter approved, and also if many other people have come across anything similar ( homemade clubs )
  17. So as the season here gets closer to it's end ( at least in Canada ) I've started to comtemplate purchasing new irons. I figure I might as well take advantage of the season end opportunities ( demo days, other golfers unloading clubs etc ) I've been golfing with a set of '02 Big Berthas. They've been good to me and my scores have dropped considerably, ( from 120's and higher to 100's and some 90's ) but I feel it's time to move on from them and get a club that isnt quite so forgiving. Don't get me wrong, I'm not looking to make the move to blades as is so frequently discussed. I'm just looking at some options that will still afford me some forgiveness, but allow me to work the ball a little more and give some feedback on shots so I can further develop as a golfer. Any suggestions out there? Anyone else made a similar jump and if so what did you use?
  18. Nike ones right now and Callaway IX, but used the HX this year as well.
  19. I wouldnt be as frustrated if there was some spin, but there is none at all. I just bought these clubs used this year from a friend and I'm not sure how much he's used them. They are still in great shape. I agree with the swing part, and I've worked in a large part this year on ensuring I am hitting down on the ball. Thanks for the replies, I was just curious how much the forgiveness of these clubs would actually be hurting me when it comes to short game control.
  20. I have suffered from this same problem while I've been learning the game. The two things that helped me the most were a proper grip and lining up with my practice swings. I had always read differing ideas on where the ball should be placed in the stance etc. I started using my practice swing and watching where the club hit the ground to line up where I placed the ball in my stance. The improvement was great. After doing that for a few weeks, I started to learn where I wanted to place the ball with the different clubs. I'm sure part of it is mental as well, because I now have a confidence of where I place the ball in my stance and how it is going to affect my shot.
  21. I think that the $$ is a minor detail. Anyone with a great love for the game could understand the justification in paying to play anyone of these courses. I've already set goals to play a few, Pebble Beach and St. Andrews being two of them.
  22. I've been working on my short game all year and made some great success. The ball lands on my intended target spot more often than not which has given me a great confidence around the green. The one problem I still have is ball spin. The course I play regularly has the best greens in the area ( last stimp rating was 11 ) and they are fairly fast. As my ball hits it's intended target spot I am finding it difficult to impart any spin at all, so it rolls and rolls. I am currently playing the wedges out of my '02 Big Bertha set. Would different wedges ( non cavity backs ) help me impart the spin better or am I missing something in my swing? Is the ball going to make a difference? ( I play mostly Callaways and Nikes of various kinds ) I probably lose 10 strokes a round because my ball has no spin and I can't get it to stick around.
  23. We dont have anywhere here that well set up, and I already have the clubs. I've been playing them all year and want to get them fit now. From what research I've done there is really only 1 place in town to take them too ( pro shop at the local PandP course ) Apparently through word of mouth they are the best in town. The other option I have is a generic sports store, and after the job they did last winter sharpening my son's hockey skates Im VERY afraid to let them start cutting and bending a golf club.
  24. So I'm thinking of having my clubs fitted for myself. I'm a short golfer ( 5'4" ) with long arms ( less than 29" ) from wrist to floor. Im inexperienced with this so I lack a good understanding in choosing a good fitter and following or not following his advice. What should I be looking to have done? Cut them down? Adjust the lie? Get both done? Any advice on how these clubs should be adjusted for me is appreciated!
  25. For me I can really only vote for Callaway right now. When I started golfing I picked up a cheap set of Dunlops. After that I managed to get a great second hand deal on '02 Bertha Irons and an S2H2 3 wood. They've worked for me, and although I have hit other clubs, I haven't hit any others enough to form an opinion to stray me away from mine. I'm considering a change this winter for next spring, so between now and then I'll see if my opinion changes.
