  1. I have played Marion and think it will be a great venue. It will teach many viewers how much fun it is to see a course that forces a players to really be able to play golf. Too many of the US tournaments are played on "bomb, gouge and putt" courses. That's why I love the Open Championship. The links courses require a much more complete set of skills. Its not just about being able to blast it 300 yards and putt.
  2. I have it from a mutual friend that Tiger doesn't like Vijay. He has been mad ever since Vijay reprimanded Tiger for leaving Fuzzy twisting in the wind after making that dumb comment at the Masters. Even the young Eldrick didn't like being spanked in public. Tiger was shocked that anyone would have the guts to dress him down.
  3. I believe the expression should be "Mongo like candy". Line by Alex Karas playing Mongo in "Blazing Saddles".
  4. Tiger is great -- maybe the greatest, but the pudgy boy Jack was still a better athlete. As for ripping it farther, if jack used the same equipment in his prime, it would take Tiger Driver-wedge to get close.
  5. Here are some standards: 10 BEST GOLF CADDY REPLIES GOLFER: "Think I'm going to drown myself in the lake." CADDY: "Think you can keep your head down that long?" GOLFER: "I'd move heaven and earth to break 100 on this course." CADDY: "Try heaven, you've already moved the earth." GOLFER: "Do you think my game is improving?" CADDY: "Yes sir, you miss the ball much closer now." GOLFER: "Do you think I can get there with a 5 iron?" CADDY: "Eventually." GOLFER: "You've got to be the worst caddy in the world." CADDY: "I don't think so sir. That would be too much of a coincidence." GOLFER: "Please stop checking your watch all the time. It's too much of a distraction." CADDY: "It's not a watch sir, it's a compass." GOLFER: "How do you like my game?" CADDY: "Very good sir, but personally, I prefer golf." GOLFER: "Do you think it's a sin to play on Sunday?" CADDY: "The way you play, sir, it's a sin on any day." GOLFER: "This is the worst course I've ever played on." CADDY: "This isn't the golf course. We left that an hour ago." #1 Best Caddy Comment: GOLFER: "That can't be my ball, it's too old." CADDY: "It's been a long time since we teed off, sir." A couple actual experiences I've had should also be up there. My partner hit a bad tee shot on the first hole the morninig of our practice round at Lahinch after we had been badly over-served the night before. I suggested that he hit another. Walking down the fairaway he said "Gee in the States we call that a Mulligan. What do you call it here in Ireland?" the caddy never cracked a smile and simply replied "we call that lyin' three Laddie". Later the same day, at Doonbeg, my drive ran through the fairway into the high grass. My caddy said "too bad yer in the love grass". I mentioned that we call it fescue at home and asked why they call it "love grass". "Cuz now yer F*@ked" he replied.
  6. Here it is at Pelzgolf.com http://www.pelzgolf.com/proshop/pros...oshopid=ptutor
  7. I could never get use to hovering my woods and irons but I always hover my putter on windy days or on steeply sloped greens. If the balls moves, there is no penalty because you have not "addressed" the ball.
  8. Mine would be people who make 60 full divots on the driving range when hitting a bucket of 60 balls rather than just placing each ball on the back edge of the previous divot. I also don't understand why many men never seem to learn to take off their hats when they enter the clubhouse or grill room. I was next to a guy who the other day who seemed shocked when the bartender told him she would be happy to serve him as soon as he removed his hat. He thought she was crazy and I thought his parents must have done a lousy job when he was a child.
  9. Not to ground their putters behind the ball on windy days. Ryan Palmer may lose today's tounament and his card because his ball moved after he addressed it. He also seemed to think that by walking away he "unaddressed it". If your livelihood depended on it wouldn't you learn the rules? Some players complain about the rule when there is such a simple remedy. Nicklaus never suffered such a penalty because he knew enough not to ground his putter.
  10. Over a half mile with my driver. I was playing during the winter with a friend. I bet him a six-pack that I could drive the ball over 400 yards from an elevated tee at our home course. After he accepted the bet, I aimed far right across a great salt pond (think large lake) that was frozen solid and we watched as it skipped across the ice out of sight.
  11. In which would you rather play? It would be a very tough call for me. Pebble has more "A" list player and celebrities (although the quality of celebs has certainly fallen off in recent years). Pebble and Spyglass are great courses (probably in my top 50 in the world) and Poppy Hills is very good. It also gets more media attention. Dunhill has even better courses the Old and Kingsbarns are in my top ten, maybe even top five, and Carnoustie is avery fine links. It has better pubs and a bit more camraderie. As strange as it sounds, it also has better weather than pebble during rainy season. Links are also more fun to play in any weather. A few years ago I would have said Pebble, but now I think I would go with The Dunhill.
  12. After 15 years it is time to replace my Zero Restriction rain suit. When I play in Europe I notice that Galvin Green has become the preferred brand. They certainly make sharper looking gear but at a higher price. Anyone have an opinion on which is better?
  13. You may be thinking of the Bayonet and Black courses. They are no longer operated by the military, but they still offer discounts to active and possibly retired servicemen. Very reasonable green fees. They are great courses. The Pros from Pebble and Spyglass told me that is where they and their staffs like to play when they get time off.
  14. Although Fishers is only a couple miles off the CT and RI coasts, it is actually NY. There is an old story that CT traded Fishers Island for Greenwich, CT in a border dispute a couple hundred years ago. I would have to go with Cypress over Pebble. Cypress is in my top two in the US (along with Pine Valley). I love Pebble, but it wouldn't make my top 20 in the world.
  15. I recommend playing the Cashen Course on the same day as the Old. they give you a significant price break if you play both. Some people will tell you that the Cashen isn't great but I think it would be considered one of the best if it was anywhere other than next to the Old. It is hard, but is a great test and visually stunning. I also agree that it is worth paying the fee and playing Doonbeg on your way to Lahinch. You only live once...
  16. No neither of them do.
  17. I faced the same issue and opted to drop the 56 and 60 in favor of a 58. It was a good decision for me and is what I see many pros and Stan Utley doing.
  18. Kilkee is between Ballybunion and Lahinch has great views and is very inexpensive. Also if you play the Cashen on the same day as the Old at Ballybunion, you pay a significant discount.
  19. I would agree with Kittansett. If you like Winnapaug, you should play Misquamicut. I would put all 18 holes ahead of any of Winnapaug's.
  20. I was there a couple months ago. I was taking my daughter to visit colleges so I only had time to play two courses, Portmarnock and Royal Dublin. Portmarnock was great and Royal Dublin was worth playing for the history (and because I am tring to play all 48 links courses in Ireland).
  21. I have always been a notoriously poor chipper and putter. I went to Pelz's school and only got worse. A couple months ago I bought Utley's Short Game and Putting books (and a Scotty Cameron Studio Select 1.5 33" to replace my two-ball). After reading both books and a little bit of practice, I now consider myself an excellent putter and decent short game and sand player. My partner and I won our flight in a member guest this past weekend and all of our oppenents remarked what a good putter I am (I used to hope for two putts and settle for three putts). I hope it lasts. Straight back and straight through just wasn't for me. I just couldn't consistently keep my backstroke on line.
