    the term gamed

Bobby Jones used to reprimand Masters announcers for saying that a player "hit" a shot or "hit" a four iron. His contention was that you "play" a shot and "play" a four iron.

    the term gamed

Saying someone gamed the system is acceptable, saying someone games a driver is not.
  3. Your Lady MacBeth reference certainly beats my Kato Kaelin reference. Don't even get me started on "like" vs. "as".
  4. irregardless, I'm sure the Kardashian sisters would agree with you. Maybe even Kato Kaelin.
  5. Nope. I got it right. Although it is so commonly misused that some of the "new" dictionaries are offering the incorrect definition as an alternate.
  6. A few of my favorites that are often misused: Nauseated = feeling sick Nauseous = making people sick How often do you hear people say they "are nauseous". It may be true but I doubt that is what they mean. Iterate = repeat reiterate = re-repeat
  7. First off. My home course starts play at 8:00am. A friend and I play 18 holes in a comfortable 2:15 with out rushing or waiting and we are home by 10:30 with the rest of the day ahead of us. My second favorite is finishing at twilight.
  8. Top 12 courses in the US that end with a par three. Misquamicut should be in the top three http://theaposition.com/robertfagan/golf/courses-and-travel/4902/dozen-best-american-golf-courses-finishing-with-a-par-three
  9. Yes I am aware of that but I find that the correlation between handicap ranking and difficulty tends to be fairly strong. To say it has little to do with it or is only marginal seems like a bit of an overstatement in my experience.
  10. The finish at Winged Foot may have had more to do with the pressure that the difficulty of 18. 18 is the number 8 stroke hole. Monty and the other contenders (Phil etc) just chocked down the stretch. I would be interested in the data but I would guess that pars threes are the most difficult for the pros. The only thing I don't like about having 18 as the hardest hole is that someone will almost always be getting or giving a shot on the final hole in a net match.
  11. Good article by John Paul Newport http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10000872396390444508504577595520292184822.html
  12. agreed/ The President's Cup will never be as compelling as the Ryder Cup, but a mediocre match play event is always far more interesting that a good stroke play event. It is just too bad that television has made the anomaly of stroke play the norm.
  13. The Solheim incident was somewhat different. Tiger was playing from his previous spot. In the SC, the Europeans were using the option of going to the opposite margin of the hazard equidistant to the hole and were mistakenly allowed to take the ball back keeping that spot between them and the hole.
  14. If you believe that, I envy you.
  15. No way the PGA would have penalized him five years ago. I guess the Tiger teflon has finally been cracked. Probably good for the game that he is now held to the same rules.
  16. I have one of their rain jackets and it is the best waterproof I have ever had. I believe I paid the same for it. My second favorite brand is Zero Restriction.
  17. Agreed, but provisional would not have been an option in the scenario that started this thread (ball in water hazard over the green) unless there was a local rule specifically allowing it.
  18. There are three options for unplayable. Play from the previous spot (does not need to be in the bunker), Within two club lengths no nearer the hole (must stay in the bunker), or as far back in the bunker as you like keeping the spot where the ball came to rest between you and the hole.
  19. it is certainly allowed and occasionally the best option
  20. It may just be from gripping too tight. Try relaxing your grip.
  21. As long as were on this rant, Stanford educated Tiger said that he was "playing good" until his back started to hurt. About half the players they interview say they played good but Tiger knows better.
  22. This would rarely be an issue if people only used the "passing lane" for passing and then got back into the right lane. I see far too many people who use the left lane as a travel lane and hold up traffic. Get left to pass, and then get back in the right lane. People seem to think if they are going the speed limit in the left lane that they have a right to stay there. It is not your job to block the left lane to keep others from speeding.
  23. Here in Rhode Island submarine sandwiches are called "grinders". They go well with a "cabinet" (aka milkshake).
  24. I'm a bit late with this one. Played in a tournament last month in St Andrews that ended on a Sunday on the Old Course. I hit my second 95 yard second shot on 18 to about 10 feet and made the birdie putt in front a large crowd. I celebrated with a nice Pimms Cup in the trophy room of the R&A; clubhouse. BTW we lost anyway.
  25. While I agree that there are probably many US players who would be just as happy winning the Masters or US Open as The Open, I doubt that anyone anywhere would be as happy winning the PGA.
