Seeking advice for new bag setup
dbrock504 replied to jrode's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I'm a wee bit confused. With all due respect, you have a Walmart set of clubs and you don't know what you need other than a driver, putter and iron set (4-AW) and you shoot in the low 90's? I'm not judging you by your equipment, but you seem to have an lack of knowledge of the game based on this post. Do you REALLY shoot in the low 90's? If you do, I have certain recommendations. If you don't, I have certain recommendations. I find it too common people not counting strokes properly and misjudging their true score. Just ask my dad. He thinks he shoots in the low 90's with me, but when we play together, he plays 110+ every time. He doesn't count his drops, foot wedges, OB, lost balls, etc. I'm not trying to criticize you, rather get the REAL truth out. It would really help if you could list your clubs with your distances to see if you have any "gaps" you can fill by adding a club. Also, do you consider your short game, or long game to be your weakest link? In other words, could you benefit more from adding a lob wedge, or a 3 wood? -
Graffaloy ProLaunch on a Callaway RAZR X Black?
dbrock504 replied to MarshallRaynor's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Well I can tell you that after I put in a low torque shaft in, it was the only club in bag that would severely slice. Everyone has their own opinions on what truly matters, but I can tell you those things do matter. However, as Jakester has indicated, if you aren't making proper contact, no equipment will fix that. -
Graffaloy ProLaunch on a Callaway RAZR X Black?

I completely understand. That is why I put the shaft in. I was told I needed a stiff shaft instead of the regular that was in it (I had the club for a while). I got an older model, not the Axis one that you have listed there. I got the Graffaloy ProLaunch Platinum. As @WUTiger mentioned in another post: When you are considering a new shaft, consider weight and other factors like torque (amount of twisting), flexpoint (where shaft bends - this finetunes ball height), and tip profile (soft to stiff). Also, factor in your transition (how quickly you start your downswing). The ProLaunch Platinum that I put in my G10 was a mid flight- low torque shaft. It just wasn't right... The ball flight was strange (launched correctly but no roll out) and I had a hard time getting the face of the club square on impact because there was a stiff tip profile and didn't allow the club head to "twist". I either hit straight, or hook every one of my clubs in my bag except the G10. Wicked slice. I recommend you go get fit to see what you need as far as specs go, and then go find the right shaft. Some argue the right shaft is the most important part of the club. It allows for proper flight, distance, roll, and more. Be careful before you just start putting shafts in your club. It's expensive and it's time consuming trying to get used to something that isn't right for you. Believe me... I sold the G10 and got a Callaway X Hot 9.5* Stiff flex and it is a thing of beauty. Mid flight, mid torque. -
I'd Be Scratch with a Better Mental Game

Well said. My dad is a 40 hcp (112 avg) and I complement (and harp on) him every time he has a great shot (which only happens a hand full of times all day) and he seems to really enjoy the game. If I sat there are told him how many times he 3 putts or chips from one side to the other, all it would do is discourage him from playing. -
My friend has hands just like you with short, fat, stubby fingers and he plays with midsize grips. I have long boney fingers, and I too play with midsize grips. Experiment with it. Go get a cheap midsize grip and slap it on a 7 iron. If you like it, you know to do all your clubs. Best answer I can give... You seem to have a very strong grip with your dominant hand. Maybe give this a look and try it out. It might help. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDNQ_hwQc3w

Graffaloy ProLaunch on a Callaway RAZR X Black?
dbrock504 replied to MarshallRaynor's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I put this shaft in a Ping G10. JUNK After I used it for 6 months and absolutely hated it, I went to the Stiff Aldila VS. Much better. Remember: you get what you pay for -
Yes sir, I understand that last sentence, thanks. I was more or less looking for a cheaper option, so I was considering the NXT Tour. Which ball other than the V1/V1x would you prefer or recommend? I think I am going to give the NXT Tour a shot. I have found that although I prefer the feel of a 2 piece ball, a 3 piece performs better with my swing speed and I don't seem to get so much side spin from a 3 piece. Thank you for your feedback
-
When I first started, I used the cheapest balls I could find (usually in onion sacks). Once I got a little better, I played Noodle's for about a year or so. After I got into the 90's, I started using $20 balls (Nike PD Soft, Callawat Hex Diablo, Srixon Soft Feel). Now I'm ready to get into the 80's and looking for a better ball. Last weekend, I played my Nike PD Soft's for the front 9. On hole 10, I found 2 Pro V1's and 1 Pro V1x. I was so excited! I have never played with a $4 ball before haha. Guess what? They were amazing. Only lost one of those balls on the back 9 (Pro V1 on the 18th trying to make the green over a lake at 220 with a 3 hybrid. Hooked it. Tried it again with a Pinnacle Gold, made the fringe). Hit 6/7 fairways (3/6 went +275), 3 GIR and 17 putts and scored a 42. The "drop and stop" really did as advertised; I actually got a ton of backspin out of a bunker! I am officially hooked onto a Titleist ball. My findings on those 9 holes: I felt as if the Pro V1x had a lower ball flight off of my clubs, but went straighter off the tee box. Not only did it seem to go straighter and a bit longer, but the green side spin was better than the Pro V1 for me. I did not care for the hard feel, however. The Pro V1 had an exceptional feel on contact and I found the ball flight to be much more favorable. The green side spin was good and I liked it putting better as well. I did have more action on my long irons and driver though and I did not care for that. Now the real question: What is the difference between all of the models they offer? I know there was a thread on the difference between the Pro V1 and the Pro V1x, but I was meaning to compare those to their other options (NXT Tour, NXT Tour S, Velocity, DT SoLo). The reason I ask this is because it seems every one of their balls offer "comanding feel, outstanding distance, consistent flight, very soft feel, long lasting durability". Well, which is better for what? What have you experienced between these models? My swing speed is 107 avg with the driver, 8 iron goes 150. Driver goes 275+, 3 wood goes 250-275. Thanks P.S. Don't just say things like "DT SoLo is a 2 piece ball where the Pro V1 is a 3 piece and the V1x is a 4 piece." Explain how that will differ in performance.

Smart Marketing from Callaway
dbrock504 replied to dbrock504's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Yes, they are offering a pure distance ball (X Hot2+) and their more affordable option for the slow swing speed with the Supersoft. I was pointing at the high end options they have. People spend $45-50/dozen for a Pro V1/Pro V1x, Srixon Z Star, Nike RZN, Bridgestone b-330s, Taylormade Tour Preferred, etc. With all of these high end choices, what ball is best for me? Callaway made it much more simple, IMO. -
Personally, I would carry a 3 wood for those par 4 420 yds with a hard dog legs. Where I am, I like to have a club that can get 250 and still be able to control it a little better than my driver. My driver I just hit straight (that's the plan anyways). My 3 wood I can shape which ever way I want. Then again, you have a strong hybrid at 17*. My hybrid is 21*, so having my 3 wood there at 15* helps. I don't think you need to add anything.
-
This is the best advice IMO. Since I started doing this a few months ago, my score has dropped 5 strokes due to me not putting pressure on my self to save par or whatever it is. If I am playing with someone, I let them keep score as just tell them what I made hole by hole (bogey, par, bogey, double, par, par, bogey, etc.). I don't count each stroke as I play the hole, and I don't look at the scorecard until I'm done. This really has helped me.

It really does depend on your swing speed and much more. If you are 60 years old, I can assume your swing speed isn't too high, but not too low since you are already using regular shafts. I'm also assuming you were fit to those regular flex shafts? When I first started playing golf, my swing speed was 87 and played all graphite regular shafts in a set of older Wilson's. I had a stiff flex driver that someone gave me for a short period of time (Cobra S9-1). Simply put, I couldn't hit it. The launch angle was super low and the distance was 25 yds less than I could have gotten at the time, making my drives around only 200 yds. I could control the ball better, however. 4 years and many lessons later, my swing speed is avg 107 and I use stiff flex. I had since gotten a regular flex G10 driver and it began to feel very "whippy" and I could no longer seem to control it. Got fit for my driver now, and I love it. Matter of fact, played Sunday morning before the Mother's Day festivities and hit 6/7 fairways. 4/7 of which were +275. Best day of driving I have ever had. It's more of what works for you and what you prefer. If you don't mind a less than "ideal" launch angle and 25 yds less, stiffen the shaft. I, however, wanted what was "right" for me. I would not recommend softening the flex. You will loose consistency and control. I have played 9 holes with a "Soft Regular" driver and my accuracy went way down, but the yardage went up if and when I got a hold of it "properly" (which didn't happen more than 2 times)

I went in to Golfsmith to get new grips for my irons today and saw Callaway's new golf ball lineup. In 2013, Callaway had what seemed like 10 different options. -Hex Chrome+ -Hex Chrome -Hex Black -Hex Diablo -Hex Hot Pro -Hex Hot -Hex Warbird Because of the different names, I wasn't sure what was right for me. I spent more time wondering which ball did what rather than buying. Now Callaway have come out with 3 balls made for anyone -SR-1 105 swing speed Wow. That is smart marketing. Much easier on the consumer, and no more wondering what is right for my swing speed. Tour quality ball for any player made that easy.
-
This is also what I find kills me. If I could put a solid round together, I would shoot in the 80's. My front 9 is always bad (48-51) and my back 9 is always good (41-44). My lowest score is a 92 (49/43). I am itching to get in the 80's!!!

That guy specifically has said nothing to me positively on this thread or any others. He speaks the same way to others. Go read his other posts and you will see what I'm talking about. I don't care how knowledgeable someone is on golf. If you are going to talk to people the way he does (not above, but in other posts), I don't want your advice. "I got the job done": A video was taken to see my tempo and overall stroke as a whole. I didn't realize it needed to be super high quality. I will try to re-load the videos in a different way to get a higher quality out of them. The kid that was taking the videos was sitting in a chair for the face on angle. Behind, he was standing. Sorry my photography skills weren't up to par today. I did provide still shots as well.
-
You certainly like to complain. I got the job done. Is it professional quality? No. I never asked for your help to upload videos. You felt the need to get onto My Swing and gripe at me. Thanks, I haven't seen that although I did the angles just as it says. I made sure you can see the club, feet, body positioning, ball, etc. I got the job done and even added still shots on the certain points I wanted to emphasis.
-
Thanks, Greg. I haven't checked that out, however I did exactly what it said besides using a camera. I took a face on angle perpendicular to my set up, then had the kid stand directly behind me. The issues began when I uploaded the videos to YouTube. You can see the swing; the purpose was achieved. I even added still shots for emphasis on certain positions.
-
Bad angles? It's directly behind me and directly in front of me, but alright whatever you say. The videos them self look fine on my phone. The quality plummeted when I uploaded the videos to YouTube.

I have a driver swing speed of 107 avg. All I know, is my distance actually increased when going to a stiff shaft. Not only did my distance get an additional 5-10 yds, but the trajectory is much more favorable and I stick more greens. I also have way way less side spin on my shots resulting in straighter ball flight. I was fit for every club in my bag. When I was using the regular flex, my side spin was pretty high on certain shots and my launch angle was higher. I didn't care for that. I want more control. Not to mention, the club felt very "whippy" in my hand. I didn't care for that feel.

@Spyder just thought I would ruin your day. Josh Gordon is reportedly facing a season-long suspension after failing another drug test http://abcnews.go.com/Sports/josh-gordon-faces-suspension/story?id=23663197 Now who has the better WR core? hahaha! Stupid stupid Josh Gordon.

Right, but some people like to troll pages and say dumb stuff. That was really what I was targeting at. But yes, be honest.
-
I don't know. It was whatever Golfsmith uses. I've also hit on Dick's Sporting Goods monitor as well as my private coach who is a certified Titleist fitter, if that means anything... Right, but I don't include that when I factor in averages. When someone asks me what I usually hit with my 8 iron, my answer is a comfortable 150, hard 160 (I usually just say 150). I don't factor in the fact that I can and do sometimes mishit the club thus going 130 with a draw. Either way, it doesn't really matter at the end of the day. I answered the question accurately given I hit a "normal" shot. Again, I think all of this is perception. Some people count putting off the fringe a putt, I don't. You're not on the green. Some people count hitting the fringe a GIR, I don't. It's only a GIR if you hit and stay on the green. So do as you will

Alright. So I went to the range a day late because of the rain, but got some good work in. Now, before we start this, I would like to get this out. I am realizing that my swing has far more flaws in it than I thought it did. Worst part is, I don't know how to fix it. Worst part of fixing it becomes time and changing my swing to a point where I begin to do more damage than good. Without further ado, here are the pics and videos from the day. I hit the 6 iron again, but this time focused on playing it in the proper position. To no surprise, @iacas was correct in that if I move it up, I won't be able to make proper contact due to my flip. So I then start to focus on "trailing" those wrists as @saevel25 and I discussed above. After trying about 75 balls, I just couldn't get it to work. I began to play it directly out of the middle of my stance, and I was no longer hitting it thin and the ball flight and trajectory was "ideal" to my naked eye. As you can see in the 3rd picture, that flip really is more visible that I put the ball in the front of my stance. I noticed I was finding it much more difficult to cover the ball than I thought it would be. I also noticed the longer the club I went to, the less flip was present. Here is a still shot with my driver. I was asked to take some videos to see my tempo. Here they are: This first one was the 6 iron. Because I moved the ball toward the front-middle of the stance, I had a hard time making perfect contact, thus pushing the ball a little to my left. The push was also a consequence of a failed attempt of "trailing" my wrists. This is the driver down the line. This was a pretty solid shot. No complaints here: This is the driver face on. The first ball was a mishit and incorrect grip (too strong), and I wasn't satisfied, so I took a second. The second ball was a beautiful hit. I know this will come up, so I'm going to say it now. My right knee (forward knee) does a little "shimmee" there like a baseball player. 16 years of baseball to thank for that. Not only is it my baseball habit, but I had an ACL surgery on that knee, so I get really "afraid" of the rotation on that knee. I have tried everything under the sun to stop that. It's comfortable and really feel "rigid" when I consciously try to keep it still. I realize my swing has many flaws. I appreciate all comments and help, but be nice... Thanks fellas. P.S. Sorry for the super low quality videos. I took them from my iPhone 5s

On the monitor when I was being fit, barring a terrible mishit which did happen about 1/10 shots or so, I averaged 250 carry I think it was around 266 total distance avg. If the typical amateur weekend golfer averaged in their 30 yard worm burners, their average would drop to about a 180 if that hahaha. Do as you will.
