  1. The three pack they sell here in hawaii comes with two leather and one "Tour Technical Performance". If I remember correctly, its definitely more than 17, but less than 20 bucks. Either way, its still a great deal. My problem is that its hard to find size small, but when I do find them I usually buy two packs of three.
  2. I have bought twice from cpo and the service and quality have been excellent. I actually made a third purchase yesterday and my order was shipped out within an hour and a half of completing my order. The only problem I had was in all three instances, the sales guy said I will give you free shipping. I goated them into it saying "are you sure, are you sure" and each time they said "yes free shipping". Then I tell them I live in hawaii, and they say, "oh, i cant do that." Long story short they give me 2-3 day shipping for like 11 bucks, which is awesome. In the first two instances, I received my club(s) in 3 days. I am hoping my third order follows the same pattern.
  3. First off I think this is a great topic. I dont specifically think that the iphone will kill the GPS market, but more of the ubiquity of GPS chips equipped in mobile phones that will cut into the golf gps market. Absolute Zero defines both advantages and disadvantages but with the advancement in technology, we will see solutions to these disadvantages sooner than later. Battery life is a great example. I remember my first cell phone back in the early nineties used nickel metal hydride batteries and had a talk time of like 60 minutes and a standby time of 8 hours. Our modern phones use lithium ion and have 5 hour talk times with 5 day standbys. In all fairness, i do have a first generation iphone, which means it does not have a GPS unit built in. However, three of my coworkers have cell phones with GPS units and instead of buying a gps golf device, one decided to just write one from scratch. Between the four of us, we have combined over 40 years of IT experience spanning software development, Info Sec and networking. Just as the OP hinted "what if some guy in his basement develops a killer app that does this and uses free google maps. Talk about LITTLE to NO barrier to entry." Well that's exactly whats been going on for the past six months. Its definitely taking longer than projected to complete the application and has gone through several versions already. There is no doubt in my mind that there are hundreds of people coding their own home brew applications, which i believe will ultimately take a big bite out of the golf gps market. If anyone currently has a phone with a GPS chip and would like to test the software, I might be able to provide a link once things start to get out of beta. And yes, there will be an Iphone version.
  4. I used to keep everyhting and then things just started piling up. I now try and get rid of everything I dont think I am going end up playing and figure if I miss it that bad I could always get one on ebay. The only thing that I make a point to keep are putters that I have grown fond of. Everything else gets sold/bartered or given away.
  5. As a fellow high handicapper I take a different perspective. I can spend 15 bucks on brand new box of warbirds or something like that or I can buy some used pro-v1's on ebay or craigslist for less than a buck each. I get the warm and fuzzy feeling of playing a good ball and dont feel bad if it ends up in the drink. I actually feel better because its not a brand new ball! I wont say I get the full benefits of playing a "better ball" because I probably cant take advantage of the technology but I still get the satisfaction of practicing with a ball that I hope will one day help me improve my game.
  6. I started with the stock pitch (46 degrees) that came with my first set (x-18's) but ended up putting it in the closet and got a cg-14 48 and 56. As I started to play more I realized i had a big hole between the 48 and 56 so I filled with a 52 gap and eventually added the 60 lob. Once I started to realize my numbers, I end up having my 48 bent down to 46. I have only been playing about 10 months, and have a hard time hitting my mid to long irons, but my wedges are my clubs that I truly trust!
  7. I second the tylenol and advil! I also keep a few loose band aids as well as a can of bug spray depending on where I play.
  8. I tried the squareway 3 wood for about two weeks which took me through 3 rounds and many buckets at the range. Maybe cause I am just a shankapotamus, but I just could not hit that club straight. Everything hooked hard left and I couldnt get it to go straight off the deck or on a tee.
  9. I can definatley vouch for both the ft-i and ft-iq. I have owned both and once you get used to (or over) the square face and how closed they look at address, the sooner you'll start hitting it straighter. By far I am not a heavy hitter, but very recently started learning to hit my iq better and started getting a lot more distance over my ft-i.
  10. I have a lot of friends that use freecaddie. From what I've read, I think it uses the same codebase as skycaddie but for the regular version (not pro) everything is free. The free version basically gives you all the other bells and whistles. For the most part, my friends seem to be very happy with the standard version. Hope this helps..
  11. I am such a sucker for training aids. I have the following (notice have not necesarily use): 1. medicus dual hinge 5 iron 2. Swingyde 3. Power-Blade 4. Check-Go Pro ball marker I even sometimes put my swingyde on my medicus....
  12. If you are on Oahu I would suggest... Ewa Villages if you want to play a muni. I think for non residents its like $50.00 a round. Its a par 73 with 5 par 5's. Its the newest of all the muni's on this island and probably is in the best condition out of all of them. If you are military or know someone who is, I would highly suggest Navy Marine Golf Course. Of the Semi Privates, Ewa Beach Golf Club is a must. Until the opening of the Ernie Els designed course earlier this month, I believe Ewa Beach Golf Club was the newest course on the island. A second semi private I would suggest is Luana Hills. Talk about playing jungle golf! The greens are small, hard, and fast. They say to bring as many balls as your handicap cause they will surely get lost! If you over shoot the green, off into the jungle they go never to return. Imagine playing golf in jurrasic park. They have a signature par 3 hole known as "the pond" which is a relatively short hole but has the likes of a tpc sawgrass 17th hole. If you got the cash flow for the resort courses, you got to play turtle bay (two courses there) or Ko olina. Finish it off with a challenging public course at Ko'olau. Just my two cents... Feel free to PM when you get to islands if you get lost or need some assistance!
  13. I use the stock for my driver and hybrids. I bought the cool clear/transparent head covers for my irons/wedges so I can see what I am grabbing out of my bag. They also help when you play multiple wedges cause the head cover sets you buy usually only have a pitch and sand, but no wedge or gap. I would love to get a cool head cover for my ft-iq but i cant seem to find anyone that makes any head covers that fit square head drivers. I might have to sew a sock onto a toaster cozy and call it day. :)
  14. I got the FT-IQ tour 9.5 and I am still learning to try and hit it correctly. I previosly played with a ping g5 and then onto the ft-i. I am not a big hitter, but have liked the results from the IQ (I did gain about 10 yards of carry). I have found it very difficult to get over how closed the face is, my ft-i was not a tour model and it seemed more open than my IQ. Also, the head is a lot more elongated from face to tail, so I have issues with letting the club sit on the ground at setup, which cause the face to be even more closed at address. Overall, I have found myself trying to adjust my grip/stance in an effort to prevent it flying off to the left. I wouldnt call it so much of a hook, cause its flight path is actually perfectly straight but its not going straight down the fairway. For some reason, widening my stance a few inches more than I did with my FT-I has seemed to help me fire this thing straigher...
  15. Thanks for the clarification everyone! After hitting my first ball, I wasnt quite sure if it was OB or even if it could be found. I declared I was going to play a provisional and let everyone in the group rotate through tee shots before hitting my provisional. I was pretty sure I was in the right, but there was someone in the group who doesnt normally play golf that seemingly wanted my stroke count to be higher! Thanks again!
  16. So my buddies and I were playing today and I hit a ball that looked like it went OB. I hit another off the tee although I thought it was still in play. The second ball didnt go as far off the tee as the first one, so I ended up hitting it and it landing on the green. As we drove up to the green, i found the first ball that was believed to be OB. At that point in time I thought I could play my original ball and was happy to find my second hand Pro-V1 1 . I pitched it onto the green and scooped up my provisional ball. Was I supposed to continue playing the provisional? Thanks.
  17. Been playing 9 months now and just started being able to keep it under 100. Cant seem to break 97 just yet, but if I can have one good day without a snowman and few lost balls and I should be able to taste the high 80's.
  18. I've had the best luck buying them off of craigs list. Pick your geographic location and just start searching for golf balls. Theres always a kid that goes around and collects golf balls and sells them dirt cheap. I think I bought close to 200 Pro V1's (all kinds of conditions) for around a 100 bucks. The best thing is you can actually look at what you are buying before shelling out the dough. Even better, you can have the opportunity to bargain down. Its always worked for me! Good Luck!
  19. I have had no issues with my 3balls purchases. I bought a hybrid marked as "like new" and it was pretty much brand new when I got it. The only issue I had was it didnt come with a head cover. To their credit, it was not advertised with a head cover. If you are not in a big rush, you can also look at their ebay listings. They have a lot of "Best Offer" options. I saw a hybrid on their site for one price and then looked for the same hybrid on their Ebay site and offered a bit less. It took a day or so for them to respond, but I ended up saving another 10 bucks or so. Give it try!
  20. I think because I am such a high handicap that I cant really hit these clubs as good as i would like. I rarely hit the 3 wood even though I practice with it at the range all the time. When I analyze my game play, its my long/mid irons and woods that kill my game. I dumped the long irons (3 and 4)for TM hybrids and couldnt hit them to save my life. I switch out those out for TM 2008 models and still no luck. I was beginning to think that I was not just a hybrid person. Then I hit a cally ft hybrid and my game got a bit better. Because I am not a strong hitter (carry my driver about 210) I decided to replace my long irons with cally ft hybrids and added a wedges so I could focus on distances that I could hit and control (under 100 yards). So here are my numbers (carry yardages): wedges 100 yards and in 9i 110 8i 120 7i 130 6i 140 5i 150 4h 160 3h 170 5 wood 185 Driver 210 My 5wood, although carries me about 200 yards is very inconsistent and gives me a duck hook that I cant shake. On par 5's I use it on my second shot and if the fairway is large enough I get away with Par. If not, it hooks into the abyss and I am looking at a snowman. So, I am thinking if I get a replacement 5 wood that helps get rid of my hook (I dont hook any of my other clubs, if anything I slice my longer irons) then I'll be able to start dropping my score. At any rate, if anyone has any suggestions, please feel free to let me have it! As a newbie, I am willing to listen.
  21. Aloha, I am in the market for a new 5 wood and looking for some opinions from those who have hit the callaway ft 2008 5 or 4 wood and the ft-i squareway 5 wood. Thanks in advance for your opinions.
  22. I dont consider myself a big hitter, I am only 5'5" and weigh 138 lbs. But I seem to average about 240 -250 on my drives, so I am pretty pleased with myself.
  23. I have been playing 8-9 months (started in april of this year) and once I realized I got bitten by the golf bug I set a goal to break a hundred before years end. The first time I broke a 100 was in September, I got a 97 but it was on a par 71. All my friends said congrats but we have to put an asterisk because it was a par 71. So for the past three months I have been playing only par 72's or better and recently scored another 97 last week at Olomana golf course amidst all the Obama fanfare. He was playing a few holes behind my group and with all the buzz in the air (not to mention the secret service agents) I was able to pull it off. So after 9 months of play, 97 is my magic number. The goal for 2009 is to stay in the 90's but at least taste the 80's!
  24. Santa left me under the tree an FT-IQ 9.5 Tour. :)
  25. Hi everyone, So I am in the market for new irons and everyone tells me I should get my lie angle changed to two degrees flat. I am 5'5 and have previously used a standard set off the rack. Now that I feel I have committed to playing golf, I want to get a better set. So here's my question: Being 5'5, would it help my game to play a flatter lie angle on my irons? Anyone else out there in the same height group as me and found playing a flatter iron help with improving the game. Thanks
